55th Wedding Anniversary Dec. 27
Bill and Louise Frey will celebrate their 55th wedding anniversary
December 27. They were married December 27, 1958, in the Covington Church of the Brethren by the Reverend Higgins.
Their family includes two daughters and a son: Sherri Colby (Jim
Higgins) of Troy, Kelly and Mike Watercutter of Troy, and Bill and
Cami Frey of Houston. They have four grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren, a great-grandson and a step great-granddaughter.
Bill is retired from Terra and served in the National Guard for 30
years. Louise is retired from the Franklin-Monroe Schools.
The couple will mark the occasion with a private family celebration. Bill and Louise would enjoy receiving cards and hearing from
family and friends. Their address is 309 W. Franklin St., Pleasant Hill,
Ohio 45359.

Letter to the Editor

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the first responders that showed up quickly to the recent bus accident on St. Rt. 48
north of Covington on November 18.
As the bus driver, it was very comforting to see the massive
turnout of Covington firemen, squad members, police, Miami County
deputies, and volunteers that showed up in this time of need.
I would also like to thank Covington School Transportation Supervisor Ken Miller and School Superintendent Dave Larson for their
help at the accident. Thanks to Mike for bringing a spare bus to get
the students safely home.
To the students that were on the bus, your cooperation and calmness in such an emergency was outstanding!
We have all realized that reality hit home that day something we
thought would never happen here.
Thanks again to everyone who helped out.

We would like to thank the voters for supporting us in the November election for Newberry Township trustee. We are the smallest government group, consisting of four people meeting twice a month, to
govern Newberry Township.
We have two full-time employees that are responsible to us for
caring for approximately 29 miles of highway and nine cemeteries.
This time of the year we are concerned about our roads being open
for buses and other vehicles. We have a new truck on order in addition
to another truck and two pick-ups, all with V-blades, so we are well
equipped.
We bury in three of the cemeteries and must follow state laws and
insurance regulations in burials and maintaining the properties. Because of liability and safety issues, we are concerned with some of
the items being placed at graves and will have to address this in the
future. New signs will be erected explaining state and insurance regulations.

winter vacation camp for local

Dec. 23. The half-day camp is
scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to

During these sessions, participants will investigate Ohios
amazing wildlife. Enrollment is

Winter Solstice Concert Scheduled

At Brukner Nature Center December 19
The public is invited to celebrate the new season with wine, nature
and song in Brukner Nature Centers candlelit Heidelberg Auditorium
Thursday, Dec. 19, at 7:00 p.m.
The True Life Travelers (with Chris and Linda Tatarian of Rum
River Blend fame joining with Charlie and Mary Jo Leet) will perform
songs of the season. Bring your family and friends and enjoy homemade holiday goodies, a variety of seasonal drinks (including wassail),
and toe tapping, sing along fun. Meet a wildlife ambassador up close
and personal, take home a lovely poinsettia door prize and be the first
to view the nature centers annual photo contest submissions.

In the midst of the holiday season we oftentimes forget to step back
and enjoy the beauty of the season. Every night hike is like a gift from
nature. Will we hear the call of a great horned owl, discover the tracks
that lead us to a group of deer, or simply enjoy the silence of a falling

with the Pelletier family to help them bring their daughter
home, joined Glenn to discuss how Justina is doing and how
people can help the family fight for their daughter. Learn
more about Christys organization and how you can help.
The illness is called Mitochondrial Disease. After her first diagnosis, the doctor told the Pelletier family that their daughter
didnt have Mitochondrial Disease. Doctors have claimed the
teen is, in fact, suering a mental illness that manifests itself
into physical symptoms, known as Somatoform disorder.
After the parents objected and responded that their daughter
has been receiving treatment since childhood, the hospital
took custody. The family is allowed to visit for one hour per
week, and talk on the telephone for 20 minutes twice a week.

Irene Bruns Retires from VHCC

After 27 years working devotedly in the Laundry Dept. at Versailles Health Care Center, Irene Bruns
of Chickasaw recently retired. Bruns, 65, joined Versailles Health Care Center in 1985 as a part-time laundry aide. She commented that there have been a lot of changes over the years. When I started, there were
32 residents in a 50-bed facility. Now, after two expansions, we have 105 beds.
When asked about her time at Versailles Health Care Center, Irene said, My co-workers are friendly
and the people here really care. They helped me after my husband, Ed, died eight years ago. Everyone
gave excellent care to Ed while he was a resident. Irene and Ed had three children David, Susan, and
Joseph. She has one grandchild, Eli.
Mrs. Bruns, who enjoys reading, walking, and working on crossword puzzles, tearfully said, I am sad
to be leaving. but am excited to spend more time with my family.
A farewell carry-in luncheon was held by her co-workers at the health care center. As a special surprise,
three of Irenes siblings, Mary Jo Weitzel, Dolores Selhorst, and Joe Frey attended the party to help her
celebrate. Jean Unger, Director of Housekeeping and Laundry, said We will miss Irene and want to thank
her for all her years of dedication to the residents at Versailles Health Care Center. Congratulations, Irene!
