UT AUSTIN COURSES WHICH MEET MINIMUM ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR DENTAL/MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN TEXAS*
[REQUIREMENTS CAN CHANGE AT ANY TIME. CHECK BACK OFTEN FOR UPDATES AND REVIEW APPLICATION

SERVICE AND SCHOOL WEB SITES FOR CHANGES THAT MAY OCCUR BETWEEN UPDATES.] You should plan your academic program so that minimum preprofessional admission requirements are completed by the time you apply to professional school normally the summer following your junior year. This timing will place you in the most advantageous position for both your application and the DAT/MCAT. See General Information handout for details. Required courses may not be taken Pass/Fail. A grade of "C" or better (or AP credit) is required in each course used to meet dental/medical school admission requirements. (Admission to professional schools is very competitive. As a result, it is imperative that you consistently perform well academically. Admission statistics are available on the Career Design Center Website) Under normal circumstances, you are urged to carry more than the minimum course load. The time freed by advanced placement credit should be used for the enrichment of your collegiate experience rather than to lighten your academic load. CHEMISTRY: 16 SEM. HRS. GENERAL AND ORGANIC (and Biochemistry**) General Chemistry: 8 sem. hours (including lab) Students are urged to begin taking general chemistry during the freshman year because many biological science courses have chemistry prerequisites. CH 301 Principles of Chemistry I OR CH301H Principles of Chemistry I: Honors CH 302 Principles of Chemistry II OR CH302H Principles of Chemistry II: Honors CH 204 (lab) Intro. Chem. Pract. OR CH 317 (lab/lec.) Descriptive Inorganic Chem. Organic Chemistry: 8 sem. hours (including lab) from one of the following sequences: I. CH 310M Organic Chemistry I CH 310N Organic Chemistry II CH 210C Organic Chemistry Lab II. CH 318M, 118K (lab) AND 318N, 118L (lab) Organic Chemistry (may be elected by chem/engr. majors) Biochemistry: one semester** I. CH 369 Fundamentals of Biochemistry (recommended one-semester sequence) II. CH 339K AND CH 339L Biochemistry I and II (two-semester biochem sequence usually taken by biochem majors)
** Beginning with the 2012 entering class, one semester of biochemistry will be required for all dental schools in Texas. One semester of Biochemistry will also be required for San Antonio and Texas Techs medical schools. Biochemistry is a highly recommended elective for many medical and dental schools.

PHYSICS: 8 SEM. HRS. (including lab) from one of the following sequences: I. PHY 302K, 102M (lab) AND PHY 302L, 102N (lab) General Physics (sequence recommended for students who are not majoring in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, physics, or engineering) II. PHY 317K, 117M (lab) AND PHY 317L, 117N (lab) General Physics I & II (sequence recommended for premedical students who are not majoring in physics or engineering) III. PHY 301, 101L (lab) - Mechanics, AND PHY 316, 116L (lab) Electricity and Magnetism (sequence for chemistry majors planning a graduate program in chemistry, and physics majors) IV. PHY 303K, 103M (lab) AND PHY 303L, 103N (lab) Engineering Physics I & II (sequence for engineering majors)
* Admission requirements for out of state schools may differ; e.g., additional chemistry or math may be required. See the Medical School Admissions Requirements and the Official Guide to Dental Schools which are available in the Career Design Center.

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES: 12 SEM. HRS. Lecture and one year of Laboratory Experience There are no specific courses required; however, you are strongly encouraged to choose courses that will give you a broad background in the biological sciences. Students should consult an advisor in the Health Professions Office before registration if they are planning to use courses other than those listed below to meet the minimum admission requirements. Some of these courses are taught only in the Fall, others only in the Spring. Lecture: 12 sem. hours: Including 9 semester hours as follows: BIO 311C Introductory Biology I BIO 311D Introductory Biology II BIO 325 Genetics (Prerequisite for all upper-division biology courses at UT Austin) And 3 semester hours (most frequently chosen from the following)*: BIO 320 Cell Biology BIO 326R General Microbiology: Cell Structures/Genetics BIO 326M Introduction to Medical Microbiology/Immunology BIO 344 Molecular Biology BIO 345 Cell Physiology BIO 347 Biology and Genetics of Immune Disorders (generally offered fall only) BIO 349 Developmental Biology BIO 361 Human Infectious Diseases BIO 365R Vertebrate Neurobiology BIO 365S Vertebrate Systems Physiology BIO 366 Microbial Genetics BIO 366R Molecular Genetics (offered periodically) BIO 371M Neuronal Basis of Brain and Behavior (offered periodically) BIO 446L Human Microscopic & Gross Anatomy BIO 478L Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy (generally offered fall only)
* Some schools will accept CH 369 OR CH 339K in lieu of 3 hrs. biological science.
