COMMITTEE OPERATIONS
The club was once again fortunate to have a stable and experienced committee to guide
the club through the season. At the 2008 AGM, Vaughan McEwen and Nicole Sullivan
resigned and Nick Grice and Grace Grocott were elected for the first time. Our sincerest
thanks to Vaughan and Nicole for their services over the last few years. Grace’s election
continued the remarkable and long-standing association the Grocott family has had with the
club – Grace is the fourth generation Grocott to be on the committee. Long may it continue!

Anna Wilkins resigned from the committee at the end of March.

At the first meeting of the season Peter Dow was elected Chairperson of the committee.

Four subcommittees operated throughout the season. Their responsibilities are given
below, with convenors as noted:

Activities Subcommittee (social and cricket events, publicity and promotion;

communications: convenor – Ryan Burson)

Business Subcommittee (finance, sponsorship & fund raising, subscriptions,

planning & club management, membership, club records, liaison with SSCL board:
convenor - Peter Dow)

Cricket Subcommittee (training & coaching, player recruitment, team entries,

grounds & practice facilities, gear, school liaison, awards, disciplinary; convenor –
Steve Daly)

Junior Subcommittee (managing the operations of the Junior cricket section;

convenor –Henk Stoffers)

The number of committee meetings held this year was well down on past years. This
possibly reflected either the experience of the committee members who, via their
subcommittee membership and meetings simply got on with the tasks assigned, or maybe it
was the lack of major issues arising this season, or maybe even the efficiencies of email
and modern communications which meant that many discussions and decisions could be
made via ‘virtual’ committee. (Or maybe – negatively – meeting fatigue?). Whatever the
reason, the fewer formal meetings did not appear to hinder matters, and the management
of the club went reasonably smoothly.

One other contributing factor would certainly be that the committee can now largely focus
on cricket matters, as the pavilion operating and maintenance issues – once a major call on
committee time – are now in the capable hands of Shirley Sports Club Ltd.

During the year, until the printing deadline for this report, five meetings were held and
attendance is recorded below (with apologies tendered recorded in parentheses). CJCA
meetings, representative and club practices, travel and work commitments affected the
attendance record of a number of committee members.

PRESIDENTS REPORT

The 2008-2009 season has been another good season for our Club.

In many ways it was also a season of transition following the sudden passing of Bill Duncan
before the season started. It is very pleasing to note that everyone stepped up to fill the
gaps left by Bill. He was a wonderful coach, mentor and cricket enthusiast and it is
important the passion and commitment he generated is maintained. I believe this is
reflected in good club performances at all levels. Well done everyone. We have a great
club spirit. My congratulations to you all. It is a new era and as a club we must continue to
strive for the best and keep progressing. Bill would have wanted that.

As usual, we have again won several trophies in the CCA competitions and these are listed
elsewhere in the report. Congratulations to the teams and individuals who have received
these awards. In particular, Women’s Premier had an outstanding season with only one
loss and fully deserved their awards. First Grade women and 2A Men were other grade
winners and these were also outstanding achievements. Sadly, Presidents Gold lost some
form and were unable to retain the trophy they have held for the last six seasons. This
made some of the other teams happier but hopefully they will be back on top again next
season. Our other teams also competed well and many of you will have achieved personal
milestones and targets. The significant ones are recorded elsewhere in the report and were
acknowledged at our prize giving in April. Our Third Grade women’s team deserve a special
mention. They were undermanned all season but kept trying and showed a wonderful
spirit. These girls have talent but we need a few more players to achieve good results

There have been several notable individual highlights. The selection of Kate Pulford and
Sara McGlashan for the White Ferns and World Cup team is the main one. They got to the
final of the World Cup at Lords but were beaten by England. Both performed well. I was
lucky to see the highlights of the final during a recent trip to UK. I hope you had the same
pleasure. Michael Papps also showed his class for Canterbury and now holds the record
for the highest number of centuries scored for Canterbury. When you think of all the great
players who have played for Canterbury, this is a remarkable achievement and I am sure
there are more to come. Congratulations to these players, and also to all other club
members who made representative teams this season, including those players in our Junior
ranks.

Our Junior program continued under the guidance of Henk Stoffers. It was difficult picking
up the pieces after Bill’s departure but this was successfully achieved with the able support
of a hastily arranged Junior Committee, coaches and team managers. Our thanks to Henk,
the committee and all those who helped during the season. Also congratulations to all
those who were selected for Canterbury Junior Rep teams. Our Junior award function at
the end of the season was in a new format and was a great success. There was a good
attendance on a warm day and a fine array of junior talent on display.
ECSCC Annual Report 2008/2009 Page 6

Our senior award function was also a success and a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge
Club performances for the season. Warm congratulations to all who received awards and
trophies. It was a particular pleasure to award the President’s trophy to Anna Wilkins for
her outstanding contribution to the club both on and off the field during the season. She
had a major impact on the development of women’s cricket in our club and was also
involved at Canterbury level. Her return to Northern Districts is a huge loss but we wish
her well in the future.

Finally, thanks to all who have helped in the success of our club during the season. Our
management committee led by Peter Dow, Junior committee led by Henk Stoffers, our
coaching team led by Neville Lyons, our team managers and our ground staff led by Dave
Searle. On the social side, Steve and Jenny Saunders for catering, Dot Wright for the bar
and others including Kathy Pawson and Heather Papps for their assistance and support at
Burwood when necessary. Everyone has played a valuable part in the life of our club.
Long may it continue.

Once again we look forward to the coming season. It will be another opportunity to add to
individual and club performances, establish new records, contribute to the life of our club
and enjoy the wonderful game of cricket. I look forward to enjoying your company and wish
you all the best for the season ahead.

COACHING AND SELECTION

Men’s Grades

Selectors:
Seniors / Second Grade (S. Pawson, N. Grice and N. Lyons.)
Budgies (N. Lyons and N. Bates)

The selection panel started the new season with the sad loss of Bill Duncan. Bill had played
a major role on the selection panel, covering the lower grades for many seasons. The
players and members of the East Christchurch Shirley Cricket Club were his second family,
and he was sadly missed by us all. Scott and I called on a well respected player/captain,
Nick Bates, to take over the task of selecting the lower grade teams, with the brief that we
wanted to develop the skill base of all players. The aim was to lift their performance and to
prepare them for consideration for our senior squad, led by Scott Pawson and the club
coach.

