Its been a busy year for the Town of Strathmore, and though many have to see it to believe it, there is some growth coming to the town. At the end of November the total amount brought in for building permits in 2013 was at $20,687,653. The majority of that came from duplexes and semi-detached homes. Commercial building permits brought in just over $800,000, and residential was $15,668,897. Theres been some commercial, not much industrial, but we are looking forward to 2014. Developers are starting to prepare land, said Chief Administrative Ofcer for the Town of Strathmore Dwight Stanford. Were quite optimistic that the coming year is going to be quite good. Some of the numbers this year are down from the nal numbers in 2012. Residential this year was up a little, but commercial dropped by almost $2.3 million, industrial by almost $1.2 million and institutional by almost $12 million. We dont have much say over the institutional because that is mainly to do with the school boards. said Stanford. It was good last year, this year was quite a bit slower but some of it is getting ready for the coming year. On the east side of town, water and sewer pipes are being put in and houses are soon to follow. Stanford also said there are new subdivisions being discussed and that development for the new commercial area east of the Ranch Market has begun. A year from now I am optimistic that things will be much better, said Stanford. New houses and new businesses also means more tax base, which benets everyone in the community. The last census said there were 12,352 people in town; Stanford is sure that number will be above the 12,500 mark now. As a way to entice people to Strathmore, Town Administration and Council are currently working on creating a new brochure and have done advertising on Global TV to draw people in. Stanford said the town plans to focus even more on marketing into the coming year.

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Dale Many Guns has been teaching art classes for kids on Tuesdays and adults on Wednesdays out of her home for 13, years off and on. She began her art career when Candys Corner was still in town, being trained in the technique she now shares with her students. I teach them a technique called pen and ink and the oil rouging. Its a very simple technique, but you get a very nice effect from it, said Many Guns. Oil rouging is when you use a minimal amount of oil paint. There are two different types; there is wet on wet, which is when you slather on a lot of paint and move it around while it is wet. For rouging you use a transparent gel and very tiny amount of paint. You then rub it in a way that it moves the paint around with a dry brush. Each piece also needs to be sealed with a spray between each level to hold the look. Many Guns said she has worked on ceramic, canvas, wood, plates and even on a cream can. Its so easy, anyone can do it. I can bring a person that has never painted before, I can bring them in and teach them how to do it, said Many Guns. She currently has seven students in the kids class, which is for ages 8 and older, and four in her adult class. Both adult and kids classes are a $10 drop-in fee per night. The fee includes all of the supplies, canvas, oils and, of course, the instruction. Basically you show up and after two nights, sometimes three depending how much detail goes in the piece, you leave with your masterpiece, said Many Guns. Some of Many Guns students were happy to give a comment on their class. I have taken this class for years. They make good presents for holidays and birthdays, said Jonathon Van Verdegen. I love art because there is no right or wrong way. Its my style and the way I want it even though I am not good at it I still love it, said Julianna Amable. The rest of the students all agreed the class is fun and that they would like to see more classes. Finding new students is a challenge for any craft; Many Guns said there is only so much you can teach before they will branch off on their own. In January she is offering a class on how to draw fairies. Most of the younger students are excited and there are always adult options. The hardest part drawing is the face so if you can learn how to do the eyes and then how to put that nose and the mouth in, that is probably an advanced thing, said Many Guns. She doesnt think it will be an easy class to teach but said she is excited for the challenge. Many Guns is a Mary Owens certied instructor and all of the templates her students use are Mary Owens patterns. She said the students all have the choice of drawing the outline and having it placed on the canvas, or they can freehand the outline. Share your travels with the library

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Tis the season for holiday travel, and so the Strathmore Municipal Library has a new contest that ts the travel season. The library has three different book bags that they sell; they would like to see people travel with their bag and share where they went. The idea is you take a picture of yourself and your book bag, or even of just your book bag and share it with the library. Anyone can enter whether you go to somewhere tropical or not. We are not restricting this just strictly to y off destinations. The rules will be as long as your pictures are taken outside of Wheatland County or the Town of Strathmore, said Assistant Director of Library Services Carmen Erison. You can take a picture of you and your book bag, or your book bag and a monument somewhere fun. You submit those to the library and at the end of the six months on May 31 we will draw a winner. We thought what a great way to show off our book bags around the world. All pictures taken and submitted will be posted to Facebook. Entries will be judged by staff members at the library and evaluated based on creativity and originality. It would be difcult to pick a winner based on style and such on a picture because we dont want to limit people to nances and those types of things. One person might take a picture of their book on a tropical island, another might take their picture in front of the Saddledome in Calgary, said Erison. There are three prizes: rst place is a travel prize pack valued at $100 and will include one large item to be announced; the second prize will be a book prize pack valued at $30; and the third prize is a family library membership valued at $20. Bison billets honoured

The UFA Bisons triple-A midget team honoured their billets after posting a 5-0 win over the Knights of Columbus on Dec. 14 at the Strathmore Family Centre. This is the first year the Bisons are using billets as part of their program and took time after the game to say thanks. The Bisons are 16-6-2 heading into their final regular season game of 2013.

Dont drink, drive over the holidays

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter With the holiday season upon us many people are gathering for all kinds of Christmas functions, celebrating the season with food and drinks. Its a time of year when many may also decide to get behind the wheel of their vehicle, assuming that its okay if theyve only had a few drinks, or if they live close. On Dec. 7 2011 the Alberta government passed Bill 26, which gives the police more tools to get impaired drivers off of the road if they are over the 0.05 blood alcohol limit which is 50 milligrams per cent or 50mg of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood. The criminal legal limit is 0.08, which has been a standard for years and is where everything criminal would start. There is also a secondary part of that that says if youre impaired while operating a motor vehicle you can be charged with impaired operation. You do not have to be over 0.08 or 80mg per cent to be charged with impaired operation. Somebody theoretically could be impaired after one drink, said Cpl. Chris Hrynyk with the Strathmore RCMP. There are many factors that can lead to a persons blood alcohol level and so Hrynyk said it would be difcult to speak in specics and tell anyone what would be deemed a safe number of drinks for them to have. It can depend on body type, whether youre male or female, experience, food, and metabolism. In general our message that we like to get out there is, if you have been drinking have a secondary plan in order to get home, said Hrynyk. Plan ahead, especially in the Christmas season and the holiday season. Its one of the higher times of year where we see drinking and driving offenses come up, that along with the start of summer, we see it there as well. If someone does drink and drive, and they are pulled over the RCMP will look at many factors. If the person is not at the level of a criminal offense (0.08) based on observations and based on testing that could be done, but they have been arrested for impaired operation, then they may be subject to provincial legislation of 0.05. If the RCMP is able to form reasonable suspicion that somebody has consumed alcohol and driven a motor vehicle, the RCMP can demand a breath sample on an approved screening device formerly known as a roadside device, or commonly known in the public as a Breathalyzer. The breath sample is taken in the back of a police car or on scene and it may produce various different readings to

