The Faculty of Education English Language Requirement Policy is consistent with the Monash Admission to doctoral and MPhil candidature - English language proficiency requirements stated at: http://www.mrgs.monash.edu.au/research/doctoral/chapter2d.html

Coursework (Non-Research) Degrees


The Faculty of Education English language requirement policy is consistent with the Monash University English language requirement policy which is part of the Admissions to Coursework Courses and Units of Study policy http://www.policy.monash.edu/policy-bank/academic/education/admissions/admissioncoursework-courses-units-of-study-policy.html and the related English language entrance requirements procedure which is part of the Admissions to Coursework Courses and Units of Study procedures http://www.policy.monash.edu/policy-bank/academic/education/admissions/admissionscoursework-courses-units-of-study-procedures.html

Note 1: English-medium educational institution An institution where the use of English as the language of instruction, communication and assessment for all aspects of study for the whole of the educational institution within which an applicant has undertaken a course of study which is relied upon for the purpose of satisfying the entrance requirements of the university, as certified to be the case by the registrar (or other authorised person) of the educational institution to the satisfaction of the Academic Board. Note 2: Where the applicant's secondary schooling was not entirely in English. A measure of English proficiency, other than a successfully completed bachelor's degree, may only be considered where it has been completed within two years prior to the applicant's commencement in the course of study to which admission is sought; and A successfully completed undergraduate degree may only be considered where it has been completed within five years prior to the applicant's commencement in the course of study to which admission is sought. Recency requirements can be waived in cases where applicants reside in one of the listed approved countries in Section 2.2.1 of the Admission to Coursework Courses and Units of Study procedures.

1.

Undergraduate courses

1.1 Applicants to courses* without a Practicum component


As stated in the Monash English language entrance requirements procedure which is part of the Admissions to Coursework Courses and Units of Study procedures * Courses to which these requirements apply: Bachelor of Adult Learning and Development Bachelor of Business / Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation Bachelor of Sport and Outdoor Recreation Honours Degree of Bachelor of Education

Faculty of Education English Language Requirements Policy

1.2 Applicants to courses* with a Practicum component


Applicants to undergraduate courses which include a practicum need to provide evidence of substantial proficiency in English, since they will be working with real clients or students.

1.2.1 Applicants whose secondary schooling was entirely in English


As stated in the Monash English language entrance requirements procedure which is part of the Admissions to Coursework Courses and Units of Study procedures.

1.2.2 Applicants whose secondary schooling was not entirely in English


As stated in the Monash English language entrance requirements procedure which is part of the Admissions to Coursework Courses and Units of Study procedures, with the section referring to English Tests replaced by a minimum overall IELTS test score of at least 6.5 with individual band scores required at 6.5 for Reading, 6.5 for Listening, 6.0 for Writing and 6.0 for Speaking. A minimum overall internet-based TOEFL test score of at least 79 with individual band scores required at 19 for Reading, 20 for Listening, 21 for Writing and 18 for Speaking.

Graduate/Postgraduate courses

2.1 Applicants to courses* without a Practicum component


As stated in the Monash English language entrance requirements procedure which is part of the Admissions to Coursework Courses and Units of Study procedures * Courses to which these requirements apply: Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Graduate Certificate in Organisational Development Graduate Certificate in Regional Education and Community Development Graduate Diploma in Regional Education and Community Development Master in Adult Education (Global) Master in Organisational Leadership Master in Regional Education and Community Development Master in School Leadership Master of Applied Linguistics for Language Teachers Master of Education (TESOL International)

Master of Education, Postgraduate Diploma of Education and Postgraduate Certificate of Education programs without a specialism or with a specialism in: Early Childhood Gifted Education Information and Communication Technology in Education International Education Leadership, Policy and Change Literacy Studies Mathematics and Science Education Music Education Teaching Languages Other Than English Work and Learning Studies Postgraduate Certificate in Organisational Leadership Postgraduate Diploma in Organisational Leadership Postgraduate Diploma of Psychology

2.2 Applicants to courses* with a Practicum component


Applicants to graduate/postgraduate courses which include a practicum need to provide evidence of substantial proficiency in English, since they will be working with real clients or students.

2.2.1 Applicants whose secondary schooling was entirely in English


As stated in the Monash English language entrance requirements procedure which is part of the Admissions to Coursework Courses and Units of Study procedures Note: Satisfactory completing a Monash University faculty certificate, faculty diploma, executive certificate or executive diploma comprising at least 24 credit points of postgraduate-level units does not meet the proficiency in English requirement for a course with a practicum component.

2.2.2 Applicants whose secondary schooling was not entirely in English


As stated in the Monash English language entrance requirements procedure which is part of the Admissions to Coursework Courses and Units of Study procedures, with the section referring to English Tests replaced by a minimum overall IELTS test score of at least 7.0 with individual band scores required at 6.5 for Reading, 6.5 for Listening, 7.0 for Writing and 7.0 for Speaking. A minimum overall internet-based TOEFL test score of at least 94 with individual band scores required at 19 for Reading, 20 for Listening, 27 for Writing and 23 for Speaking.

* Courses to which these requirements apply: Master in Counselling Master of Education and Postgraduate Diploma of Education with a specialism in: TESOL Teaching Languages Other Than English

2.2.3 Applicants undertaking Initial Teacher Education courses*


As stated in 2.2.1 or 2.2.2 with the section referring to English Tests replaced by a minimum overall IELTS test score of at least 7.5 with individual band scores required at 7.0 for Reading, 7.0 for Writing, 8.0 for Listening and 8.0 for Speaking. A minimum overall internet-based TOEFL test score of at least 102 with individual band scores required at 24 for Reading, 28 for Listening, 27 for Writing and 26 for Speaking. Candidates may also satisfy the English Language entry requirements by successfully completing a preparatory course in English language skills, at the appropriate level, at the Monash University English Language Centre (MUELC).

2.2.4 Applicants undertaking Master of Psychology courses*


Candidates must meet the minimum entry requirements as stated in 2.2.1 or 2.2.2. In addition all applicants must also meet the English language requirements of the Psychology Board of Australia (PBA). Consult the PBA website to ensure you meet these requirements (www.psychologyboard.gov.au). * Courses to which these requirements apply: Master of Psychology (Counselling); Master of Psychology (Counselling)/PhD; Master of Psychology (Educational and Developmental); Master of Psychology (Educational & Development)/PhD;

Single unit enrolment

Applicants for single unit enrolment


As stated in the Monash English language entrance requirements procedure which is part of the Admissions to Coursework Courses and Units of Study procedures Note: Where the single unit enrolment involves a practicum, the relevant requirements from the Undergraduate or Graduate/Postgraduate section of this policy will apply.
