BHUBANESWAR: The wom an school teacher from Ray agada, who was set on fire for refusing to withdraw a com plaint of sexual harassm ent against her official boss, died at 1 1 .1 4 am on Friday . Itishree Pradhan (2 7 ), a teacher (Sikhy a Sahay ak) at Tikiri Upper Prim ary School, died at a priv ate hospital in Vishakhapatnam after battling for life for six day s with 9 0% burn injuries. The incident had taken place on the night of October 2 7 when a person entered a hostel on the school cam pus where she was stay ing and asked her to withdraw a com plaint of sexual harassm ent against school inspector (SI)

Vizag on WHO polio vaccine project list

VISAKHAPATNAM: The National Im m unisation Policy m ay be in for a change with oral polio v accines (OPV) being replaced by injectable polio v accines (IPV), thanks to a WHO-funded clinical trial and research undertaken by the paediatric departm ent of Andhra Medical College (AMC) on 3 00 newborns. AMC is one of the four m edical centres from India selected for this crucial trial being carried out on 9 00 newborns in Vizag, Hy derabad and Pune. Howev er, the inclusion of expensiv e IPVs instead of OPVs for countries like India in the im m unisation program m e raises questions about the profit m otiv es of pharm a m ultinationals, said experts. VISAKHAPATNAM: Nearly 50,000 denizens of 1 3 residential localities falling under the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) lim its are haunted at the prospect of the rising water lev els in the Meghadrigedda reserv oir posing a threat to their life and property due to the incessant rains. Water lev els in the reserv oir hav e been running full, and on Friday afternoon, GVMC officials had to release 1 3 ,4 00 cusecs of water into the Bay of Bengal by lifting four of the reserv oir's six sluice gates up to two feet. Vizag faces rainwater logging as civic body fails to desilt drains

VISAKHAPATNAM: The northeast m onsoon continuously pounding the city since its onset on Monday has left m any low ly ing areas in the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) lim its inundated due to lack of proper de-siltation and m aintenance of storm water drainage sy stem by the civ ic body . According to social activ ist and form er bureaucrat EAS Sarm a, four key things need to be done for the free flow of water in the storm water drainage. "This includes proper continuous m aintenance of drains, prev ention of encroachm ents along the drains, taking up awareness cam paigns am ong people residing on either side of the drains and undertaking de-siltation prior to the rainy season," Sarm a said, recalling an incident fiv e y ears ago in which two slum dwellers died after drowning in the Ootagedda storm water canal passing through Maharanipeta and Century Club near Beach Road.