At the start of the season, we decided to help out the CCA by entering two teams in the 2B
competition, thereby eliminating a bye each week. However, this placed the selectors under
a lot of pressure, as we struggled to fill full teams each week, and ultimately had to
withdraw the 2B Gold side. We hope to avoid this issue this year.

Some playing highlights this season were the excellent late performances by the senior
team, and 2A Grade winning the one-day title and being runner up in the two-dayers, with
that competition going down to the last day. The 2C budgies were in with a chance in both
the competitions but weather played a big part in the required outcomes.

We ended up using 37 players in the senior squad, with 19 having played in the senior
team and 29 in the 2A Grade team, some of these appearing in both teams. This was not
an ideal situation, but all players used made a good contribution. One major disappointment
was the low number of high scores by these players - only six centuries and thirty-nine 50s
- which showed up deficiencies in terms of mental application.

The depth of the club was light this year in terms of player experience across the board,
and this was exposed when our top players were selected for Canterbury teams and/or
carrying injuries. However, the recruitment of some very good younger players from SBHS
during late December should help to rectify this next season.

Senior Squad
The season started off in early July with fitness testing and training at Profitness, under the
watchful eye of Steve Barry the club fitness trainer. However, with most of the experienced
senior players either overseas developing their game - which is fantastic - or training with
Canterbury/New Zealand outdoor and indoor squads, we could not get the senior team
together until the week before we played the first game. This impacted on the dynamics of
the side.

The senior team struggled in some areas when our top players M Papps, B Hiini, R Burson
and D Broom were away on representative duties or carrying injuries. The younger players
ECSCC Annual Report 2008/2009 Page 11
_________________________________________________________________________

coming through have taken a little longer to get to the next level but I firmly believe that this
year we should achieve better outcomes with the experience gained from last season.

The second grade team produced some great results, winning the one-day competition
against an outstanding St Albans team, and just losing the two-dayers late in the last day of
the season. Both the Senior and 2A teams played the last two-day game of the season
against Lancaster Park at their home ground, with East’s absolutely dominating and
winning outright both games by early afternoon. This was a fantastic performance by all
players of our senior squad and it was great to be an East Shirley member.

The Senior team made the semi-finals of the one-dayers and with very good wins later in
the season, when all players were performing closer to their potential, we ended up
finishing in the top four. This was satisfactory, and some reward for the months of hard
work put in by all the players. However, Scott and I have set high standards for this squad
and team, and expect to see a lift in performance in the coming season. The winning of the
Hadlee Trophy (again!) reflects the high on and off-field standards set by this team and is a
tribute to the captain and players - well done boys.

I am looking forward to the challenge this year, to developing the huge potential of talent
that we have and getting East Shirley back on top.

2A Grade
The 2A Grade boys had another incredible season, winning the one-day trophy and being
runner up in the two-dayers. I thought the one-day final was a highlight, with all players
performing well, especially as they had to defend such a low total. The young players in
this team will be our future senior players, but to get to that level they will still need to work
hard and learn from the experienced players in the squad - which means you will need
ears!

A couple of the individual highlights included the development of Jared Robert’s bowling,
winning the club trophy for most club wickets, and DJ’s 202* on Burwood oval. Also
noteworthy was the retirement of Willie Dennett at season’s end – Willie has been a huge
wicket taker for many years and will be missed.

The team was again led by Nick Grice who is developing well as a leader, but better
performances are still needed from the older players to help him achieve the team
outcomes. To perform at the next level requires greater consistency, and I would have to
say that this is still work in progress. It will be up to each individual to challenge himself and
set more demanding personal goals if the next step is to be reached.

2C Budgies & 2B Grades

A disappointing result by the Budgies team as I thought they had a lot of talent. In their
defence, they again had to use many players to fill their team each week due to injuries and
CCA representative duties in the higher grades, and this impacted on the team’s
performances. Nevertheless, there were many highlights with C Grey scoring a total of 619
runs and centuries from K Smith and R Rhodes. I Evans, eight wickets for 60, was the
bowling performance of the season for this grade.
ECSCC Annual Report 2008/2009 Page 12
_________________________________________________________________________

Nick Bates led this team and set the standards required. The squad was a pleasure to
coach on Mondays and Wednesdays, with some players from the senior squad turning up
as well to fine tune there skills, which gave the sessions an edge.

The 2B Blue team (afternoon cricket), led by A Howison, were a talented group of players.
They were all mates having played cricket at school and enjoyed training and playing the
game. They trained with the Budgies and this gave us a good squad in which to develop
their skills. Three or four of these players have the ability to play at a higher grade but it will
need a greater commitment on their part if they are to reach that next level.

Women’s Grades

Premier
The women’s squad has been developing well over the last few years under the coaching
team of Garfield Charles and Tracey O’Neill, and the leadership of Anna Wilkins. There
was fantastic depth and experience in this team, with the women’s senior squad producing
two New Zealand players and four or five first class players. It was pleasing to see several
promising younger players coming through the ranks.

There was a vast improvement on last year’s performances, with some special highlights
being: winning the one-day trophy and Twenty20 competition; Sara McGlashan and Kate
Pulford being selected for the NZ White Ferns; Anna Wilkins CCA Premier Grade “batter of
the year” with 672 runs; and Tracey O’Neill CCA Premier Grade “bowler of the year” with 23
wickets.

Congratulations to Anna and her team who had an awesome season. I thought the
dynamics of the team and culture were the keys to this year’s triumphs. Well done girlsies!

First Grade & Third Grade

First Grade was again well led by Megan Harkerss this season and was a very competitive
unit. Unfortunately, they lost players to the Premier team when they were short, making it
difficult at times to perform as a unit. The side was coached during the week as part of the
premier squad by Garfield and Tracey. My thanks to Tracey for coaching these lower grade
teams, with full player turn outs at practices, and for the extra coaching time for the girls
who were selected for the CCA representative sides. We will all miss Tracey when she
leaves for her OE later this year but wish her all the best.

