Teacher Candidate: Sydney Subject/Grade: Kindergarten

Lesson # _2_____ Date and Time of Lesson: October 29, 2013

Learning Objective:
The student will use positional phrases to correctly place their 2 dimensional shapes where I ask them to be placed.

Alignment with Standards: Identify the source and list standards (local, state, and/or national) that align with the learning objective. K.GA.1 Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to. VAK-3.2 Select and use appropriate matter, symbols and ideas to communicate his or her ideas through visual art.

Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: The students will have prior knowledge of 2 dimensional shapes. From prior knowledge students should identify 2 dimensional shapes and use positional phrases to relocate them to their correct location that is being asked. Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
What assessment(s) will you use to determine student learning (pre, during, post)? Each objective should be aligned with an assessment. Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Pre-assessment: Using 2D shapes I will ask the students to relocate them according the positional phrase that I say. During assessment: The students will re-arrange themselves and 2D shapes on the smart board according to the positional phrase that I tell them. Post assessment: The students will create a scarecrow face made of shapes by placing them by the correct positional phrase. Use of Formative Assessment (TWS section 7) I can use this assessment data to discuss how we use positional phrases everyday, not just in math. I could tie in social studies while discussing different locations in our community. Example: The hospital is located beside the Subway.

Objective 1: The student will relocate 3/5 shapes in the correct location according to the positional phrase.

Accommodations:
For my early finishers, I can have them create a figure of any kind using 2 dimensional shapes. For my slower paced children, they will be allowed to finish during their center time. (This is what my teacher allows them to do now.) I am trying to incorporate all learning styles. Each child will have a chance to interact with the (during) activity.

Materials: 1. Smart board 2. 2 dimensional shapes pre-cut (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, hexagon) 3. Glue 4. Paper Procedures: 1. Can any one raise their hand and tell me what a 2 dimensional means? 2. Can someone raise their hand and tell me a 2 dimensional shape? 3. We will discuss what are positional phrases. 4. Students will be picked to do an activity with positional phrases (3-4 times) 5. One child will asked to be seated in a chair in the front of the classroom so everyone can see. 6. Another student will be given a shape to use to move locations according to the positional phrase. 7. Example (Cason, will you come and sit in the chair for me. Ava, I am going to give you a shape. What did I just give you? Can you move the shape above Cason's head? Can you move the shape beside Cason?) 8. I will pull up the smart board and make a circle (big and small), a square (big and small), a rectangle (big and small), a triangle (big and small), and a hexagon (big and small). 9. I will call up one child to move whatever shape I call out to the correct location according to the positional phrase. 10. I will show my example of my scarecrow face to my students as a whole group. 11. I will discuss the directions to them in detail letting them know that they MUST listen to what I say or they will get it wrong. 12. I will dismiss them to their seats and have them sit quietly while I pass out the materials. 13. I will go over each shape that is in their individual bags. (Circle, square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon) 14. I will start the assessment off by telling them to glue the big circle down on the sheet of paper in front of you. 15. Next glue the triangle in the middle of the big circle. 16. Glue the five small squares below the triangle as a mouth. 17. Glue the two small circles above the triangle for the scarecrow to have eyes. 18. Next glue the skinny rectangle right above the big circle at the top. 19. Above the skinny rectangle, glue the big rectangle. 20. Glue the two hexagons anywhere on top of the big rectangle for patches on the hat. Activity Analysis:
The first activity that I am going to do involves the students themselves. They will have to rearrange themselves according to the positional phrase that they hear. They will be interacting with each other, and using themselves in the situation. I believe that being involved, and engaged will help remember the content that is being taught. They will also do a similar activity using 2D shapes on the smart board. They will relocate the shapes according to the positional phrase. The post activity that I am doing has them listening to positional vocabulary, and they have to act according to what they hear by placing the right shape in the correct spot. This will help me assess their understanding of positional phrases. Each activity that I use will support the lesson objective. They all use positional vocabulary. These activities are

very hands on, and I feel that the students will learn very well from these experiences. I will be using the smart board to display different sizes of 2D shapes, and they will interact with the board themselves.
