Preparationbeforethegrouparrives: Thefirstclassofthedayshouldopenthearcheryshed andsetoutthetargets,arrows,andbows. Setoutequipment Thisincludesgettingouttwoorange flagsfromtheoffice,openinguptheshed,settingout three targetsontheirwoodenstands,and twoarrow rackswith3arrowsforeachshootingtarget. *Ifthegroupisleadingthisactivitymakesuretosetout orangeflagsontheporchoftheadministrationbuilding andtounlocktheshedforthem. Ifyouarerighthandedyouwillneedtousearight handedbowandholditinyourlefthand.Thebow shouldnever touchtheground.Theywillgetdamaged easilybydirtgettinglodgedintheirwheels. Stance Yourbodyshouldbeparalleltothetargetwiththetipsof yourtoeslinedup(90degreeangle)withthecenterof thetarget. Onlyyourheadturnstofacethetarget,not yourentirebody. Nockinganarrow Thearrowhasmanypartsincluding:tip,shaft, fletching/feathers,cockfeather,andnock. Thenockis the partofthearrowthatconnectsittothebowstring. Youdo not needto holdontothearrow,thatisthe nocksjob! Theshaftofthearrowwillrestonthearrow restofthebow. Preptofire Graspthestringwiththreefingershavingthearrowin betweentheindexandmiddlefingers. Youshould not wrapyourfingersallthewayaroundthebowstring onlythetipsofyourfingersshouldbe usedtopullback onthestring. Next, turnyourheadtowardsthetarget andextendthe armholdingthebowso thatitisparallel tothegroundandstraight(nobentelbow). Firing Drawthearrowbackfarenoughsothatyouhandcomes backtoyourjawbone. Thisarmshouldalsobeparallel totheground(nochickenarm). Also,makesurethatthe elbowonthearm thatisholdingthebowisrotated outwardsothatthestringdoesntslaponyourarm. Aimingisdonewiththedominanteye,sightingdownthe endofthearrowtowardsthetarget.Toreleasethe arrow,simplyrelaxyourfingertips.Followthroughby keepingyourfingersrightbyyourfaceandyourbow armextendeduntilthearrowhashitthetarget.Ifyou dropyourarmstooquickly,thearrowcouldstillbe exitingitandwillgetknockedoffitspath. Justlikeanyothersportorskill ittakespracticetoreally getthehangofit. Ourgoalisnotforyoualltoleaveas expertarcherswhohitabullseyeeverytime,buttotry andtofeelmorecomfortablewithshootingthanwhen youarrived. Shooting: Dividethestudentsintothreegroups,onegroupper shootinglane.Thismeansthatonlythreepeopleare shootingatatime. Studentsshootthreearrowsbefore theygoandretrievethemforthenextpersoninline. Donotwigglethearrowaroundtoremove it,simplypullasstraightaspossible. Thispreventsthe arrowsfrombendingandthetargetsfromgettinglarge holesinthem. Herearesomeideas: Tapecardsontothetargets Tape balloonsorstuffedanimals tothetargets Scoreeachroundbyhavingeachcolorworthapoint value.Havethestudentskeeptrackoftheir individualscoreorasateam. Putapieceofmaskingtapeanywhereonthetarget. Studentscantrytohitthepieceoftape,hitoneend ofthetape,orcansimplyaimtohaveallarrowshit ononesideortheotherofthetape.

Havestudentsdrawapicturetotapeontothetarget (ex:donut,star,etc).Theyarenotallowedtodrawa person. Eliminationgame:Eachpersonshootsthreearrows, studentswhohitthebullseye(oranyothercolorof yourchoosing)movesontothenextround.Forthe nextround,studentsonlyhave2arrowswithwhich tohittheappointedtargetarea.Forthefinalround studentsonlyshootonearrow,andwhoeveris closestwins.

Conclusion: Attheendofeachclassmakesurethatallequipmentis accountedfor.Allbowsshouldbehungintheshed betweenclasses.Ifmultipleclassesarebeingtaughtthe targetsmayremainout.