As I said last year, outstanding progress has been achieved by this group of young
cricketers who keep developing at a great rate and I look forward to their future further
development. One or two players were selected for the Premier women’s team this year
and performed well.

Coaching Coaches:
During the season we held a number of Coaching Coaches courses but the view is we
need to do more. For 2009 we have set up a number of coaching workshops to which all
present or budding coaches are invited. We will be in touch but until then you can see the
details on the new website and check the coaching program dates. This season I was
delighted when some coaches asked me to work with their team on some nights, and to
give them some ideas on coaching during the week. This year the website will have a

Coaching Section showing basics skills etc for you to try and suggestions that might help
develop your own ideas.

Last Word
For many seasons, the Club, under the guidance of Bill Duncan, has been developing many
young players, a number of whom have started their careers in Bill’s beloved Junior Section
and moved through to the club senior squad, with some progressing further to Canterbury
and New Zealand representative honours. In early 2008, Howard Morel presented to Bill
and me the idea of ECSCC developing a cricket academy. After a couple of meetings we
were asked to write up a structured program for it, as we thought it would be a fantastic
opportunity for the club to develop young players whom we thought could play at a senior
cricket level and beyond. Sadly, the idea was put on hold with the passing of Bill. In early
April, Howard, Scott, Garfield and I had a meeting to resurrect the proposal and, over
winter, have written-up a structure for the proposal. This will soon be presented to our
committee to consider.(Watch this space.)

The 2008/2009 season was another great year, led by the women’s Premier and men’s 2A
Grade teams and with a number of individuals collecting trophies at the Canterbury Cricket
Association 2008/09 awards. I thank the players, adults and children, coaching staff, club
management and our loyal group of family supporters. We are all part of this awesome
family, at the home of cricket. Special thanks on behalf of the club and senior team to Terry
Papps who has decided to hang up his pencils and retire from many years of scoring; he
will be missed as he was a big contributor and member of our successful senior team.

PREMIER GRADE
I would just like to make a special mention about the passing of Bill Duncan. Bill will be
sadly missed by all members of the club. He played a huge part in the cricket careers of all
players in the senior squad and will never be forgotten. Rest in peace Bill.

If you classed your year as a success by winning silverware, then the 2008/09 season
would be classed as a disappointment. We didn’t start the season well and by the time
Xmas came around we were sitting in sixth position, a long way back from the leaders St
Albans. We had trouble scoring runs and, on top of that, we didn’t bowl a team out until
March, which was a big worry. To win anything you have to take twenty wickets in a match
and, at times, we didn’t look like it. I think the harder we tried, the worse it got.

In the one day competition we made the semi-finals but got rolled in this match by a full
strength HSOB attack – however, it was more our own undoing then the bowling of HSOB.
When we realised that winning the two day comp. was out of our reach we started to play
some very good cricket. Our last two games against Riccarton and LPW were won very
easily. A big highlight for the troops was having Indian one-day and Twenty20 star Pragyan
Ojha play the first day against Riccarton. It was great for the guys to be alongside a player
of Ojha’s talent in the East Shirley colours.

Well done to the players who represented Canterbury Wizards (Mike Papps, Brandon Hiini,
Ryan Burson and Darren Broom) and also Canterbury A (Darren Broom, Mike Vermuelen).
A big thank you to Terry Papps who, at the end of the season, decided to finally hang up
the pen and retire. You have done an outstanding job and all the team appreciates the job
that you do. I look forward to seeing you down watching the troops in the seasons to follow.
To Steve Cooke our Manager, thank you once again for the job that you do.

And Nev, thanks for the season. Not only for all the time you spend coaching the Premier
team and all the other grades as well, but also the endless phone calls you have to make to
get teams on the park.

Also thanks to our wife’s, partners and families for the support you give us to play the
game.

Lastly, ten of the troops had an end of year trip to the Gold Coast which was a great way to
end the season. The boys really did enjoy themselves. We really had to “ Ping it back so
it Grizzals a few times but we managed to get through it all.

I hope everyone enjoys the rest of the winter and I’ll see you all back at the home of cricket
next summer.

2A GRADE
This year it was going to need a big effort from the lads to repeat
last season’s effort.

We didn’t get off to a good start. It was a repeat of last season’s

one-day final against St Albans, as they chased down our 247,
getting there on the second to last ball. The second game was a
walk over. A tidy victory over Sydenham, beating them by 206
runs, thanks to a century from Shane McConnell and Peter Dibb
with 77. Willie knocked 5 of them over and they rolled for 98.

The next game was against Marist-Harewood. They lived up to

their usual standards and we beat them outright. Youngy bowled very well taking 8 wickets
for the match. Sydenham were next and, while they put up more of a fight than Marist, we
still went into the second innings needing only 11 to win. Youngy again dominated all
innings, taking 9 wickets for the match and a 51 not out.

This season, Twenty20’s were introduced and our first game was against our arch-rivals
St Albans. They set us a reasonable total of 153 but we made it four down with two overs to
spare. As Nick Johnston said, on his way to 92 not out, “This is piss.” He used the sweep-
shot to his full advantage.

The game against St Albans would become the deciding factor in who won the two-day
trophy. It was a pretty evenly fought contest on a flat deck at Burwood 1. They took first
innings by 33 runs, and those four points would, in the end, be crucial for St Albans. We
battled hard on the second day for a draw.

The game against Burnside on Burwood 2 was a game we should have won comfortably.
We didn’t bat well, only making 187 on the shortest boundaries in Christchurch. A brilliant
turn around with the ball showed our true character as we fought back to win the game. We
bowled them out at the death when they only needed five to win.

Another game that went down to the last over was against LPW in the Twenty20 comp. We
set them 136. They needed four to win off the last ball and they got there. I thought it was a
good effort trying to defend such a small total and we almost did it. This loss had us
finishing second in the Twenty20 comp. The other game that day was a walk-over against
Marist-Harewood. We beat them by 8 wickets. J-bone made it look all too easy with a 66
not out.

