KRYSTAL TOMASSO/The Sun
Thomas and Rosemary Larson were crowned the winners of Delrans Holiday House Competition. It takes five days for the decorations
to be propped up and positioned to create the perfect outdoor holiday dcor. Of all the pieces that grace the winter wonderland, the
Larsons favorites are the little sign in front of Scooby that is hand-made and a holiday greeting from the family. According to the Lar-
sons, the other piece that is a favorite is their little penguin who counts down until Christmas. They said children always come by and
take a count from their lawn.

By KRYSTAL TOMASSO
The Sun
The rain trickled, the floods
came and the Riverside Park com-
munity by the Delaware River
was saturated. The pipe for storm
water off Stewart Avenue drains
water into the Delaware River. It
is supposed to, at least. However,
according to Council President
Gary Catrambone, this has not
been the case for years. The pipe
is broken, the bank is eroded and
the flap valve is broken. It is caus-
ing damage to many of the homes
in the community by the bank.
The pipe broke 25 years ago.
The flap valve was open, making
it a water super-highway,
Catrambone said. The issue is
we need to replace that pipe and
the valve and support the pipe.
The plan is to replace the end
of the pipe and install a new flap
valve.
The contractor will be repair-
ing the beam to the way it was in
order to support the pipe. We are

DELRAN HIGH SCHOOL WINTER SPORTS PREVIEW
By NICK COHEN
The Sun
For the first time in 38 years, the Delran
High School wrestling team will have a new
voice as Nathan Marter takes over for South
Jersey legend Dennis Smith who retired at the
end of last season.
Smith is the winningest wrestling coach in
South Jersey history, with a record of 605-196-
5. The Bears list of accomplishments under
Smith is lengthy. Delran won 25 league cham-
pionships, 10 district team titles, a pair of sec-
tional championships and 26 holiday tourna-
ments. The Wall of Fame in Delrans
wrestling room lists 73 district champs and 24
regional champions to go along with those
state accolades.
Its time, Smith said. Because Im not in
the building. Im a retired teacher. And I really
believe, especially for wrestling, that you need
to be in the building. So that became a factor. I
cant move like I used to, and wrestling is the
kind of sport where you really want to demon-
strate, get on the mat and show moves. That
was my specialty. I used to love doing that.
During Smiths first 37 years, Delran had
only one losing season. And that came in the
first year when the Bears were 1-16. On an in-
dividual basis, Smith has coached a pair of
two-time state champions in Brett Matter and

Bill Duff. Smiths 1992 team had
six regional finalists and sent
seven to states.
Smith was a wrestler in
his own right, as he became the
first Burlington County wrestler
to capture a state crown when
he was a senior at Lenape
High School in 1968. He will not
completely ride off into the sun-
set, as he will serve as an
assistant on Marters staff this
season.
The timing was good, because
of the 600 career victories, I was
able to reach last winter. It was a
good swan song. And we have
somebody in the program whos
just ready to go, Smith said.
Nathan Marters going to be an
excellent coach. So the timing
was perfect. But I still love
wrestling so much that I just said,
Lets switch.
Now that he is not the head
coach, Smith has allowed himself
to look back and reflect.
Its been a great ride, Smith
said. I never expected to do
something like this, but the years
and the wins just kept piling up.
Its kind of funny, but instead of
remembering all the wins, you re-
member the losses more.
There havent been too many of
those for a coach who has been
able to accomplish so many large
things for a smaller school like
Delran.

