Jennie Carr Educ 450 20 November, 2013 Assessment and Data Collection Assignment This assessment on ancient China, a lesson I will be teaching to my second graders in the spring, covers the Social Studies SOL 2.1, which reads, The student will explain how the contributions of ancient China and Egypt have influenced the present world in terms of architecture, inventions, the calendar, and written language. The SMART Goal that I created for my students states, On the a ncient China summative assessment, 85% of the students will score at least a 17/20, giving them an 85% examination score after the ten day unit is taught . For this assignment, the test was taken by ten people of various majors. There were three Business, four Psychology, one Sociology, one Health and Exercise Science, and one Art major, encompassing a good mixture of backgrounds, strengths, and weaknesses. As soon as my students saw that they would be taking an assessment on ancient China, there was immediate fear and reluctance. They stated that they did not personally remember learning about China when they were in elementary school, nor really at all throughout their schooling for that matter. I encouraged them that the grade did not matter and that this was purely for my own benefit to assess my own test, though I was really hoping no one would bomb it, thus proclaiming me a horrible assessment creator. Each of the participants seemed fairly at ease while taking it, except for with one question in particular. Question number fourteen asks the student to circle the inventions of ancient China from a group of eight possibilities. Many of the participants referenced back to their answer for number four, which also asks about the inventions, requiring students to pick which one of four was not given to us by the Chinese. I

Evans 2 noticed that the ones who used this technique received more points, if not full credit, for number fourteen. When broken down, five people incorrectly labeled two inventions, four incorrectly labeled one, and one labeled them all correctly. The next question that gave the most problems, with four people missing it, was number thirteen. This question regarded the length of the Great Wall, with the correct answer being over 10,000 miles. With the famous proclamation that this structure can be seen from space, I was hoping that it would not cause any major issues, but this assumption was incorrect on my part. The final question that more than one person missed, three in this case, was number three, which was in regards to the original purpose of the Great Wall. Since these were the top three questions missed, it appears the two main areas I will need to focus on during this unit are the Great Wall and the inventions. With the way my unit is laid out currently, I will be spending an entire lesson on the Great Wall and one day for each individual invention. In terms of the inventions, each of them will be added to a flip book at the end of each lesson so that the students will have them all compiled into one spot. Since there will be so much emphasis placed on each invention, I am not too worried about this question for my second graders. Every day, we will discuss that particular contribution and how it was used then, as well as how it continues to be used today. It is my goal to create a personal connection between the students and each invention so that they retain it and connect it to China. I will do this primarily by bringing in actual examples of the contributions for the students to work handson with, believing that this makes it more concrete and relevant to their lives. While my participants all did very well on the test, allowing me to both meet and surpass my SMART Goal, it certainly was not a perfect test. Through this assignment, I was able to see some spots where my assessment was indeed flawed. One of these flaws was on question fourteen. Evans 3 I will add that there are five points possible for this question, meaning that there are five correct answers altogether. Though I am confident that my second graders will be able to label them without this extra prompt, it can only be helpful in the long run. It will also better organize the test, as I had not previously thought about the points that would be allocated to this question. In conjunction with this issue, I had not thought to assign points to question fifteen either, which is a very short answer question requiring just a sentence or two to describe how one of the inventions is still used today. I decided to assign two points to this in order to make the test a total of 20 solid points. Also, I may add a matching section to the test that focuses solely on the vocabulary terms from this unit. Since I will be doing a vocabulary game the day before the final assessment on the review day, I think it would be wise to test that knowledge more specifically. Overall, I am happy with the results of this assignment, with 90% of the students receiving a 17/20 or higher, making my SMART goal a success. One student received a 16/20 on the assessment, which was hard for me grade, yet prepared me slightly for what it might be like in the future when grading. This assignment also allowed me to pinpoint what areas I need to adjust to improve my assessment in order to better align with my future students understanding and overall success.