After the Christmas break we were down on numbers with players required for rep cricket,
but an influx of school leavers from Shirley Boys bolstered the ranks. The four one-dayers
after Christmas were a chance for the young players to step up and earn their spot in
Second Grade. Jared Cookson did so, scoring 68 and 45 not out. Tim Johnston bowled
very well and it earned him a spot in Seniors. Jimmy Grice proved to be very handy down
the order and an opening bowler with a bit of fire in the belly. Other promising players are
Blake Grice and Dylan Goldstone. They will prove to be valuable players in the future.
At the end of January we had qualified top of the one-day and two-day tables, so things
were looking good for the double. Burnside made easy-beats in the next two-day game. We
then welcomed back D.J. Lyons and he slotted in nicely to the keeping/ opening bat role.
ECSCC Annual Report 2008/2009 Page 20
_________________________________________________________________________

He cemented our spot in the one-day semi-final at Burwood Park against Riccarton. He
took no prisoners, smashing his way to 80 not out and winning us the game. But he couldn’t
have done it without the help of Des and troy (Jed Roberts), taking five wickets off his 10
overs.

The next game was the one-day final against St Albans. It wasn’t a good start when I had a
memory lapse and forgot if we were batting or bowling. We were put in to bat and Saints
took a couple of early wickets and they continued falling regularly after that. We made 168
all out, thanks to a 56 from Youngy. They went into bat thinking that they had it in the bag -
but never right off East Shirley. They were cruising at 50 without loss but an inspired,
relentless fight back saw us win the game by 22 runs. We never gave up and it was an
awesome feeling to come through victorious. It was great that the girls won too and we
celebrated hard into Monday morning. Just quietly, I contemplated ringing the boss in the
morning, because I was rough.

To do the double we had to win both of the remaining two-dayers outright. It was going to
be a huge task to try and bowl out Riccarton twice on a very flat Burwood 1. The bowlers
hated it but the batters loved it. In one of the highlights of the season, DJ scored a superb
202 not out with 25 fours and 4 sixes. A fantastic knock that he will be telling his grand kids
about one day. It was a game with plenty of runs that ended in a draw.

In the last game of the season, we beat LPW by an innings. Shane McConnell made it two
centuries from two innings, scoring 101. It was also Willie Dennett’s last game for the club
as he was retiring. It was really good to send Willie off on a win because he has been the
go-to bowler for me for the last two seasons. He will be missed.

In the end, we finished second on the two-day table, 3.5 points behind Saints.

Well, it was another top season from my team and I'm looking forward to another one next
year. The 2A Grade double is very hard to win, but I’m hoping our hunger for it will get us
there next season.

2B GRADE BLUE

With a fairly young team, we didn’t have very high expectations going into the season. With
that said, we nevertheless got off to a good start with three wins in our first four games.
After those early successes, however, some of the lads were rewarded for their good
performances with selection in higher teams. This meant we had to rebuild a bit and we
often struggled to get the full XI on Saturdays.

During the season, a few of the lads stood up with some big contributions, namely an
unlucky Michael ‘Van’ Vanner (98) and Andrew ‘Howie’ Howison (100* and 5/16). Others
new to the game also punched above their weight. In their first seasons, Mike ‘Mikey’
Brown in a remarkable spell achieved figures of 4/12 and Robbie ‘Robbo’ Williamson’s
efforts in the field and down the order were also key to some big wins.

Work Horses Matthew ‘Goodey’ Goode (best figures of 4/21) and Chris ‘Betch’ Batchelor
(three half centuries) always brought their best. Inclusion half way through the season of
Chris ‘Morel’ Morel provided an extra option with the new ball. He also performed extremely
consistently with the bat down the order and even proved successful when asked to open
as well. Our overseas import, Josh ‘J.D.’ Davey, was consistent as ever at the top of the
order, acting as a rock on many occasions, achieving a best score of 88. He also provided
a handy option with his off spin, illustrating this in the last game with amazing figures of
5/16.

Overall our young team punched well above their weight this season and hopefully we can
develop this confidence and experience into more successes next season.

Notable Milestone

In early March 2009, when Michael Papps scored 127 for Canterbury against Central
Districts, he wrote his name in the record book as the player with the most first class
centuries for Canterbury. His thirteen centuries passed the record he previously shared with
Chris Harris.

March was a good month for Michael, as, by the end of the month, he had extended his
record to fifteen, with further centuries against N.D (128) and CD (127).

When you consider some of the great players who have appeared for Canterbury over the
years, this is a tremendous record.

Well done Mike!

2C GRADE BUDGIES
This season the Budgies were again playing in the 2C grade but with a couple of changes
from the previous season. The two suburban teams that played in the grade had moved up
to Senior suburban and there was also the introduction of a Twenty20 competition. The
Budgies were one of the better teams in the grade but unfortunately not the best. We had a
side that got into some difficult situations but would always put up a fight. And we had a lot
of laughs off the field as well.

In the two-day competition we finished second, with the highlight being a 10 wicket win over
Saint Albans who went on to win the competition. We got ourselves into a couple of tough
situations during the season and had to fight hard for the draw – but, as a result, we were
never beaten outright and this was a major positive to take away for the season.

We were the defending one-day champions and were looking to retain the cup but this did
not eventuate. A couple of losses straight after Christmas when a few players were missing
put us on the back foot and, although we fought hard to get back into contention, we lost a
couple of games through bad weather which meant we missed out on a place in the final.
We were left rueing those loses after Christmas. The highlight was beating the eventual
winners, Burnside-West, during the round-robin.

The Twenty20 competition was a bit of a farce with no one quite sure what was going on.
There was no final and we played some teams twice and some teams not at all. We only
lost one game and this was to the eventual winners Burnside-West. This form of the game
did not suit our side and we gained little enjoyment or benefit from it. While it may be great
for bringing in new fans, the traditional cricket players who play week–in, week-out prefer
the tried and tested.

