Enhanced performance Current market demands and today's technology have allowed Outotec and its partner of the seminal design, combustion technology leader SAACKE, to make enhancements which increase the performance and expand the burners general capabilities. The targeted increase in capacity was achieved through a 40% boost of the nominal sulfur burning capacity reaching 35 mtph of sulfur burned by a single unit. Operators familiar with the previous Luro-burner version will quickly notice that a flange motor is now in place with a magnetic coupling to the burner shaft thus superseding the old V-belt design. Furthermore, an automatic lubrication system has replaced the old oil system along with related maintenance. These changes come together with the LUROs classic features such as excellent sulfur distribution and atomization, turndown flexibility, a small combustion chamber and low sulfur feed pressure. In addition to this, online load changes mean that there is no downtime for nozzle replacement.

Optimal operation Due to its exceptional atomization of sulfur, the burner optimizes furnace size and limits the effects from thermal shocking. With its high performance in the partial-load operational range the burner requires no mechanical adjustments such as a nozzle replacement when the plant is operating at lower loads. In addition, there is no steam heating of burner sections inside the combustion chamber. The total package The LURO2 is more than a burner; it is a total system which allows for atomizing liquid sulfur. It is based on a spinning cup developed by SAACKE, and has been utilized in every sulfuric acid plant designed over the last several decades. At virtually furnace pressure, sulfur passes into an open cup rotating up to 4,800 rpm. The sulfur film on the internal surface is dispersed from the edge by centrifugal force and is further atomized by the introduction of primary air" with only low overpressure to furnace level. This air flow emerges at high velocity through a narrow annular gap located between the rotating cup and the atomizer hood. Next, secondary air enters the furnace through the annular gap surrounding the burner. The resulting spiral path of gases through the furnace not only effectively keeps the flame central, but it also prevents non-vaporized sulfur droplets from coming into contact with the furnace wall.

The difference is in the cup An important benefit of the spinning cup burner is that the sulfur through-put can be varied continuously from the maximum capacity via the rated capacity of 100% down to approximately 15% with no significant change to the atomizing intensity. It also requires no equipment changes. The key is the new frequency controlled rotary cup which ensures the precise control of sulfur film thickness inside the cup. The effective atomization process secures swift and safe sulfur combustion thus allowing very small furnace volumes. The amount of sulfur to be processed in the furnace is controlled by a flow control valve. The LURO2 can also be used during start-up processes when the sulfur furnace and converter are heated with diesel fuel. The oil atomization during start-up is also achieved using air and the rotating cup technology, no additional equipment is needed. Small droplets formed with the cup technology allow fast evaporation and short residence time. In addition, film thickness remains constant and homogenous over a lifetime. From a financial standpoint, the small furnace means lower long-term investment. Other benefits include: nn Prevention of sulfur carry over from furnace nn Reduction of NOx formation nn Absence of steam leakage into the furnace and downstream equipment nn Atomization by centrifugal force and air nn Formation of ultra-fine droplets regardless of plant load nn Uniform heat distribution nn No changes in burner configuration throughout whole operation window nn Cost savings in case of furnace replacements Upgrading to a LURO2 solution With its new LURO2 design, Outotec has also addressed the maintenance needs for a sulfur burning system. The use of a direct drive for the LURO2 further eliminates a major wear part and supports the customers target setting for operation with service intervals of two years and more. Typically sulfur burning furnaces need a replacement after some 20 years in operation. The LURO2 enables a compact furnace design without wearing internals such as baffle plates. Therefore furnace costs can be reduced remarkably. With the LURO2 solution Outotec provides a state-of-the-art replacement sulfur burning system for your plant.