the RCMP. It may say the driver is under 0.05, or it may say they are in a warning stage which is over 0.05 but under the criminal mark (0.08), or it may indicate they are completely over the allowable limit to drive, said Hrynyk. Some people handle their alcohol better than others, weve all seen it or have that one friend that gets two drinks in and theyre done for the night. You would assume, if you were a person of higher tolerance, if tested your blood alcohol levels would read lower than the friend. Thats surprisingly not necessarily the case. Tolerance is different than your ability to handle alcohol, or than your legal limit, or blood alcohol level. Tolerance just means that your body deals with the effects of alcohol and knows how to compensate differently than somebody else, said Hrynyk. For example, if there are two people of roughly the same height and weight one may have had more experience than the other when it comes to alcohol, and because of that persons tolerance level may be higher. But when it comes to blood alcohol level, they could be very similar depending on body type, metabolism, what they have had to eat and drink, an other various different factors. Even gender plays a major factor because women and men will absorb alcohol differently based on water in their body, how much water percentage there is and based on fat tissue, said Hrynyk. Tolerance and level of alcohol in the body are two very different things, said Hrynyk. Even if you have higher tolerance it would still mean that if you were driving you would still be subject to the laws that are out there and potentially blow over and be charged. In general one standard drink probably will not put you over a limit on a law but it could mean youre impaired which does not carry with it a numerical value, said Hrynyk. For example, somebody cannot stay in their lane, they are depicting signs of being intoxicated or drunk then that would be enough to charge criminally, even after one drink. So how can you tell whats a safe level to drink at your Christmas party before getting behind the wheel? You cant, so it is best not to risk it. My suggestion to people is that if they think they shouldnt be driving at all, then they shouldnt be driving, said Hrynyk. If you dont know what will happen if you get pulled over in a check stop, then dont drive. Its not worth your license, your life, or someone elses life and its not worth putting your family through the heartache.

Dancing with the light

Strathmore High School held three performances of their Dance 25/35 Dancing With the Light from Dec 14-17 at 7 p.m. nightly. The students worked hard to pull off a magical fun night of dance and entertainment. The students explored different types of dancing such as POI and Tron. As always the students put in many hard hours of work practicing and designing their costumes. There were many behind the scene contributors as well, and a big thanks goes out to all involved.

We celebrate many birthdays in December. One that gets overlooked is Louis Pasteur, born on December 27 1822. He was a French bacteriologist who created a process for sterilizing milk to kill pathogens that could cause disease. He also developed a preventive inoculation against rabies. This early work on immunization has saved millions of lives throughout the generations. The human liver is a wonderful organ. It is the only organ that has acetaldehyde dehydrogenase, the enzyme that breaks down alcohol. It does this job well at the rate of one standard drink per hour. Just a reminder, a standard drink is 12 oz of beer, 5 oz of wine or 1.5 oz of spirits. Had your flu shot yet? Its not too late. Have your children inoculated too. Remember, you cant catch the flu from the flu shot. The more people who get the flu shot, the less the virus will be spread. Coconut water has gotten much publicity lately. It is made from the clear water inside the coconut, not the coconut flesh from which we get coconut milk. Coconut water does contain some potassium (about 200mg per 100ml), is low in sodium and calories and contains primarily water which keeps you hydrated. Cemetery upgrade rethink

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Contributor While reviewing draft budget gures for the coming year, Wheatland County council stopped to reconsider spending for the renovation of the Gleichen cemetery. A previous open house had been held in the community to outline a potential plan and give potential costs; however, the process was not yet nalized. The community was not in favour of major repairs, said Councillor Alice Booth. There is not one person that I have talked to that is in support of this. She said the community might support some levelling and stone repair and have new graves in the cemetery adapted to the suggested plan, but they would not support the great expenditure of funds proposed. She recognized that there were problems for the current maintenance managers and it was a lot of work to maintain. She had talked to the Lions club members, who said they would not go against the majority of the community members wishes in this matter. Some families were concerned, as they have spent a considerable amount of money keeping up their family burial sites and didnt want them damaged. There were also some families who were happy for the countys offer, as they didnt have the funds to repair their ancestors graves themselves. Chief Administrative Ofcer Alan Parkin cautioned council to consider that the standard set for Gleichen cemetery renovation may set a precedent for decision making in other cemetery improvement projects. There was a recent request for upgrade funding for the Rosebud cemetery. Councillor Brenda Knight said the amount of money spent on the cemetery in Gleichen would be better spent on water improvements, and suggested an independent company could be hired for under $5,000 to do maintenance and alleviate the burden from the current volunteers. This is a once in 100 year plan, easy to maintain and nice to visit, but $588,000 is a lot of money. I understand that some of that money is provided. I dont think we have all the facts yet to make a decision, said Councillor Rex Harwood. Jim Laslo, General Manager of Agriculture, Community and Protective Services commented on the time staff spent to develop the plan, but stated it could be revised and staff would be happy to proceed as council directed. He said that the Catholic Dioceses had not yet responded to their requested funding agreement. Along with the grant funding already in place, there were private donations for the new renovation and the affected donators would have to be contacted about any revisions. It is whatever you want, we are trying to meet your need. It was put forward by the previous councillor for the area. We took the design and applied it to the area, taking into consideration cost savings for the project. We presented it to the community and council, said Laslo, who considered modications would be requested before nal approval. Parkin said the county does have some liability issues and responsibility to meet certain government regulations, so he asked council if they could give staff direction on the plan, perhaps with a modied approach, so both the cemetery plan and the 2014 budget estimates could move forward. Reeve Glenn Koester said that he would like to see a partnership formed between the community and the county in regards to decisions for the cemetery. I suggest we try to get a community board formed in Gleichen. This would also give them some ownership in the project. If the county does this alone, it moves it to a different level, said Koester. Decisions on the plan and budget costs were deferred to a later council meeting.

