1. (a) Explain the following terms:


i. Exchange current density
ii. Over voltage
iii. Mixed electrode.
(b) Explain the effect of fluid velocity and temperature on corrosion rate. [6+10]

2. (a) Explain why ?


i. Iron can be passivated in water only when it flows at a high rate ?
ii. Nitrate ions are much weaker passivators for iron than the nitrite ions, in
spite of the proximity of their redox potentials?
iii. Tafel relationship is followed in the active and transpassive regions but
not in the passive region?
iv. Chromium alloying with iron promotes corrosion resistance to the resul-
tant alloy?
(b) What are the basic requirements for passivation of a metal? How can these
requirements be full-filled ? Give examples. [8+8]

3. (a) Suggest five methods to prevent pitting corrosion of aluminium alloys.


(b) Explain why aluminium is not a satisfactory material for handling potable or
industrial water, but satisfactory for distilled water? [8+8]

4. (a) Indicate the characteristic property for the following parameters towards SCC
shown by an alloy :
i. Temperature increase
ii. Crack morphology
iii. Presence or absence of corrosion product in the crack
iv. Crack surface appearance
v. Stress level -
(b) Schematically represent the effect of simultaneous tensile stress, susceptible
metallurgical condition , and critical corrosive solution required for stress cor-
rosion cracking.
(c) Discuss graphically rate of SCC propagation as a function of crack depth and
specimen extension as a function of time during constant-load stress-corrosion
cracking test [5+5+6]

1. (a) Explain in detail about galvanic corrosion. Explain the need of having galvanic
series rather than emf series.
(b) A Daniel cell is discharging at 1/10 amp. What is the rate of corrosion of
zinc rod made in mpy. The amode is 1am in diameter and is immersed to a
depth of 15cm in the electrolyte (density of zinc = 7 g/cc); electrochemical
equivalent of zinc=0.3387 mg/coulomb. [8+8]

2. (a) i. Calculate whether copper will corrode in deaerated CuSO4, pH=0, to


form Cu++ (activity=0.1) and H2 =1 atm. What is the corrosion tendency
in Volts?
ii. Similarly, calculate whether copper will corrode in deaerated KCN (activ-
ity CN − = 0.5) of pH=10, assuming Cu(CN)− 2 is formed whose activity
= 10 −4

(b) i. Calculate the emf of a concentration cell made up of Copper electrodes in


0.1 M CuSO4 and 0.5 M CuSO4 neglecting liquid junction potential.
ii. Write the spontaneous reaction of the cell and indicate which electrode is
anode? [8+8]

3. (a) Indicate two criteria for uniform corrosion to take place.


(b) Mention two common examples for uniform corrosion.
(c) Graphically explain effect of relative humidity and various impurities on rust-
