Impressed by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby (the writers of the original Sandman), Gaiman wanted to bring it back, but instead created a new version, a newer, darker Sandman. The new version is a supernatural fictional story comprised of 75 issues. Artists: Sam Keith, Mike Dringenberg, Malcolm Jones III, Dave McKean (Mike Dringenberg lasted through the entire making of the Sandman series.) Main Character: Morpheus, a.k.a. Dream. Based on the Greek mythological figure from the 14th century. His bag of endless sand is used to send people into deep sleep. Genre: Supernatural Fiction

Neil used storyline techniques similar to that of Lewis Carrolls Alices Adventures in Wonderland. For example, compare these two party scenes. Though both show things that cant be real, Alices unreality connects more with me because its a little more believable.

Just like most DC comics, the artwork (mostly the scenery) and the characters appear realistic in style. Edvard Munchs painting, The Scream has an art technique used to set the mood, just like in the Sandman

The 1st volume, Preludes & Nocturnes contains 8 stories. Dream becomes imprisoned by members of a cult who take his 3 tools he uses to rule the Dreamworld. He breaks free from imprisonment 70 years later and then begins a quest to recover them. To help reestablish his kingdom, he searches for his siblings known as the Endless: Dispair, Death, Destruction, Delirium, Desire, and Destiny.

Main points: I can be very patient like Morpheus (but not for 70 years). At first, people may seem like theyre bad because of their appearance, but after you get to know them, then you may be surprised that you actually find some good in them. Such a story can be said for everyone at some point in life.

The legend of Morpheus from Greek Mythology

According to Greek mythology, Morpheus has the ability to enter peoples dreams and take the form of anything. It was Morpheus who creates the dreams. A similar childrens story is what I believed the Sandman had originated from.