The anvil and hammer part are still the same, but many blacksmiths these days have opted to use a propane forge. Because quality coal is tough to come by now I use a propane forge now. You dont have the mess and you also dont have to have storage for all the coal, said Craig Palmar owner of Old World Welding and Forge Ltd.

As we approach the holiday season, Strathmore RCMP advise drivers can expect to see increased ofcer presence on roadways for the Christmas/New Years Check Stop program. The RCMP plan to increase visibility, education and enforcement in an effort to reduce the number of injuries and deaths on our roadways. The December general meeting was cancelled due to the storm on Dec. 2. Projects within the Crowfoot Club have been busy. The Dog Agility started their year on Nov. 13 with a Demo on Dog Grooming with Cara at Prairie Paws Professional Dog Grooming. Then on Nov. 18 we had our tour of the Strathmore Vet Clinic, which everyone enjoyed. The photography project met on Nov. 22. They learned about their cameras and how to take black and white pictures versus coloured photography. Camera safety and what the different items in the menu are for were showed to the members. Finally they learned about taking pictures at different perspectives and how this can
change how a picture is perceived. They went outside and practiced this technique. On Dec. 13 at the Russells they had a guest speaker Crystal Stevens from Extra Twinkle Photography, she taught them how to use the rules of thirds in photography. They then went outside and took pictures of ornaments in the snow which Crystal then helped the members turn them into Christmas cards. Calgary 4-H Region hosted a 4-H event at the Hitmen hockey game Dec 7. The Crowfoot members that went had a great time watching the Hitmen win. The club went bowling in Drumheller at the Sandstone Lanes Dec. 13. Everyone had a great evening of bowling and eating pizza. Next meeting will be Jan. 6, 2014 Merry Christmas and all the best to everyone in 2014.

The ghosts of Christmases past

PAT FULE Fule for Thought If youve been a regular reader of my column Im grateful! You 58 people out of about 13,000 town residents and 10,000 County ones, have really made me feel like Im really in touch with my community! Since we are in another Christmas season, please indulge me as I reminisce about the good old days in Canmore. If you remember my crazy old Hungarian uncle and the still he hid at our house, then youll know that alcohol was sometimes a rich part of the Fules Christmases! I mean, nothing says Christmas to a 12 year old kid, like the merry sounds of a drunk uncle and your dad, singing sad Hungarian songs about the farm maids they left behind, and the hard times they faced! Yeah, it got a bit much at times, but heck, I even started to know the words! My parents were staunch, old country Catholics. Christmas at our house meant opening the gifts on Christmas Eve, and then going off to Midnight Mass. This is a tough thing to do for a young kid, whos wired up on the new gifts, the sweets, and the excitement! So many times my brother and I were forced to learn about the manger and the baby Jesus through groggy eyes, while we quietly longed for our new Christmas stuff! One Christmas, my parent bought us a new table top hockey game. It was what Gary and I had really wanted the Bobby Hull CCM Hockey set! It was the game that had players from the Leafs and Canadiens on rods that you controlled on an arena with a scoreboard, a goalie, and even a light that would go off if you scored! It was so 1970 hi-tech, it was amazing! The one thing my parents never knew until we were older, was that Gary and I had become masters at nding our gifts, opening them, playing with them a bit, and then by re-wrapping them! To us, the real Christmas surprise was nding the new hiding place, and then opening before Christmas! I think the high point of our espionage was this year of the hockey set. We always had our tree set up on the end of our couch, which was also my moms napping spot. One night, while she blissfully snored away, Gary and I (like ninjas) crawled under the tree, unwrapped one end, slipped the set out of the wrapping, opened the boxs end, and played a bit, all while Mom was in la-la land. It was genius, and when she nally did start to move a bit, we quickly put it all back just as we found it! What was tough, was faking surprise when we nally opened the hockey game! Gee, thanks Mom Dad!! A new hockey set? Wow, what a great surprise! Hah! Another Christmas surprise foiled by the Fule boys! Later, as a teen, Gary and I grudgingly went off to another Midnight Mass, this time on a Saturday night. I was settled if for the long hour and a half session, when what to my wondering eyes should appear, but my drunk friend, Dave! Dave was not Catholic, but had found out the Fules were in church. He came from a party, and in his drunken state, thought a visit with the Fules in church was a good idea! My mom was mortied, but also hid a smile, as Dave was one of her favorites of my pals. My dad shushed Dave and me, warning me that Dave was my responsibility! Now, if youve never been to a Catholic Mass, there are times (or there were) when you make different motions with your hand, at certain times of the service. Dave looked like a third base baseball coach! He tried to mimic what we were all doing, but he added a lot of other motions. There were the hands on both hips, the nods, he even had a brush-off signal! Now, I was mortied, because every signal he did was followed by his giggling! He mustve really liked the similarity between mass and baseball! I had to stop him, before my scary, mean priest noticed him! I quickly grabbed his hands, only to have him giggle even louder! I don wanna hold your hand, Pat sides were in church . your dad said we hafta behave! There was more laughter from Dave. It was no use, I had to end this, so I nodded at my parents and did what dad had done to me years earlier. Thats right, I hauled Dave out of there as fast as I could, but he was lucky he never got spanked! This was the same Dave who had thrown up on the girl at a high school dance while dancing with her! I had to carefully keep him at an arms length, while I pulled and shufed him two blocks to his house. Again, his dad thought I was a part of this how did I keep getting blamed for his kids drunken condition!? I told him his kid made a lousy Catholic and Dave giggled again, showing off his new signals! So, from the Fules, Brodie the Wonder-Dog, and Sonic the Hedgehog, Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year! The three grade groups at Crowther Memorial Junior High School battled against each to see who could bring in the most food donations for the Christmas Food Hamper Collection. Objects such as peanut butter were 10 points, whereas canned soup was 5 points. The Grade 8s finished first with 2,500 points, followed by the Grade 9s with 2,300 points, finishing with the Grade 7s in third with 2,000 points. We were heartened by Reeve Longs assurance that second reading was necessary to move the bylaw along for council discussions. It leads us to believe that by the third reading there could be a different outcome. Kneehill County CAO Al Hoggan said that third reading wasnt likely to be scheduled on the county agenda until spring. Our community opposition has only continued to grow stronger, evidenced by the large turnout at the second reading, when only a few hours earlier roads were still closed and back roads were blocked with snow. Were condent the developer now realizes the uphill battle they face to force this racetrack into an ocean of opposition. The developer continues to attempt to persuade us that our perceptions are incorrect and yet refuses to simply do the studies now, instead of later to prove otherwise (eg. EIA, TIA, Acoustical, Geotechnical, Comprehensive Site Plan, Sewer/Sanitary, Storm Water). On behalf of the Save the Rosebud group, we have offered to purchase the land from the developer and pay the bona de third party expenses to date. This offer demonstrates the resolve of this community to protect these lands. We feel the developer may take the offer, as the offer is more than the land is worth. They have many studies yet to do and maybe are pressured somewhat by another a racetrack being built in southern Alberta that may be further along in their development. Subsequent to the successful purchase of the land, we will pursue a mutual agreement among landowners, to protect the valley from the threat of intensive development in the future. I was very appreciative of the many constituents who braved cold weather temperatures to attend our Crowfoot Constituency Ofce Christmas Open House. As your Member of Parliament, I always look forward to coming home from Ottawa to share some holiday cheer with constituents at our Christmas Open House. As you know, our Conservative governments top priority is jobs, growth, and long-term prosperity. Our efforts include helping to sustain communities and families more effectively. One way that we do this is by encouraging Canadas charitable sector and those Canadians who give their time, effort, and money to their communities. Canadians have a long and proud tradition of helping those in need. This is often most evident during the holiday season, when our generosity is extended to the many organizations in local communities that help those who need it most. Canadas incentives for charitable donations have been described as among the most generous in the world. In Canada, registered charities are exempt from tax on their income and may issue ofcial donation receipts for gifts received. Donors can use those receipts to reduce their own income taxes by claiming the charitable donation tax credit. In 2012, federal tax assistance for charitable donations was more than $2.9 billion. Efforts to foster and promote a culture of giving contribute to sustaining a higher quality of life for hard-working Canadians. If you are thinking
of making a charitable donation for the rst time, our government is giving you an extra reason to donate generously. As part of Economic Action Plan 2013, our government introduced a new, temporary, rst-time donors super credit, to encourage Canadians to take that rst step to donate and support charitable endeavours in their communities. Monetary donations made by rst-time donors after March 20, 2013, and before Dec. 31, 2017, now qualify for the rst-time donors super credit. Individuals qualify as rst-time donors if neither they nor their spouse or common-law partner has claimed the charitable donation tax credit since 2007. SARAH WOLFs Standard 4-H Reporter The Standard 4-H Club held their Christmas party on Dec. 8 at Shakers Family Fun Centre. The club had lots of fun participating in many activities such as rock climbing, laser tag and video games. We had a quick meeting afterwards. We were notied that our cookie dough order had arrived and were ready for pickup. If you placed an order with a member and have not received it, please get in touch with the member you purchased it from so you can arrange a time for them to drop it off. Thank you to everyone who bought cookie dough from our club and made our fundraiser a success. We are trying to schedule Jan. 12 for a tour through the new Animal Care Centre in Strathmore. Rusty Spurs give back to the community