There were some great performances throughout the season, the most notable from
Charlie Grey who scored 619 runs and topped our batting averages. In fact, this was the
most runs scored by any player at the club this season - a wonderful effort - and saw
Charlie being voted our players’ player-of-the-year. Karl Smith and Russell Rhodes both
scored hundreds and it was great to have Russell back at the club after a few seasons
away. Most of the batsman contributed runs at some stage of the season to support those
bigger scores. The bowling highlight had to be Iain Evans 8 for 60 in the final game of the
season. Kenny Higgenbottom, Blake Grice, Andrew Littlejohn and Karan Shevde also took
five-wicket bags.

As with last year, we went through a large number of players – but, with the large number of
representative players and the spate of injuries the club had this season, it can’t be helped.
Nevertheless, it was disappointing to lose players throughout the season for other reasons
and this meant that down the grades we quite often struggled for numbers. However, all in
all, it was another enjoyable season. Thanks to Nev for his help with all the coaching he
does and I hope to see everyone back next season.

3A GRADE (HOOTERS)
Much as we did last season, we started the 08/09 season by saying goodbye to another
long term part of the team – our uniform. Our much loved uniform had soaked up more
than its fair share of beer, blood, beer, sweat, tears, beer and other bodily fluids over the
years, and it will be truly missed.

Our season started with a game against Sumner at Helipad 1. We easily won the game by
113 runs despite only having a handful of full time players. The game will mostly be
remembered for the sideline performance of “drunken Russian guy”, unfortunately
overshadowing a fine 70 from Muz Seaton.

The next few games were played in pretty atrocious conditions that left many of us wishing
that Canterbury Cricket had just called the games off. Howling southerlies and single digit
temperatures left bowlers staring at their shoes when I asked who wanted to bowl into the
wind. Despite the weather we had good wins against Halswell, mostly thanks to another
fine knock of 89 not out from Muz, and Sydenham Suddenly, thanks to 95 not out from
man-of-the-moment Muz. In between we lost to Harewood, but we won’t dwell on that.
Gangor was heavily fined for his performance against Sydenham: not only did he pull up
lame after bowling two balls, but he also left his girlfriend at Sydenham Park after the game.

As the weather began to resemble something close to warm, we notched up our fourth, fifth
and sixth wins of the season. Against OBC, Dip scored 66 and Chook picked up the first
four wicket bag of the season. Against Hornby, Chook picked up another four wickets, and
against Sydenham Predators, Dip scored 71. The first seven balls Shane bowled against
the Predators cost 12 runs, but he had his revenge with the eighth ball. The batsmen
played an awful shot and was clean bowled - maybe he was put off by the girlish scream of
pain emitted by Shane as he released the ball, before crumpling into the ground in agony.
Who knows? Side strains are funny things… except when they happen to you. I should
know, I had one at the time too…. Maybe our lack of warming-up had something to do with
it. Anyway, the wins extended our season record to 6-1, probably our best start to a season
ever.

Then we lost our mojo.

We lost four of our next five games. Despite good individual performances from Chook,
Daz, Shane, Dip, Timmy and Muz we never put in a good team performance and our
season record dropped to 7-5.

Boat (five wickets) and Chook (four wickets) bowled us to an easy win against Sydenham
Suddenly, and this was followed by a good all round batting and bowling effort that secured
the double against a strong OBC side. But then we lost close games against Sydenhan
Predators and Merivale Pap, before finishing the season strongly with good wins against
Heathcote (Muz 93, Chook four wickets), Park (Muz 65, Chook and Gangor four wickets
each) and Sumner (Phil 32 not out).

The win against Park was especially satisfying as the loss cost them the season and wiped
the smug look off their captain’s face.
ECSCC Annual Report 2008/2009 Page 29
_________________________________________________________________________

All in all, it was a good season. We finished with a 12-7 record, Muz won the afternoon
grade batting trophy and Chook won both the afternoon grade bowling and all-rounders
trophies. In so doing, they set new Hooters’ records for most runs and most wickets in a
season. Well done Muz and Chook and well done to the whole team who, despite the odds
and a mid-season form slump, finished comfortably in the top half of the table, picked up a
few prize scalps and had a lot of good times along the way.

Finally, congratulations to Dipper and VJ on the birth of young Wyatt.

I hope you winter well and I’ll see you next season.

PRESIDENTS BLUE

We did something in 2008/09 that we’ve never done before - being joint competition
leaders! It lasted for one game, the first one, but nevertheless we did lead the competition!

Now that the performance issues are out of the way, the team records that were set can be
noted. These included fielding the most players (48, up eleven from last season), and
fielding the most father-son pairings (five, although no more than two pairings ever
appeared in one game). Plus, a father-daughter pairing in the form of the Nicholsons at
one stage when we were one short.

Our team revolved around a few players turning out regularly, supplemented by a large and
varied supporting cast. Some of the extras in the cast made fleeting appearances – half of
those turning out for us played just one game – and didn’t trouble the scorers too much,
while others made their presence felt, e.g. Andy Hearn’s two games netting two fifties. With
the loss of a couple of regular players from last season (including a pretty disappointing
defection), and many others not playing so regularly or even less often, our season was a
modest one in terms of on-the-field results. What we did manage to do on occasions was
to give some younger players in the club games to hopefully assist their progress. David
Hearn again captained the team, and is threatening to develop into the elder statesman of
the side.

Although just winning the one game – despite being close in a couple of other run chases –
there were some performances of note. Several players scored their first fifties for the team
(Colin Viegas, Rajeev Varma, Chris Lyons, and Nicky Cottam – all fine knocks). Others
picked up their first wickets when given the opportunity to bowl (such as Raymond
McLean), and John Kerrison had the pleasure of taking a rare hat-trick (along with the only
four wicket bag). Tony Gray was the outstanding bowler with an economy rate of a mere
2.2 runs per over, including just three runs off one eight over spell. Tony also recorded the
only batting average over twenty, and his presence coincided with the team being more
competitive.

Skipper David Hearn continued to bowl well, taking twelve wickets for less than twenty
apiece. Chris Lyons and Tony Blackler again gave their all at the bowling crease. Tony
also made a late charge for the all-rounders award, tragically being run out in the last game
and falling three short of a season aggregate of one hundred. Roger Parlane played one
game, memorably bowling Peter Kennedy with his first ball. Allan Rowland took several
wickets, including dismissing Warren Wisneski cheaply by most standards (i.e. for less than
one hundred).

