The Cold Within

James Patrick Kinney
Six humans trapped by happenstance in black and bitter cold, Each possessed a stick of wood Or so the storys told. Their dying fire in need of logs the first woman held hers back, For on the faces around the fire She noticed one was black. The next man looking cross the way Saw one not of his church, And couldnt bring himself to give The fire his stick of birch. The third one sat in tattered clothes He gave his coat a hitch, Why should his log be put to use To warm the idle rich? The rich man just sat back and thought Of the wealth he had in store, And how to keep what he had earned From the lazy, shiftless poor. The black mans face bespoke revenge As the fire passed from his sight, For all he saw in his stick of wood Was a chance to spite the white. And the last man of this forlorn group Did naught except for gain, Giving only to those who gave Was how he played the game. The logs held tight in deaths stilled hands Was proof of human sin, They didnt die from the cold without, They died from the cold within.

MIRRORS IN NATURE CHRIS PUTTOCK

The main thing that we have to remember is that the reflections in nature. The perfect mirror in nature is water. The water is a perfect mirror for the ability to manipulate the image while maintaining that the original objects reflection. The perfect example of this is the Water Meadows in Wickham. This is because of the fact that the water both moves and can show stillness. The reason for this is because it has both fast and slow moving water. This means that where the water moves the fastest it also has a more blurred and abstract image and where the water is more still the image has a strong and bold reflection. The reflection of the bridge is one of my favourite images. It gives both the perfect reflection in the stillness of the water while giving the bridge the primary focus. The couple in the middle of the bridge are almost like a simple touch that people will find makes it more memorable. The simplicity of this image is what I find gives it character and with the light being almost perfect for what we see the image in it just makes it easier to accept the facts. The thing I would compare this to is like a Postcard to loved ones or a picture in a romance.

The reflections in the next two pictures were perhaps the most challenging to get. This was because of the fact that the camera had a lot of things that needed doing in order for the images to be successful. The first thing that needed to be done is the zoom needed to be adjusted and due to the cameras ability to focus being a bit of a pain that was painstakingly annoying too. The most agitating part of taking these pictures was perhaps the fact that they needed to be as square as possible. Squaring the picture was key to making it work. Without the added benefit of a tripod I stood as square as possible and down on one knee to prevent shaking. When the pictures were finally taken I have to admit that the end result was a satisfaction beyond words. The main thing that you need to remember when taking any photos like these is probably the fact that they need to be taken on the right day with the correct adjustments to the cameras functions. As my great teacher taught me if the pictures there go back until you get it. If the pictures there youll find it.

Inside the Refle

So Josh, what got you into photography ?
Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated by cameras. I have always enjoyed capturing moments however over the last few years I have become very passionate about my photography and have progressed in new ways.

Have you got any favourite spots around Portsmouth?

I have always loved the sea and the pictures you can get around it, due to this its probably the beach.

What is your preference when it comes to digital , film cameras etc ?

My personal preference is digital, It is quick easy and effective. As long as my camera goes on charge the night before the shoot it will be full most of the day, and if that fails I have spare batteries. This cuts out buying film which makes things cheaper & more convenient.

What camera do you use yourself ? Are there any key features that help with your photography ?
My weapon of choice Is a Nikon D5100 , I bought it about 2 years ago and it has never failed me. When I bought the camera it came with the standard lens, since however I have invested in a fish-eye & Zoom lens which I dont leave the house without. The Nikon D5100 is very diverse and has many helpful settings, which can easily be changed easily.

Why reflections ?
Why reflections ? Why not ? I find taking pictures of reflections both challenging & rewarding. Partially because reflections are changing throughout the day, this means several options are available but also means you have to get the shot or you could miss your opportunity. This makes photographing it exciting & enjoyable.

Thanks for your time Josh.

Southsea Stroll
This walk bought a multitude of new locations to light for the group and me; this included a number of spots along the seafront at southsea. The majority of the sites that we found were focused around historical and scenic landmarks, for example; the spinnaker tower and the war memorial. The Spice Island Inn is a pub on Spice Island, whilst walking past the outside a reflection caught my eye, this was a reflection of the spinnaker tower and gunwarf quays across the water. I really like how this image turned out because the framing of the tower in the window is perfect.

Brandon Begg On a cold winters afternoon we went for a stroll to scout locations and find scenes to shoot for our magazine.

A WALK AROUND TOWN

These few images were from a day out around Southsea. I focused mainly on landmarks however I experimented when I got the chance. The lighthouse worked well , this was due to its sheer size and the position of the fountain. The main issue was the wind as it effected the ripples on the water, this meant perfect conditions & timing were needed when capturing this image. Once again this shows how timing and other elements challenge you when capturing images of reflections.

Summer Reflections The bright colors and circling clowns all smiles and cheer. The sound of bagpipes, and the frolics of a vibrant parade. A beautiful day, filled with happiness and love began my summer.

Summer Reflections

Rebekah Mann

I read books, sent letters, wrote poetry, and lived in the blissfulness of love. Then a trip to the zoo-park brought the stormy clouds into my view. The dark swirling emotions grabbed my heart and held firm. I twisted and squirmed under the weight of my own internal conflicts. So strong and creative were they that it was months before my heart settled. Now, in reflection, how sadly I pin for wasted time in such a dark state. Yet, I find my love stronger and my relationship more mature. Perhaps the time was not so wasted

I didnt see or imagine the clouds that circled in my future. The sun glowed in my smile, as I went to Saturday markets and parks hand in hand with my boyfriend. I was in love, and the joy of blues skies only added to my delight. Time was not taxing as days turned into weeks.