SARAH WOLFs Rusty Spurs Reporter The Strathmore Rusty Spurs 4-H Horse Club started their December meeting by going to WalMart to shop for the Strathmore Crisis Shelter. Our club picked up many great items to give to the families at the shelter so they can have a good Christmas too! We celebrated our successful shopping day with pizza afterwards! After we nished shopping we went back to the EnCana building to have our meeting. We got our tire count for our tire recycling fundraiser and we have collected a grand total of 2,744 tires. Thank you to everyone who donated to our club. Another year of successful tire collecting! Our club went over some ideas for our Christmas Party and we decided on laser tag. We will be holding our party at Laser Quest in Calgary. We will be doing a fun Christmas Secret Santa gift exchange and pizza as well. Our next meeting will be on Jan. 7. We will then have a record book and diary night on Jan. 21.

REMEMBErING OUr rOOTS ~Chas & Marguerite Watson

JOHN GODSMAN Times Contributor Chas grandfathers family owned a china shop in the Grass Market in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was intrigued by the CPR and Canadian Government advertising Western Canada as the land of milk and honey. Plans were made and he immigrated to the Namaka District on his own in 1911. His wife was booked to travel on the Titanic in 1912 with their four children, but one of them became ill, so their passage was delayed a couple of weeks. How fortuitous! Marguerites grandfather Hope, emigrated from England to Canada, and after working in Southern Alberta for a while, homesteaded in the Neutral Hills area in 1906. Margs brother Rick, who is third generation, now operates the ranch near Czar, Alta. Chas was born in Calgary in 1940, and attended Namaka School through Grade 8, then attended Samuel Crowther in Strathmore through Grade 12. Marguerite was born in Provost in 1943, and attended a one room schoolhouse called Good Luck through Grade 6. Her home was about a mile away, so she rode a horse to school each day. For Grades 7, 8, and 9 she attended school in Czar, then went to High School at Hughenden for Grades 10 & 11. They met while they were both attending Olds School of Agriculture, and were married in Provost in 1962. They started their married life, living in a small house on the west side of Namaka which was basically two granaries that had been pulled together. Daughter Cheryl joined the family in 1964, and son David in 1968. They now have seven grandchildren. They bought their farm in 1969 from Andy Thomson, and 44 years later still live there. Chas and Marguerite work together - swathing, haying, running the combine and looking after their cattle and horses. She says there are few things she wont do, like cleaning chickens! Marguerite says she loved gardening, and always had a large vegetable patch. In later years, she changed to growing lilies and other owers. She spent 12 years as a volunteer with the Prairie Rose Fashion Pageant sponsored by the Calgary Stampede, under the guidance of Opal Siefert. In 1978, she organized a group to research, compile and publish a history book on the Village of Namaka and District. She became the Managing Director, and the book Trails to Little Corner, was completed in time for Namakas Centennial celebrations in 1983. Chas had the pleasure of being part of The Rancheros for over 20 years, playing alongside the likes of Chuck Mercer, Ray Newell, Joe Bochek, and others. They played their Olde Tyme music for many weddings, New Years Eve celebrations and the famous New Years Night dances at Namaka Hall. Along with farming with his Dad Verdie, Chas was a grain buyer for National Grain Company and spent a few winters working at the Strathmore Seed Cleaning plant. Their community involvements include the Namaka Community Club, the Namaka Friendship Club, and Strathmore United Church. They served for many years on the Board of Directors for Rosebud School of Arts. Marguerite has served on the Old Sun College Board, worked with Home Care for six years, spent a season working at AVB Greenhouses, and was Assistant Program Director at WFCSS for a year. In 1998, she joined the RCMP Regional Victims Services Unit as a volunteer, a commitment that continues to this day. Marguerite and Chas serve as Class Agents, and Chas served as board member for the Olds College Alumni Association. He was also involved with Strathmore Rural Fireghters Association. The 1980s were tough times for farmers, so to bring in a few extra dollars, Chas became the Trade Show representative for Shurtight Mfg, a farmerowned operation from Czar, Alta. They both travelled the trade show circuit for 13 winters. During this time, Marguerite created Forget-Me-Nots which produced framed dried ower keepsakes, from wedding and funeral owers. The biggest change theyve seen in the area is the growth in the number of acreages. They commented there are more people and fewer farms. They both enjoy travelling, but do not like to be away from home for too long. They have been on a couple of cruises, and love attending antique shows. In the Fall of 2012, they celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Their closing comments were and so the world keeps turning, and we are left wondering where did all the time go? How did this happen? And, so fast!