Our solitary win was an important one, regaining the Holland Cup from Marist. Records
show that skipper David Hearn won the toss and chose to field first, with the team sporting
their new team strip for the first time. Nicky Cottam and Tony Gray opened the bowling,
getting some nice movement on a pitch that had acceptable carry. Bowling with reasonable
control and not trying to do too much started to pay off with the Marist batsmen making
starts but then making errors of judgement. Nicky nicked the first opener out in the fifth
over, and then produced a direct hit to send first drop back soon after. Bowling very tightly,
Tony had an early wicket to leave Marist 26/3 after ten overs. Nicky and Tony bowled
through, with Tony picking up another wicket to have Marist 44/4 after sixteen overs.
ECSCC Annual Report 2008/2009 Page 33
_________________________________________________________________________

Alan Needs and David took over the reins, and after settling in also started to find some
success. With most catches being taken (Stu White claiming a hat-trick of them), Marist
regularly lost wickets to find themselves 66/7 after 23 overs. Batting a fair way down the
order, Marist threatened the odd recovery until Alan had a catch taken in the slips. John
Kerrison, and Tony Blackler in particular, kept things under control during their spells,
before Alan returned at the end to see Marist dismissed with one ball to spare.

A solid start was required for the Easts reply, and that’s exactly what happened with
openers Alan and Stu putting on 36 in the first ten overs. Their quick dismissals saw Easts
slip to 41/3, until David and Nicky put on 30 for the fourth wicket. Nicky’s dismissal (caught
at first slip, like two other teammates) resulted in several more wickets with a partnership to
take us through not forthcoming. Chris Stenton helped Tony Gray move the score on from
92/7, but when Chris went just as Easts were starting to get on top sixteen more were
needed from six overs. John Kerrison came in and resolutely blocked up one end while
Tony added runs as they became available, helped by a dropped catch in the deep.

With the game tightening up more as the last overs wound down, seven were needed from
the last over with Tony Gray on strike, and Tony Blackler as the last man insurance policy.
A sharp two was taken early in the over, and then Tony hit the third ball over mid-wicket to
seal the game.

During 2008/2009 we did our best to put players and teams on the field to participate in and
enjoy a game of cricket. And the beer always tasted good at the clubrooms. Thanks to all
those who turned out for us this season, and special thanks to Nick Bates for assisting with
providing players from the other grades to help us field teams. Thanks also to Trevor
Hayes for supporting the team and giving the guys a break from umpiring. See you all
again soon.

PRESIDENTS GOLD
Sadly folks, no competition win to report this year.

In fact, we were doomed from the start. We went on our end-of-season trip to Aus and on
our team-shirt was Presidents Gold Champs 2003 - 2008. Well done shirt designers! I’m
thinking that one of our own had a bet with the Indian bookies.

To be fair, sooner or later some teams would be out to take the title from us, and OBCC
and LPW were those teams. Things were going well at the start, and we entered November
at the top - but then we got the batting wobbles. Three losses in a row by 12 runs or less
meant that we were chasing the above two clubs for the rest of the season. We were then
struck by injuries with Laurent and Bertson succumbing to broken fingernails (ok, breaks
….. but if you could catch ?) and Morel a problem back. (Who said he didn't have a spine?)

Another loss against Sydenham - again when chasing a total – probably settled our fate.
There was still a slim chance late in the season that we might win through, but key games
against the above top teams were washed out, and so our reign came to an end, finishing
third overall. Well done to OBCC for winning the competition - we did have the last win
though, beating them in a enjoyable golf day…. thanks to the Boyle Lewis Duckworth
system.

Well done too the players who held the team together with their consistent performances.
Donn will go to more detail in his report.

As this is my third year as captain, it is my last due to the team’s rotation policy. Thanks to
the squad and of course to the DONN. To the new captain, you will not be lacking in advice!

Further observations from Manager Donn Leckie.

As Arfur has so correctly stated, maybe we did tempt fate by adding the six years of our
competition wins onto the team shirts. However, as we all know, you can’t keep winning
forever, and we had only made it on the last day in one of those earlier seasons.
Nonetheless, even though it wasn’t a stellar season for us, we did play well in most games,
and, of the four games lost, only one was by a reasonable margin, the others being
definitely winnable.

We blew the game against LPW after having skittled them for 124, with only John Quinn
getting any runs for them. He then proceeded to do the same to us, some less than
average batting decisions leading to our demise. A chance blown!

Similar results in the next two weeks against OBC and Sydenham Hospital effectively put a
dent in our season’s chances before Christmas. Rained-off games in the second round
against LPW and OBCC ruined any chances of overhauling them.

_________________________________________________________________________

We had a total of 26 players go through the roster this year, including some former players
and a couple of new faces. Craig Gibb turned out a few times after many years away from
Christchurch and a former club player, Marc Wells, made a return and proved to be a useful
bowler in a couple of games. He may be back next season.

46 dropped catches and 10 ducks didn’t help our cause either, but that’s the way it is.

We lacked consistency in batting this year, with the exception of Niven Boyle who struggled
through, largely on his own, to rack up 502 runs for the season. Arfur, batting down the
order, came next with 336 and, of the rest, only Robbo, Duncan, Alby and Butch got past
200. We missed the steadying influence from the previous year of BA Murray, who has
now moved to Oamaru.

Bowling-wise, Arfur was the standout with 31 and a best of 5-27. Duncan, with his well-
flighted offies, taunted the batsmen for 25 wickets, and H was most economical, his 21
costing 13.24 each at 3.07 runs per over, with a best of 6-11 off 7.4 against Riccarton. Our
opening bowlers were combinations of Dave, Tim and Justin but they struggled to make the
early breakthrough at times. Despite that, they contained well in most innings. Robbo was
the surprise package, snaring 13 at 12.92.

In summary, a season of lost opportunities but, nevertheless, with some good cricket
played. The fine book did very well also, which reminds me there are some outstanding
debts to be collected.

Another season beckons in a few months.

PREMIER GRADE

After the disappointment of losing the one-day final of 2007/08, I was determined that
2008/09 would be our season.

