Osteoporosis is a progressive bone disease that is characterized by a decrease in bone mass and density which can lead to an increased risk of fracture. In osteoporosis, the bone mineral density is reduced, and the amount and variety of proteins in bone are altered. Osteoporosis is defined by the World Health Organization as a bone mineral density of 2.5 standard deviations or more below the mean peak bone mass. The National Osteoporosis Foundations recommends 1,000 mg of calcium and 400-800 IU of vitamin D per day. For women over 50, 1,200 mg of calcium and 800-1,000 IU of vitamin D is recommended per day. A glass of milk, which is equivalent to 1 cup has about 300 mg of calcium and an 8oz yogurt has 300-400 mg.

Consider adding fortified vitamin D cereals or calcium and vitamin D enriched orange juice to your breakfast table. Another great morning addition for your bones is eggs. Just one egg has about 10% of your daily dose of vitamin D. Salmon is another great way of getting calcium and vitamin D. A 3oz. portion of salmon contains 400 IU of vitamin D and about 80 mg of calcium. Other calcium rich fish choices include tune, sardines, and mackerel. Winter falls, bone fractures may point to osteoporosis - USA Today Calcium, needed for strong bones, is found in dark green leafy vegetables, such as Chinese cabbage, kale, collard greens, turnip greens, mustard green, dandelion greens, and broccoli.