200 marathons across Canada

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Jamie McDonald is doing the unthinkable to fundraise for childrens hospitals in Canada and in his home nation of the United Kingdom. McDonald dipped his hand in the Atlantic, left St. Johns, Newfoundland on March 9, with a goal of running across the country to Vancouver and raising $100,000. He passed through Strathmore on Dec. 18 on route during his 8,000 km journey. It is just me. Ive got absolutely no support crew. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube Im doing it. Im surviving off about ve hours of sleep a night, McDonald said. My foot is starting to misshape. It looks like permanent damage has taken place. Im just trying to show everyone in the world that anything is possible. McDonald has developed chronic tendonitis in the last two months from running roughly a marathon a day, but completes strength training and yoga to assist with his journey. He will become the rst person ever to run across the country, unassisted. Its about the equivalent of 200 marathons, he said. I didnt plan anything at the start, but what I did research was Terry Fox. I took a very similar route to him, mainly on the highway, but the highway does drive me a little bit insane from time to time. At age nine, McDonald was diagnosed with syringomyelia, and spent much time at childrens hospitals himself. The symptoms can be anything on any individual, but what I had as a kid were, sometimes I wouldnt be able to move my legs, immune deciency I was just really, really sick, he said. McDonald is in remission now, and says playing sports and keeping active helped with his recovery. Im really lucky that my symptoms disappeared, because if they would have continued, there was a very good chance I would lose my mobility or my life, he said. His plan is to donate to each province or areas children hospital that he runs through. So far, hes totaled $70,455. You Canadians know how to fundraise, McDonald said. I almost want the fundraising for this just to be the beginning, even if I make it, I still want the fundraising to carry on. McDonald runs with a 30 kg baby stroller, in which he keeps his food, tent, sleeping bag and tracker so everyone can follow along on his journey and even run beside him. Its pretty cool because now people can just nd me at any time, just to say hi or hand me a coffee, he said. What I like about this trip is that I came out here on a one-track mind to fundraise for childrens hospitals because thats what motivates me. Anyone can follow the journey, and enjoy it, and be inspired, and take what they want from it. Up until Winnipeg, McDonald was camping out on his own, but now stays with friendly people along the way. One Albertan even went so far as to volunteer a trailer for McDonald to sleep in on the side of the road. The Canadians are just unbelievable at helping somebody through hardship, McDonald said. McDonald is hoping that he completes his achievement by early January. I would say as soon as possible, really. My biggest fear is going over the Rocky Mountains, he said. Its quite a bit dangerous. Every day that goes by now is just going to get worse. The risk of me making it is going to slim. This isnt the rst record McDonald is attempting to crack. In 2012, he cycled roughly 22,500 km from Thailand to England. It was 25 different countries; I got caught in a big war zone on the Afghanistan border I got shot at. I also went through Iran and Iraq, where people were just so friendly, he said. Once he returned safely to England, McDonald broke the world record for most time spent consecutively on a stationary bike. I spent 268 hours non-stop. I ate, I drank on the bike, I even peed on the bike, he said. This event is special for McDonald however, as he plans to make a documentary of everything he has experienced across Canada. The people I meet along the way, the people that come out, theyre touched by what Im doing, McDonald said. I hope that this just creates a big wave of people trying to do good in the world. Strathmore native Stacey Schuett is taking donations for McDonald to go towards the Alberta Childrens Hospital in Calgary, by setting up a donation jar in her place of business, Noosa Beach. The donation will be made in memory Schuetts daughter Tatum, who died at the Alberta Childrens Hospital 11 years ago. Not even a month old, Tatum passed due to kidney failure. They were amazing the staff, its just an amazing place, Schuett said of the Alberta Childrens Hospital. As soon as the Childrens Hospital was involved, I was all over it. Schuett is also holding a rafe for a gift basket; valued at $1,000, its lled with a facial, gel nails, and a Noosa Beach gift certicate. The Bronzing Bar, Little Shop of Hairs, and the Strathmore Veterinary Clinic made donations to the basket as well. Because of her daughter, and the supportive staff at the Childrens Hospital, Schuett is strongly pushing for donations to Jamies cause. What hes doing is unreal. I can barely run up my stairs, let alone across the country. Its hard to believe that someone can do that, Schuett said. I just cant wrap my head around it. Manny Everett ~Times Contributor Over the last 30 days food, toys and essentials were collected in various drop-off locations in Strathmore and the surrounding communities for this years Christmas hampers, provided for those who need that little boost over the holidays. Christmas isnt an event for the privileged; it is something everyone should be able to participate regardless of status or nancial situation. There is no judgment when someone asks for a hamper or is sponsored by someone else for a hamper. Over 40 volunteers for the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society came together at the Ag. Society Livestock Pavilion on the weekend to ll the grocery list of items for individuals and families. Volunteers were given lists and quantities and went shopping for their respective anonymous family. By the afternoon on Dec. 14 over 200 hampers were lled, overowing with essentials and treats. Chair Dave Collins said, with 200 hampers and at least 200 items per hamper (that includes food and toys) that made for 40,000 items being distributed to local residents. Roughly a total of $600 for food and another $80 per child in toys for Christmas morning. While the amount of food was generous, it is meant to hold a family until February when they can apply for a new hamper. The group of volunteers worked like a well-oiled machine and even new comers quickly gured out the routine. Volunteer Gail said, it warms your heart and your sense of Christmas spirit goes up a number of notches, it just feels good to help. Distribution days were on Dec. 16 and 17. Inclement weather and Christmas falling on a Wednesday had the society scrambling a little, but in the end it worked out and they were able to ll all requested hampers. Tree of Hope continues giving after almost 20 years