We made some good acquisitions during the winter and got into the enviable position of
having twelve experienced senior players, plus a group of soon-to-be senior players in our
reserve grade squad. For the first time ever, we actually had to make selections.

If there was one reason we had a successful season, it was our depth. With the one-day
competition continuing while the State League was on, plus the usual distractions that take
the girlies out of cricket on any given Saturday, good depth is essential.

We had a strong team spirit and, with the team changing so much week to week, it was
needed. With the rep players coming and going, we were lucky to retain a core of players
who held things together. It was a great example of everybody putting the needs of the
team first, even if it meant their own role was limited.

In the one-dayers we lost our first game of the season on October 4 - but didn’t lose again
until January.

After qualifying top for the final on March 1st we did our utmost to lose it with our worst
bowling and fielding effort of the year. The batting of Sara and Kate P was outstanding on
a difficult pitch and gave us a competitive 139 from our reduced 25 overs. After 18 overs,
St Albans were cruising but some last minute heroics with the ball from Kate L and Hayley,
then Kim and Kate P, gave us a chance. With 10 required from the last over, Jess showed
great composure and we won by a single run. It was a nerve wracking near-disaster, but
the trophy was ours in the end, and I feel it signifies the best and most consistent effort from
an East Shirley women’s team in quite some time.

The one-day competition statistics make good reading, with three batsman averaging over
60: Sara McGlashan (464 runs at 77), Kate Pulford (447 runs at 74) and myself (608 runs at
67). With the ball, Tracy and Hayley stood out with 22 and 20 wickets respectively. Kim
and Kate P were outstanding with the new ball whilst Amy, Ema, Jess and Kate L also
bowled match-winning spells.
ECSCC Annual Report 2008/2009 Page 42
_________________________________________________________________________

There were two Twenty20 competitions played during the season, the first being the
Twenty20 Cup at Show Weekend. The only good thing to come out of this for us was that it
was really nice weather.

The second was the Twenty20 Trophy which was a double round-robin played in March.
We played some good cricket, qualified top of the table, and comprehensively won the final
on March 28th.

Batting might have won us the one-day competition but it was bowling that won the
Twenty20. Performances of note include the introduction of Morna Nielson, another
Northern Spirit representative who has joined the club while she studies at Canterbury
University. Opening the bowling with her left-arm spin, she quickly collected 12 wickets in
five matches at a strike rate of 7 with a best bowling of 4 for 24.

Hayley was outstanding opening the bowling and had an economy rate of 4.6 with a best
bowling of 3 for 5. Jess, Kim, Amy, Ema, Kate L and Tracy also bowled well and
consequently we never had to chase too many runs. Tori Burberry (nee Little) came out of
retirement for one Saturday and casually collected 5 for 10 from two overs, including a hat
trick, then went back into retirement.

The team had an injection of culture this year, with 24-year-old Japanese women’s captain,
Ema Kurabyiashi, joining us for the season. Her cricket came on immensely during her time
with the club. She was joined for a month by compatriot Shizuka Miyaji who also
contributed well with the ball. Thanks to everyone at the club who assisted these players
with accommodation and coaching and thanks to Steve Barry for sponsoring their Pro-
Fitness memberships.

On the representative front, Sara and Kate P both showed outstanding form in the State
League and both earned selection in the White Ferns for the Women’s World Cup in
Australia in March. The White Ferns training program in a World Cup year is onerous and
both Kate and Sara should be congratulated for the dedication and commitment they
showed to the club. Many White Ferns made limited club appearances but we got great
value from ours. Both were available whenever possible and contributed big scores with the
bat, as well as being a huge help to me on the field.

Krista again earned selection in the Canterbury Magicians, while Morna and I also turned
out for the Northern Spirit. Hayley and Leigh were selected in the Canterbury Development
Team.

At the start of the season we wanted to win a title for the legendary Bill Duncan. We
managed to pick up two and we hope he’d be immensely proud of his dolly birds.

I would like to thank and congratulate everyone who played for the senior team this year for
their dedication and attitude. Most importantly, however, I want to acknowledge that any
title won by the senior team is an achievement for the whole women’s section. We, as a
Senior team, would like to acknowledge and thank our Third Grade and First Grade teams
who always moved players up when required, despite the challenges it posed for their own
teams and the impact it had on their own results.
ECSCC Annual Report 2008/2009 Page 43
_________________________________________________________________________

As a Senior team we don’t ever have to play with less than eleven players but the lower
grades often do. This isn’t ideal but we thank all the players and coaches for putting up
with it and sticking at it.

Finally, thanks to everyone at the club for their support. We enjoy great support from the
coaches, management, the other teams, and club family and friends. We wouldn’t be able
to achieve anything without you and it’s great to bring some success back to the club.

FIRST GRADE

The start of the season was an exciting one for the First Grade
team with a number of talented players moving up from Third
Grade. Unfortunately, we lost some players along the way in
Leigh Martin, Sophie Laurent and Lara Thompson to travelling
and injury.

We didn’t go so well in our one-day competition but seemed to

do a lot better in the Super 8’s winning the competition
unbeaten!

There were a number of outstanding performances this season,

with Sandy Clark (highest score 74), Christine Wilson (highest
score 48) and Lucy Gunn (highest score 45) leading the way with the bat. Top bowlers were
Gina Aldersley (best figures 3-8), Megan Harkerss (best figures 5-12) and Jacinta Savage
(best figures 3-4).

Special congratulations to all of the girls who played up in the Premiers this season,
especially to Hannah Malloch whom we didn’t see much of towards the end of the season.

A big thank-you to all the Third Grade team, especially Heather Webb, for agreeing to come
up and play for us when needed.

Finally, a huge thank-you to all the First Grade girls for an enjoyable season and to our
dedicated coaches, Tracey, Garfield and Nev – we couldn’t have done it without you!

I hope to see you all back next season!!

THIRD GRADE

The Third Grade girls’ team nearly didn’t happen this season due to a lack of numbers.
However, the girls found some friends to help out and a team was entered but, even so, we
struggled every week with six to ten players.

