FINDING JOY IN TRUSTING GOD
Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the Son of God who came to save the world. The great story of Christmas centers on Jesus, but His parents, Mary and Joseph, are also worth our attention. Marys full cooperation in Gods plan was revealed in the bible. Josephs role in the Christmas story is portrayed in the gospel today. He was betrothed to Mary when he learned that she was with child even before they lived together. He was a righteous man who had a good relationship with God. By law, Mary is considered to have committed adultery and deserved the punishment of death, and yet Joseph was unwilling to expose her to shame so he decided to divorce her quietly, until God intervened in a dream to make His divine plan realized. The child of Mary was conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit. So Joseph took Mary as his wife and fulfilled Gods plan, and he became the foster father of Jesus, taking care of him and protecting him with all his love and strength. Joseph followed Gods will and put aside his own plan. He trusted God for his life and future so he set aside his personal wishes in order to become Gods instrument. In contrast, Ahaz, the king in the story of the first reading, would not trust in God because he believed more in human and military power to save his kingdom. Unlike Joseph, Ahaz was not open to the wonder of Gods love and would not trust Him, and this led to his destruction. Joseph was able to behold the glory of God

in his own arms through the birth of Jesus. He found joy in trusting Gods plan for his life. He was able to behold the fulfillment of what Isaiah the prophet foretold, The virgin shall
conceive and give birth to a son, and they shall call him Emmanuel. As we sometimes say, Man proposes but God disposes. There is more joy in trusting God than relying on human wisdom because God knows what is best for us.