Manny Everett ~Times Contributor Next year will mark the 20th year of the Tree of Hope Society in Strathmore. Donations of $10 are made in memory of loved ones that have passed away throughout the years or sending Christmas greetings to loved ones and at the same time helping a worthy cause. Any amount of a donation can be made and would be gladly accepted. For every donation a bulb is lit on the tree with the name of the donor and the recipient acknowledged. Treasurer of the Society, Mardelle Bazant said, last year we raised $3,000 for the Tree of Hope. Our campaign goes to the middle of January and donations can still be made for this years tree. Forms can be picked up at the Strathmore Hospital or found in the Strathmore Times newspaper. Rev. Bryan Beveridge from St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church led this years ceremony. He was newly installed as the Priest to serve in Strathmore earlier this fall. He led a lovely service and gave a Christmas devotional along with singing of some traditional Christmas hymns and carols. Pianist Irene Dougan, who volunteered her time for the event, accompanied him. Originally money raised by the Tree of Hope campaign was to purchase furnishings for the palliative care rooms at the hospital in Strathmore. Since its inception monies now go to purchasing specialized equipment such as wheelchairs, pain pumps and other necessities. The ornaments this year were made by the Adult Support Group in Strathmore, and were placed on the tree during their ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 12. Any further cheques and donations can be made out to the Strathmore District Health Foundation.

They were entertained by the Carseland School Grade 2 class with song and actions and this was followed by an afternoon of games, cards, shufeboard and lots of socializing. This was followed with the lively entertainment by Trixtan an illusionist. His performance was amazing and it was great to see the audience participation. Lord of All Lutheran Church Christmas dinner

Manny Everett ~Times Contributor Lord of All Lutheran Church in Strathmore will be offering a complete Christmas dinner with all the xings on Christmas Day at 4 p.m. This dinner is in its 10th year, with volunteers from the church as well as the community helping make the turkey supper. Pastor Dawn Nelson, along with the church community and council, says that, no one should be alone for Christmas. The meal is free and the invitation is open to anyone. This is our Christmas gift to others in the community, said Nelson. The largest dinner the church has served in the past saw between 85-90 adults and children. After supper, with a full and satised belly, the festivities continue on with carols and games. Really a true spirit of Christmas, Nelson recalls a young man who came to the supper a number of years ago as he was part of a road crew in the area. The young man came back to the kitchen with tears in his eyes and said now I can call my mom and tell her I was part of a real Christmas dinner. Thank you. So whether you have a loved one in the hospital and dont want to go home and cook, you are alone, or for whatever reason if you nd yourself wanting a bit of Christmas cheer, this supper is for you. Pastor Dawn encourages that you call ahead at (403) 934-2374 so the church has an idea about numbers. As it is said in the Gospel of Matthew 25:40 in Christs words, truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Finding a hobby that you love is always a great thing. Being able to make a buck or two back from it makes it even better. Dennis Groenhof has always had an interest in woodworking, stemming from his father who taught him the golden rule of measure twice, cut once. It wasnt until some time after Groenhof retired from the RCMP, and at the request of his sister, that he really began to explore his passion by making birdhouses. I started maybe about two years ago and I built some for family members and friends and I would give them away. Finally one of my friends says well why dont you try and sell a couple at the local markets? said Groenhof. Its a labour of love I guess, I enjoy doing it. I try and accommodate the places I go, or I try and build one or two for that area. He began with making old-fashioned Saloons, adding a special little touch to each with either a horse hitch, a spittoon or even little signs hanging out front. He said not everyone wants a Saloon so he began building houses with rewood shacks and original names. When I rst started building these I didnt really know much about birdhouses at all and I built them all, nailed them and glued them together. We had one on the fence and we watched the bird take the old nest out, throw it on the ground and then rebuild a new one, Im thinking oh maybe we should make them so we can clean them out for the birds, said Groenhof.

They are all very practical, I have done research and all these are an inchand-an-eighth hole and theyre for your chickadees and house wrens. There are specic sizes for various birds. Every house he builds now has part of the roof that comes off so that people can clean it out for the birds. None of his birdhouses have a perch. While researching he found that they are actually not recommended because a predator bird can sit there and wait for the baby to stick its head out and grab them. Groenhof even took it another step further; when he realized the houses could get quite hot he added vent holes and drainage holes to each home. He has been asked about painting the houses but said what you see is what you will get, otherwise it will quickly become a big business and he would like to maintain building the birdhouses as a hobby. I enjoy woodworking and now you cant do much outside so I come out here, the shop is heated so I can come out here at night time putt around and build a house or two. I usually throw on a CD and listen to some music and away I go, said Groenhof. I have done everything out of cedar...it weathers really well and you can leave it hanging outside for years and it will turn kind of grayish. Each home is made out of cedar fence board. He precuts many of the pieces and works on the houses in stages. He stamps his name and keeps track of each house he has made; to date there have been over 140 made. Looking for leaders

