Powerful, Life-Saving Connections

Seton Williamson nurse saves brother-in-law
Its not often that a nurse gets the chance to save a family member, but thats exactly what happened one fateful summer day when Seton Williamson nurse Fred Bazaldua received word that his brotherin-law Dan was having a heart attack. En route to Seton Medical Center Williamsons Emergency Department, Dan went into cardiac arrest twice and was shocked by EMS staff. Within minutes of arriving in the ED, Dan went into cardiac arrest a third time and was debrillated by ED staff. When Dan went into arrest a fourth time, it was Fred who shocked him back to life again. Read more on page 2

Dan was then rushed to the cardiac cath lab where Dr. Michael Lenis, an interventional cardiologist at Seton Williamson, inserted a stent in one of his coronary arteries. After a short stay in the intensive care unit and the telemetry unit, Dan was released and participated in cardiac rehab for several weeks. He then, gratefully, returned to his job as a coach and English teacher at Pugerville High School. When the ambulance doors opened and Fred was standing there ready to receive and treat me, I knew I was going to be OK, Dan explained. Avery Takes Heart Healthy Test
Every Monday morning for the past 10 years or so, Charles Avery and his wife Beth, both engage in a little healthy competition. They each take a turn stepping on the scale. My wife takes great care of herself and has motivated me to pay more attention to my health, said Avery. So when she suggested that we both go for a Heart Healthy CT at Seton Williamson, I said yes maam, he added with a chuckle. Seton Williamson offers Heart Healthy CT scans for only $99. The test, performed with a CT (computed tomography) scanner, is Dr. Michael Lenis and Charles Avery quick and painless. It gives you a calcium score, which is a measure used to estimate the amount of cholesterol plaque in your arteriesan indicator for coronary artery disease. This is one of the few tests in life where you want to make a zero, said Dr. Michael Lenis, interventional cardiologist at Seton Williamson. My wife, who watches what she eats and exercises every day, had better scores than I did, said Avery. My results showed I had some plaque build-up in my arteries, and I went back for further testing at Seton Williamson. Dr. Lenis reviewed all of the test results with Avery and made recommendations on how he could improve his heart health, including diet and exercise. Avery will follow up with Lenis next year to monitor how his new behavior improves his health. The great value of this heart scan is that it showed me whats happening on the inside thats something you cant see by stepping on a scale. This was the wake-up call I needed!

Whats Next for Seton Williamson?

Seeing the future with Brian Lidiak
Brian Lidiak, Seton Medical Center Williamsons new chief operating ofcer, is a young executive whos focused squarely on the future but not just his future, or that of his wife Joni and their three boys, Evan, Graham and Keiton. A big part of Brians and Seton Williamsons future is seniors. Setons mission directs us to pay special attention to patients who are considered vulnerable, Brian said. And while many seniors have very active lifestyles and social calendars, they are still dened medically as a vulnerable population. To address seniors needs, we are creating 65 & Strong, an advanced program for seniors with traumatic injuries thats focused on residents of northern Williamson County where the retiree demographic is much higher, he explained. Part of that involves care for patients who have suffered serious falls. We perform an assessment on why these patients fell. What is their home situation? What medications are they taking? So were not just treating a broken hip, but trying to prevent it from happening again. He believes Seton Williamson has a bright future and will see more growth from northeast Williamson County. In his new role, Brian has been impressed by the Brian Lidiak on a family vacation with wife Joni and sons Keiton, Graham and Evan close ties and sense of family among staff, nurses and doctors. He describes a different warm feeling when youre at Seton Williamson. I think the biggest strength is that we are a faith-based hospital, he said. When youre here, you feel a compassion that you wouldnt really feel elsewhere. I speak from experience having worked for other health care systems. When people are more at peace, when their clinical, as well as spiritual and emotional needs are met, they tend to have better outcomes.