We won just the one game, with a little help from First Graders Jacinta Savage and Sandy
Clark that day. But the win lifted the team, and we focused on batting out our overs for the
rest of the season.

Lucy Nicholson represented Christchurch Metro U15 Black at the Ashburton tournament,
and Rosie Tulisi and Olivia McGoverne played for CJCA rep teams. Olivia was her team’s
player of the tournament, the highlights being her 50 retired, and her diving catches.
Congratulations to these three representatives.

Heather Webb captained the side well, especially as we were usually short on numbers and
under-strength against the other clubs’ Third Grade sides, which all included U17 reps.
Heather had a good season with the bat, usually batting long innings, which included many
text-book drives. She was the leading run-scorer with 174 and the leading wicket-taker (12),
with the best economy rate (2.8). One bowling spell worthy of mention was in the first game
when she had the figures of 6-6-0-0.

When Heather was away, usually due to playing for First Grade, Venetia Stoffers and Lucy
shared the captaincy, and acquited themselves very well in that joint role. Venetia’s 38 was
the highest score of the team during the season. Lucy’s bowling seemed to add pace after
Ashburton and she deserved more wickets.

Players’ player of the season, Ashleigh Clark, showed vast improvement through the
season - she is developing a good cricket-brain. She was involved in many last over “run-
on-everything” situations and we’re looking forward to her batting and ‘keeping taking off
next season. Ana Avia-O’Conner showed in the last game she can bat for runs (9).
Rhiannon Campbell’s highlight would be two catches in one game, and Grace Cox shows
promise. Then there’s the young Singaporean immigrant, Shu Fen Tan. In October she
didn’t even know cricket existed, but showed up to enjoy the team game.

We are grateful to the First Graders who played for us, including Gina Aldersley. Thanks
also to Daisy Treddinick (2-0-8-1) from the Junior club for helping us one day.

We also thank those who coached the team: Tracy O’Neill, Garfield Charles, Neville Lyons
for the odd session, and Vicki Burtt from the CCA. Special thanks to Evan Webb for scoring
and transporting the team gear, even when his daughter Heather was away. His
scoreboard/gear bag trolley should be patented. And thanks to the other parents for
pitching in when asked to, especially Henk Stoffers.

The team will be back next year, but we will need a couple of new players, so please keep
us in mind if you have a daughter (aged 11 to 17 years old) or know of a girl who might be
interested in giving it a go.

JUNIOR REPORT

First off all, my special thanks to Dave Teale for all his support during the season. Dave put
in many hours on the computer to help with the membership list and in putting teams
together.

We had a rocky start with the passing away of Bill Duncan but luckily he had many things in
place.

Coaches
Thanks to all the volunteers: your contributions are vital and without them the Junior Club
could not survive. We are fortunate to have a number of keen parents and caregivers who
are prepared to put up their hand to manage a team and to run teams on Saturdays. We
could not provide a junior cricket programme without you. Special thanks to Peter Costello
as he had two teams to coach.

We have a great coaching structure - we can thank Neville Lyons for that - and we can
provide “coaching for coaches” at all levels, whether you’re new to coaching or an “old
hand” wanting to advance your skills. We had a few junior coaches who passed the level 1
coaching course this year, and this should benefit some of our junior sides next season.

I hope that many of you reading this report will be volunteering again to help out in the
coming season, whether as a coach or as a team manager.

Teams
We had fourteen teams this season, and, overall, the results were good, with player skills
improving. A number of talented players came to our notice, and we’ll be looking to see
them further advance.

Many teams went close to winning their grades, so well done. The East Shirley 8 side won
the Walter Hadlee Memorial Shield in Junior one-day cricket, so next season the team in
that grade will be in the position of having to defend that shield.

This year, there was again a bit off confusion at the Christmas changeover with the year 8
teams, with the end result that we had two teams less after Christmas. We hope that next
season there will be a better solution in place.

My thanks to John Crocott and his helpers who run the “Have a Go” teams on a Saturday.
This is where it all starts and seeing the kids having fun and learning good cricket basics
is very important to the club. Also, on Wednesdays we had extra training for them and the
Kiwi players, and once again, thanks to the parents who helped out with those sessions.

Representative Players
My congratulations to all players who made development teams. We had many boys
making teams from year 6 to year 8, so the future looks good for the club. We now need to
increase the number of girls playing the game - of those we do have, a number made the
trials and some made the Under 14 and Under 15 squads. To you all, well done. Many of
those players have been selected for winter training.

Fund raising
We again ran a Christmas raffle - my special thanks to Harry Burson for the many hours he
put in and for organising the great prizes. Because of the success of this raffle, our costs
in running the Junior Section are kept down. This money also goes towards offsetting the
cost of our “player of the day” functions at the club.

A big thankyou to our sponsors, and also to Carol Stoffers for the assistance in producing
end of season certificates and their presentation.

Prize Giving
This year we changed the format and, as luck would have it, the weather was perfect which
helped contribute to a very successful end to the season function. Well done to Henk for all
the time and effort he put in, to make sure it was success that it was. A special thanks to
the Senior men and women players and their coach who came and spent some time
playing cricket with our juniors.

Premier awards went to:

Howzat Trophy (most promising Year 5/6 ) - William Grocott
Hartley Trophy (most promising Junior) - Casey Marsh
Paul Sullivan Memorial Trophy (outstanding Junior) - Reuben Spicer
Ray Anderson Memorial Trophy (Junior coach of the year) - Peter Costello

Many thanks to the Powers family for cooking the BBQ in the hot sun and Venetia Stoffers,
for selling the raffle.

Next Season
This last season was a bit off a learning curve for me, and many of the decisions I made
were based on what I had picked up from my mentor, the late Bill Duncan - so I was
learning from the best.

So to next season. What I wish for is that a few more people would put up their hands to
manage, coach or come onto the Junior committee and help out. The more volunteers we
have, we can spread the tasks out and not be dependent on a few key individuals.

Playing wise, a key point for next season is to get more girls involved playing cricket. If we
do get an increase in numbers, then we may then be in a position to enter all girl sides into
competitions.

I am also hoping to encourage as many volunteers as possible to complete coaches

courses at Canterbury Cricket or through our own club programme.