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Strathmore was selected as a lighthouse community earlier this year for the Becoming a Community Builder initiative. There are ve three-week competency based components to the program. The youth and adult programs are running parallel, and each Friday a live web session is held with Ian Hill, developer of the content and founder of the Let Them Be Kids Foundation. Those involved in Becoming a Community Builder are able to join likeminded people at one of the gathering locations, or you can go on demand and watch that weeks session when you have time, even if it is in just 15 minutes intervals. In todays day and age people want to learn what they want to learn when they want to learn it and this learning platform that weve created does just that. It gives them the exibility of a face-to-face interaction or on demand participation, said Hill in an intro video. Some of the locations that show the weekly session are the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce, Rockyview Library, Strathmore Municipal Library when the meeting room is available, and Bow Bench Retreat. What we really want is to generate that conversation between grass roots community members who are all seeking the same thing and thats to build some leadership skills for themselves. Ultimately its so that they can contribute to the community whether its through being a better employee or being a better leader, said Teri McKinnon, chair of the steering committee. One challenge she said they are having is getting people to stay engaged and active participants. It can come across as a lot of work but really its not, said McKinnon; everything is available on demand three hours after a session airs and if you only have a few minutes a day to work on it then thats all you need. Te Becoming a Community Builder initiative will wrap up at the end of January. Hill will return to Strathmore then and meet with everyone who has completed the program. Were hoping that we can get through this last session and then start January fresh with the last two competencies and then have a big celebration in February, said McKinnon. The initiative will undergo a full evaluation with the University of Alberta. The results will then be used to guide other communities. Thats another thing thats exciting is one; we will be evaluated and criticized and have solid data on how it worked in this community, said McKinnon. Two, we will be able to compare ourselves to other communities across Alberta to see what successes and barriers they had. Three, as a lighthouse community we own that web portal forever and so if we have changing leadership or another youth group or another business who wants to use it as a staff development tool it is available to them. There are currently 150 participants with some trickling in each week. Anyone interested can still join, but to be involved in the wrap-up celebrations you must complete all ve competencies with everyone else. All you need to join up is a username and password. ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Strathmore High School hosted their annual Christmas Classic girls basketball tournament from Dec. 13-14, eventually beating out Chestermere High School in the nal, 53-31. We certainly played complete for this time of the season in our tournament, said Strathmore girls coach Dion Galandy. We rolled over everybody. The girls dominated George McDougall in an afternoon match on Dec. 13, and defeated Notre Dame High School on Dec. 14 to meet up with Chestermere in the nals. They played well on the weekend, for sure, Galandy said. We were playing our game, just a fast-paced sort of pressure defense. We generate a lot of offence by our defense. The Strathmore High School Spartan girls are 1-1 on the season so far, having lost their league season opener to the Holy Trinity Academy Knights at home on Dec. 12, 54-52. That was our rst game with everybody back, Galandy said. I dont think we were on the same page. Just kind of a mental breakdown there at the end. On Dec. 16, the girls defeated Oilelds High School 5330 at home. When we start the season, we work on fundamentals and hopefully by the time the season comes to a close, well be able to go through and perfect our team play, Galandy said. The girls have one more game prior to the Christmas break, away at Highwood High School on Dec. 18 (result not available as of press time).
After losing to Holy Trinity Academy on Dec. 11 by a score of 78-40, the Spartans stormed back against Oilfield High School on Dec. 16, winning narrowly 55-51. The boys have their next game in the new year against Foothills Composite High School on Jan. 8.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Coach Ken Smith and the Strathmore High School (SHS) boys basketball team had their home opener on Dec. 11 against Holy Trinity Academy (HTA). A young squad, the SHS Spartans still have to perfect their game; they dropped to the HTA Knights 78-40. Were a young team, a lot of Grade 10s playing. Theyre still learning, Smith said. What contributed to the loss was turning the ball over, thirty plus times. Youve got to take care of the ball. You cant win basketball games by turning the ball over that much. Smiths goal as a team is to use their athleticism and size to be competitive against teams such as HTA. Gaining awareness on the court

should help as well, with time. We just have to be in proper position. They werent blocking out. We need to take care of the ball coming up the oor making good passes, and just good choices, Smith said. Having young guys, its the rst time theyre playing, coming up from junior high and playing guys that big. The varsity boys worked on defense and taking care of the ball during practices, prior to their tournament in Lethbridge Dec. 14-15. Well also be working on executing our plays we didnt execute. When we did, we had good looks at the basket and opportunities that was only a few times from there, thats what weve got to focus on, Smith said. SHSs faced the Oilelds High School on Dec. 16, winning 55-51.

The Wheatland peewee Braves lost to the Lethbridge Hurricanes Red at home on Dec. 15, by a score of 5-3. The Braves are now 8-10-2 on the season, and have their next contest in Hussar against Red Deer on Dec. 20.
Braves learn valuable lesson

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter After the Lethbridge Hurricanes Red took a 3-0 lead on Dec. 15 in Strathmore, the AA Wheatland peewee Braves tied it up with goals by Tarun Fizer, Kyle Crnkovic, and Eric Sandum. However, near the end of the second, Lethbridge scored on the powerplay and never looked back. The Braves lost 5-3, and are now 8-10-2. I could tell from the rst shift that we werent ready to do our best. We had a poor effort all day, Keith Klemmensen coach of the Braves said. When we tied it up 3-3, I told the boys on the bench, be careful because were not earning this. We got a couple breaks from the ofciating. The referees allowed the Braves rst goal, though it looked as though the Lethbridge goaltender had covered the puck. Lethbridge also had some of their goals disallowed. The score really attered us, theres no way we were 5-3 with them. Again, our goaltender had to do too much of the work, Klemmensen said. Wheatlands goalie Ethan Rycroft stopped 38 of 43 shots. The Braves only managed to get 23 on net. It went from bad to worse. We just didnt have a good effort all day; defensemen were making very poor choices with the puck, and we werent moving our feet, Klemmensen said. At the end of the day, they have to decide to

come to work and compete 100 per cent. Until they do that, theres really not a whole bunch that anybodys going to be able to tell them. They might have tuned me out. The Braves have their next game in Hussar against Red Deer on Dec. 20 WARRIORS KEEP ROLLING The bantam Warriors defeated the Taber Golden Suns on Dec. 14 by a score of 5-2, with both of Tabers goals coming on the man advantage. Wacy Sandum and Ryan Bell had two points each; Chayse Hnatowich had two goals and an assist. The Warriors are leading the bantam league standings with a 19-1 record. Their success comes from having 124 goals for, but only 37 goals against. They play the Okotoks Oilers in Strathmore on Dec. 20. CHIEFS SPLIT The midget Wheatland Chiefs won 4-3 in Sylvan Lake on Dec. 13, by putting 40 shots on net. Cody Willis and Coltyn Herman scored two points each, and now have 33 and 32 respectively for the year. Two days later, the Chiefs dropped 8-3 to CRAA Gold at home. Each of the Chiefs goals (scored by Herman, Blair Roszell, and Jayse Wilson) were scored on the powerplay. Willis and Cody Lassiter had two assists each. Their next game is Dec. 21 versus the NWCAA Stamps.

