3rd International Workshop on Service Oriented Computing

December 16th, 2009

Kochi, India
http://www.cse.iitb.ac.in/~umesh/WSOC09

The Third International Workshop on Service Oriented Computing (WSOC) will take place in
Kochi, India on 16th December, 2009. The workshop, like previous years (SENOPT), is intended
to address a wide range of issues in the design of scalable, configurable, and high-performance
applications built on web-services architectures and Cloud Computing technologies. This workshop
will provide a forum to discuss innovative development methodologies, design principles, software
architectures and frameworks used to create large scale, rapidly configurable software systems
using service-oriented abstractions. WSOC’09 will address the two specific themes of Cloud
Computing and Service Composition.
The workshop will be co-located with the 16th IEEE Intl Conf on High Performance Computing
(HiPC 2009) http://www.hipc.org/

CALL FOR PAPERS

Workshop Theme:
One of the emerging trends in the era of network centric computing is to deliver a wide range of
IT functions as a service over the Internet. This model of services-oriented computing is an
attractive option for enterprises to dynamically adapt their IT systems based on demand. To cater to
this changing trend, enterprise applications are being transformed to use service-oriented
architectures, emphasizing loose coupling and high reuse. There is a clear need for novel
architectures and platforms that enable easy transformation of existing applications to host them on
a Cloud. Further, the huge scale of Cloud Computing and the dynamics of service availability offer
several research challenges in realizing Cloud platforms and developing Cloud applications.

The proposed workshop will provide a venue for academic and industry researchers to discuss
issues and solution approaches for design of such futuristic large-scale applications and platforms
that can host them. Of particular interest for this year will be novel service composition systems
and platforms for hosting Cloud-Services.

Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that demonstrate current research
and/or practice on developing service oriented software systems.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to :
• Structure of service oriented systems
• Resource request protocols: advertising, brokering, negotiation, match-making
• Web services: composition, discovery, semantics, verification
• Programming frameworks
• Middleware and runtime systems
• Fault tolerance and reliability
• Qualitative aspects
• Metrics for measuring QOS, performance,
• Theoretical performance analyses: complexity, correctness, scalability, fault-tolerance
• Theoretical models and simulations
• Operational aspects
• Security and trust
• Usage and billing metrics
• Service level agreements
• Use of Semantics
• Practical implementations and applications
• Cloud platforms and frameworks
• SaaS and Mashup systems
• Novel Applications for Cloud Services
• Case studies of real world deployments

PAPER SUBMISSION
Authors are invited to submit original unpublished work demonstrating innovation in the topics of
interest to the workshop. Routine applications using existing software will not be entertained. A
work in progress is also welcome. Submitted papers should not have appeared in or be under
consideration for another workshop, conference, or a journal. Submissions will be reviewed for
their technical strength, correctness, originality, significance, quality of presentation and relevance
to the workshop.
Submitted manuscripts should be in PDF format and not exceed 10 pages, including references,
figures and tables. The formatting requirements are 11-point font size on 8.5 x11 inch single-spaced
pages in 2-column format. The author can find some example templates and additional writing
guidelines at http://www.sigplan.org/authorInformation.htm
Authors should submit the manuscript in PDF format on the submissions site using EasyChair
Conference Tool.
Proceedings including all accepted papers will be distributed at the workshop.
