Thriller
The term Thriller is a movie genre which has been used to categorised certain movies that convey the elements of suspense, shock and surprise. The idea of creating a thriller is to immerse the audience deep into what's going appearing on screen keeping them on the edges of their seats. Thrillers are usually mixed up with horrors as some thrillers contain scenes which some viewers may find horrifying. The first Thriller made was safety last made in 1923, directed by Fred C. Newmeyer and Sam Taylor, where a store clerk asks a friend to climb a tall building as a publicity stunt, although when the police gets involved he is forced to climb it himself as well. Thrillers keep the audience entertained and locked onto the screen due to what the protagonist is either doing at that given moment or going through psychologically. Of recent years Thriller's have become an ever so vastly growing genre which has attracted more and more viewers over the years. It's popularity has been increased by various film franchises such as 'Saw' and The Hybrid genre film franchise 'Alien'. A hybrid genre is the outcome of two different genres combined together to create a film which consists of the codes and conventions of both genres. For example the film 'Alien' progresses as a normal horror film would with its typical jump scares and non diegetic score music which is used to create a tense and horrifying atmosphere, plus the eeriness of a thriller, the ability to engage the audience through various means of mise en scene and sound. A more prominent feature of a thriller is that the protagonist is shown to be realistic therefore he/she is not without error or flawed and this

error/flaw is their downfall, This flaw causes their demise and happy endings aren't common in thrillers. Top ten thrillers of all time: 10) The sixth sense(1999) 9) Vertigo(1958) 8) Seven(1995) 7) Night of the hunter(1955) 6) Manchurian candidate (1962) 5) Silence of lambs(1991) 4) Psycho(1960) 3) Rear window(1954) 2) Chinatown(1974) 1) North by northwest(1959) Sub-genres: psychological thriller; These rely more on hero's mental abilities to solve his problem or survive his ordeal less on the physical side of things, suspense is built in the protagonists mind, and often these films incorporate a sense of mystery and drama into the film alongside all the features of a normal thriller. Films such as: Se7en (1995), The Machinist (2004), The Silence Of Lambs(1991). In every one of these films and pretty much every film in this subgenre it's all about mind games. The problem being faced by the protagonist is a mind-game, if not being created by a villain, then one being created by their sub-conscience.