GET RID OF THE BABY! Heres my challenge to you this Christmas. Get rid of the baby Jesus. The little plastic one in your nativity set. Throw him in the garbage or if that seems too harsh put him back in the box. When you set up your nativity scene dont include the baby Jesus. Why would I say that? Dont you think its kind of weird that when we celebrate Jesus birthday, we always think of him in the manger? We celebrate the empty tomb at Easter, why not the empty manger at Christmas? When you celebrate your birthday do you always pull out the pictures of you in your crib? Happy 4th birthday! And you have a picture of you in your crib. Happy 16th birthday! And you have a picture of you in your crib on the Dairy Queen cake. Happy 24th birthday! By now you might have a baby of your own. Do you put a picture of you in your crib on display at your Birthday party with your friends? Do you pull out a picture of you in your crib at your 65th birthday? I know, there is something really neat about that nativity scene we put up every year. Even the parts that arent really in the story but hey its tradition! But my concern is that we forget that that baby grew up. He was the one who was crucied, and rose from the dead. He is the one who ascended into heaven. He is the one who said he was going to prepare a place for those who love him. He is preparing heaven right now! Soif your baby Jesus is getting in the way of you remembering the grown up, risen, ascended Savior Jesus then maybe you need to get rid of the baby Jesus and really get to know Jesus. ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Roughly 100 Grade 6 students took part in Wheatland Elementarys annual volleyball tournament on Dec. 11. Two teams from Carseland School, three teams from Westmount Elementary, three teams from Brentwood Elementary and four teams from Wheatland competed for rst place. We did hand out medals at the end too, just like every year, teacher Mike Smith said. It was pretty crazy. Carselands Team 1 took home the gold, followed by Wheatland Yellow being awarded silver, and Wheatland Green earning bronze. Carseland usually nishes somewhere in the medals, I dont know if they have something in the

water down there, Smith said. Its very competitive. The teams are very even. Its nail-biting, the games are close. The kids just have a blast. Michelle Rushford, vice principal at Wheatland, organizes the tournament each year with the help of her staff. It prepares them for when they start to get into junior high game, Smith said. All kids make the teams, but come Grade 7, they may have to deal with the pressure of making cuts for not just volleyball teams, but all athletics. Here, you dont have a cut you have to make, if we show up with that many kids, thats how many teams were going to make, Smith said. Its a short season, we only practice for a month or two, and then we have this big tournament. It just gives them a little bit of a taste for that junior high competition, with the parents watching and all the noise.

VIP Connections inspires

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The UFA Bisons, with the help of Michelle Bishop, hosted a VIP event for children with special needs during their game against the Calgary Northstars on Dec. 13. Roughly 10-15 children took part in the occasion, all sitting behind the Bisons bench in specially roped off section. They sat with the Rockyview Raiders if they wanted to. Some sat with their parents. I think everybody had a good time, everybody won a prize, Bishop said. I had more prizes than kids, so I hope everybody went home with a prize. Some of the prizes were assorted gift baskets, stuffed animals and Calgary Flames memorabilia. I think the parents were grateful that an event like this was planned, Bishop said. Other hockey moms assisted, as did eight students from Strathmore High School. They were awesome volunteers, Bishop said. I was happy with the overall outcome. With Joshua Bishop out with a concussion, Mackenzie Bauer sidelined with a sports hernia and Clay Murray nursing a broken foot, some Bisons assisted with the kids as well. Continued on Page 29

It is with sadness that the family of Dean Upshaw announce his passing on December 15, 2013. Dean is survived by his wife, Bev Upshaw; children Shannon Collens, Kerry Noble, and Chris Noble; grandchildren Morgan Collens, Madison Collens, Mark Zanewick, Brittany Noble, Matthew Noble, Bobby (Lesley) Upshaw, and Samantha Upshaw; great-grandchildren Kelsey Upshaw and Hayden Upshaw; and sister Bonnie Young. Bisons lead AMHL

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The UFA Bisons added two more wins to their record, with victories over the Calgary Northstars on Dec. 13 by a score of 3-1, and the Knights of Columbus Pats on Dec. 14, 5-0. The Bisons are now not only ahead of the Calgary Royals in the Chrysler Division, but are also tops in the league with 34 points. We found real good ways to win. Were becoming very condent in what we do, and a lot of it has to do with the way our goaltending has been, said Bisons head coach Dan MacDonald. When the goaltenders give you that condence, you can take more chances and you can be more creative. Theyre allowing us to be successful. Carter Seminuk made 23 saves against the Northstars and 22 saves against the Pats; hes also now rst in the league with a .934 save percentage and 1.83 goals against average. Its just been outstanding. What he does, is he gives condence to everyone, MacDonald said. Our defense can take all kinds of risks, and its not a concern. Especially at this level, taking risks is how you learn. Hes really helped those guys out by playing so strong. In the Northstars matchup, Mason McCarty had an assist and a powerplay goal that proved to be the game winner. With Connor Boyd following close behind with 24 points, McCarty has 30 points in 22 games, placing him third in league scoring. The Bisons had played the Northstars earlier in the year, winning 4-1 on Oct. 30. They just play a different kind of game. We have to adjust to their different style of play, MacDonald said. I think we were doing really good and sometimes we fall off and get involved in tactics that we have to walk away from. Theyre not as good as we are. They try to slow you down by hooking you, and grabbing at you. I think we retaliated a few more times than we should have. The next night against the Knights of Columbus Pats, the Bisons had three powerplay goals, and one shorthanded. Zachary Giroux added a goal and an assist, as did McCarty (including another game winner). Hes such a competitive guy, MacDonald said of McCarty. He wants to win. Its not uncommon for him to get the winning goal or set the stage for the winning goal. He plays harder as you need him more. Hes a pretty valuable player to us. Team captain Mackenzie Bauer is in the fourth week of his six week recovery process for a sports hernia, and may rejoin the team in a couple weeks. Maybe he can play at the Macs Tournament, but maybe not, MacDonald said. If he doesnt play there, hell start full time with us in January. Clay Murray is still sidelined with a broken foot, though Joshua Bishop is expected to return to the lineup next week after suffering a concussion. The Bisons next game is against the Calgary Flames (of the AMHL) on Dec. 21.

Continued from Page 28 The Bisons thought it was great, to have the crowd there to cheer them on. They had quite a few players out injured, so they were out in the crowd presenting kids with prizes. They managed to pull off a win still, so that was good too, Bishop said. Santa even made a brief appearance to help out with the VIP event. He was in high demand, so he had to make a quick getaway. He was there to give out candy bags, Bishop said. Bishop plans on doing another event for children with special needs in February perhaps a Valentines Day dance. The rst event was with the hockey boys, but Im hoping to call it Community Connections and just have other community members and students volunteers help me with the next event, Bishop said. A big thank-you to BKW Apparel, the Rockyview Raiders, and the UFA Bisons; your time and gift basket donations were appreciated.
