.ottom of a vessel or in an instrument line to drain or reduce concentration levels. Differential pressure transmitter: >evice which measures the difference in pressure .etween any two points of a system or a component. Equalizer: >evice which allows pressure to equali%e from one side of the manifold to the other. Manifold: 7 conductor which provides multiple connection ports.

!he intricate systems that are now in use emphasi%e compactness2 therefore, many manifolds are used, especially on hydraulic and pneumatic and instrumentation systems. 3t is often desira.le to mount all the valves on a manifold panel.
7s shown in 'igure 1, large num.ers of connecting lines can .e located in drilled or fa.ricated manifold plates. !hese plates and valves not only eliminate many fittings and potential lea+s .ut also ensure a minimum num.er of errors in plum.ing. 7lthough manifolds are relatively eApensive, they greatly reduce assem.ly time in connecting up a system. !he manifold may .e drilled, cored and cast, .olted"on, or .ra%ed"plate construction.

(ingle"valve manifolds are used in simple systems where it is necessary to provide a positive shut"off of flow and to throttle flow during operation. !hey also provide for two instrument connections and a test connection. 7ny or all of these connections may .e .loc+ed according to desired use. 'igure 2 shows a simplified cutaway view of a single"valve manifold along with its schematic diagram.

!wo"valve manifolds are used as a .arrier .etween line pressure and instrumentation equipment. !he second valve and line serves the dual purpose of providing a vent connection to prevent line pressure from .eing loc+ed in the instrumentation and could also serve as a cali.ration connection. 'igure 3 shows a simplified cutaway view of a two"valve manifold along with its schematic diagram.
!he three"valve equali%ing manifold is most commonly used in con4unction with a differential pressure transmitter. 3t consists of two .loc+ valves and one equali%ing valve. $ach side of the equali%ing valve .ody usually has .een ported and plugged for either vents or test connections. #alve manifolds have .een widely used in the fa.rication of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. !hree valve and five valve manifolds are used for installation of differential pressure cells. !wo valve manifolds provide connections for indicating devices such as gages. some advantages of these components include2 ease of assem.ly, compactness, and good maintaina.ility. !he use of manifolds will save time and minimi%e the possi.ility of rewor+. !his module has provided the necessary information to ensure that a technician thoroughly understands the construction and proper installation of a variety of valve manifolds.