H
ow many times have you seen
it: People driving around town
throwing caution to the wind,
as if they were on a NASCAR track?
Youd think someone was giving away
free hundred dollar bills.
Do they not know we have children
walking around town? Do they not
care about the safety of other mo-
torists? Do they not care about their
own safety?
Seems like today, everyone is in a
rush at all times; it seems like its get-
ting worse with each passing year.
Somehow, by some miracle, New Jer-
sey drivers arent the worst in the na-
tion, at least according to an annual
study recently released by CarInsur-
anceComparison.com. In fact, were
only the 32nd worst state-full of driv-
ers. If were only middle of the pack,
wed hate to be on the road in
Louisiana, whose drivers were collec-
tively ranked as the worst in the na-
tion.
Even though were not as bad as
some of our American brethren, its
worth repeating: Slow down out there!
Nothing can be of such importance
that you need to speed and drive errati-
cally...every time you drive! Its just not
possible that your wife is giving birth
for the fifth time this week.
Our children are walking our
streets. Our elderly are still behind the
wheel. And our ready, willing and able
are out on the roads, trying to get to or
from a New Years celebration.
Lets make sure everyone gets where
theyre going safely. Lets all share the
road with each other, and lets stop
being such maniacs even if were not
the worst.
Slow down out there
Use caution when driving on the roads, especially this time of year
Your thoughts
How bad is the driving out there? How can
we get better? Should more regulations
be put on New Jersey drivers to improve
safety? Let your thoughts be heard
through a letter to the editor.
Delran High School welcomes new
assistant principal Brian Stolarick
By KRYSTAL TOMASSO
The Sun
Delran High School new assistant prin-
cipal Brian Stolarick begins his job on Jan.
2. Superintendent Patricia Camp and Prin-
cipal Daniel Finkle feel this is the right fit
for the district. They insist it is because of
Stolaricks passion and focus on charity
and the good of the students.
Working together, thats not always
measurable, but its invaluable, Stolarick
said.
These values have caused some, such as
Camp, to be excited for the year at DHS.
Im looking forward to his fresh ideas.
Hes very much into community service in-
volvement, Camp said. He has high aca-
demic standards and believes all kids can
learn.
I think Delran is perfect for me with the
physical makeup of the school district,
Stolarick said. The number of students is
ideal. Its big enough for diversity, but not
enough to get lost. The elementary schools
dont compete. Its not complicated; its
ideal. There arent large district transition-
al problems, hindrances and hurdles.
This appreciation of the districts make
up is what has helped Finkle feel encour-
aged for the future of the high school.
I think that one of the reasons he was
chosen was because he really and truly em-
bodies my philosophy of putting children
first, Finkle said. We want them to have
a great experience and to succeed in what-
ever they choose to do. We want to have the
full administration on the same page.
I think his energy, dedication to serving
and learning makes him an excellent edu-
cator, Finkle said. He cares about stu-
dents academically. He will work with stu-
dents to ensure a great experience at Del-
ran High School.
One of the reasons Stolarick believes
this will be a great experience is the team
effort from the administration and his
drive to keep the school as a whole in the
perspective of a team effort.
I think Im a team player, Stolarick
said. Im at home being a teammate, and I
dont need to be in the forefront. I dont
need those accolades. I appreciate the
schools accolades.
Stolaricks goal in the position of assis-
tant principal branched off what he
learned while working at Delran Middle
School.
I think my last three weeks as acting
principal at Delran Middle School has reit-
erated knowledge to know students not
please see STOLARICK, page 15
beam. We are only repairing to
support the pipe, Catrambone
said.
The township finally has the
funds to award the bid for the
valve repair after almost two
years of limbo. It has been a long
journey not just from the initial
breakage, but also obtaining suffi-
cient funding to do the necessary
repairs.
We didnt delay for a month
because we wanted to. It would be
stupid, and peoples homes are in
involved. What to do and how to
do it take longer than you think,
Catrambone said.
The council understands the
need and it has not dragged its
feet, Catrambone said.
Water levels are rising, there
are floods, houses have been
abandoned and damaged,
Catrambone said.
According to Catrambone, the
delay was not a lack of desire to
resolve the issue, but rather bid-
ding issues. According to Catram-
bone, Department of Environ-
mental Protection gave an esti-
mate. However, the council faced
challenges with the amount that
was approved and the amount
bidders offered. Catrambone ex-
plained that the initial bids were
higher than the funds available
for the project and had to be
thrown out. A new bidding began,
but this time with very clear spec-
ifications.
For the homes damaged, this
is the first Band-Aid, if it does
what its supposed to, and helps
those damaged homes, Catram-
bone said.
He explained that after this, the
township will keep a close eye on
how the new repairs work out
and if there will need to be fur-
ther assessments if the repairs
dont resolve the issue.
In other news:
The council established the
salary for a new hire, a full-time
CFO. In the past, a part-time CFO
was tested, but didnt work.
The township worked inter-
nally and made a resolution to as-
sign risk management consultant
work to Jeff Hatcher. Hatcher is
certified to handle township in-
surance. The township typically
saves $30,000 a year because
Hatcher maintains his certifica-
tion.

just by name, by what makes
them tick. It gives me a much bet-
ter chance of counseling them,
knowing them on a much deeper
level, Stolarick said.
According to Camp, there were
69 completed applications.
Screening narrowed it to 19 appli-
cations to be considered. There
were three rounds of interviews
beginning with 11 people in the
first round. Interviewers includ-
ed DHS administrators, teachers,
parents, students and, in later in-
terview rounds, central office ad-
ministrators as well, specifically
Camp and the director of student
services.
Along with his degrees, Stolar-
icks experience and certifica-
tions helped put him above all the
other candidates, Camp said. Sto-
laricks degrees are a B.A. from
Shippensberg University in geog-
raphy and an M.A. from Wilming-
ton College in school leadership.
His certifications are as a social
studies teacher, supervisor and
principal.
Stolarick worked in Pennsylva-
nia as a teacher and counselor in
college prep and GED programs.
He has been a teacher and super-
visor in Delran since 2000.
According to Camp, Stolarick
has contributed to the academic
spectrum by spearheading devel-
opment of new courses at DHS in-
cluding AP government, debate,
Vietnam and film.
I appreciate the close-knit
community, Stolarick said. I
feel like I found a home in Del-
ran.
Stolarick has been a teacher,
supervisor in Delran since 2000
