THE INFLUENCE INDUSTRY: ADVOCATES AT ODDS OVER HOW TO TIGHTEN CAMPAIGN FINANCE RULES
DEC 19, 2012
A new coalition, including former Federal Election Commission Chairman Trevor Potter, Republican lobbyistturned-convicted felon Jack Abramoff, Theodore Roosevelt IV, and representatives of both Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party have launched a campaign to push Congress to overhaul campaign finance laws. The twist? The group, Represent.us, first plans to get 1 million signatures endorsing the proposals, and then plans to wage campaigns against incumbents in 2014 who dont sign onto the legislation. Our hope is Congress will heed the call to action, said Josh Silver, campaign director, on a conference call with
reporters today. But if they dont, we have plans for that too. The campaign will actively work to unseat members from both major parties. The legislation, the American Anti-Corruption Act, would prevent lawmakers from accepting donations from lobbyists and special interests whose issues are before their committees or subcommittees; limit donations to superPACs; require former lawmakers to wait five years before becoming lobbyists; mandate full disclosure of all donations to any group spending at least $10,000 on political ads; and offering $100 tax rebates to small-dollar donors.
Congressman Jim Himes has drawn the ire of a budding American anti-corruption movement. Not because he broke any laws, but for something astonishingly legal: he let lobbyists for his top donor, CitiGroup, write their own Wall Street-friendly bill, and led it to passage in the U.S. House over the last month.
After record spending on the 2012 election, many advocates for tighter regulation of money in politics are agitating for a big overhaul of campaign finance rules. They just cant seem to agree on what that overhaul should include.
The Republican Party once a proud bastion of civic and business leaders who battled Southern racism, Northern corruption and the evils of big government has for the past several decades been itself the victim of political protection rackets. These rackets are orchestrated by fringe groups with extremist views on social issues, which Republican politicians are forced to support
Heres something you dont see every day: a stripping politician. No, its not Anthony Weiner. Its an ad for Represent. us, a new organization created late last year to fight the influence of money in politics. Josh Silver, the founder, is betting that a provocative ad can help him create a grassroots movement to pressure policymakers to enact sweeping reforms
There wasnt much to see in the State Senate on Wednesday: the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, the honoring of a basketball player and a bunch of empty seats where elected representatives are paid to sit. But there was something to grab the eye. Shortly after the beginning of proceedings, about 15 protesters who had posed as guests sitting in the upstairs gallery suddenly tossed hundreds of fake $100 bills onto the chambers floor below, a prank meant to call attention to the issue of campaign finance reform. The protesters made it through a couple of rounds of chants What do we want? Fair elections! before being asked to leave by the chambers security guards.
Outside, one demonstrator, Josh Silver, said the protest was intended to show that the states people wanted commonsense reform to clean up New York. The point is to tell Albany that the world is watching, Mr. Silver said. And sure enough, on the Senate floor, several amused senators took photos of the activists and scooped up the funny money. Senator John A. DeFrancisco, a Republican from the Syracuse area, even thanked the protesters for spicing up another ho-hum day of lawmaking in front an otherwise sparse audience.

WHY A DEMOCR ATIC TEA PART Y IS THE BEST HOPE FOR FIXING CORRUPT GOVERNMENT
DEC 6, 2012
A proposal to drastically overhaul campaign finance, lobbying, and disclosure laws was announced Nov. 13 by a group that includes a leading Republican election lawyer and a former top ethics official in the George W. Bush administration.
And just last month, Represent.US launched the American Anti-Corruption Act, crafted by Stephen Colberts super PAC lawyer, Trevor Potter. If passed, the act would be the most ambitious political-reform proposal in a century.

The 2012 election wrapped up barely a week ago, which means that fundraising for the 2014 midterm election has begun in earnest. But a new campaign to get money out of politics has just launched as well. Represent.Us says its goal is to pass the American Anti-Corruption Act

K STREET FILES: HEY, IS THAT JACK ABR AMOFF DRESSED AS A $100 BILL?
FEB 27, 2013
At the height of D.C.s spring tourist season, visitors may very well witness something bizarre: A flock of activists dressed as $100 bills running from K Street to Capitol Hill. The Stop Lobbyist Bribery K Street 5K run and walk on Saturday, April 13, is a publicity-advocacy stunt by the group Represent.Us and its parent organization United Republic, which has enlisted ex-lobbyist and convicted felon Jack Abramoff in its cause.
If you cant beat the money, be the money. In the face of a looming Supreme Court decision that could remove limits on political contributions, and radio silence from leaders of both major parties on anti-corruption reforms, a group of activists have plans to reinvigorate a movement.
