Troop 356/856 Merit Badge Day 2013 Swimming Merit Badge Day Plan SUMMARY The Merit Badge Day Swimming event will be held at Blue Lake Swim Club in Irvine. It is a large, heated, Olympic size pool, with diving area and boards. It has lifeguards on duty on Saturdays and the bottom of the pool is fully visible. Troop 356/856 will (1) comply with the BSA Safe Swim Defense guidelines, and (2) ensure that each Scout fully achieve each requirement through appropriate adult supervision. We will have a adult ratio of no less than 8:1, and will have at least one lookout. All counselors will be experienced swimmers who have taught the Merit Badge in the past. Compliance with SAFE SWIM DEFENSE required
1. Qualified Supervision. All counselors will have completed the Safe Swim Defense training, have a card on his/her possession, and agree to use the Safe Swim Defenses. Each of the counselors and aides will be experienced swimmers and will know the 8 defenses of the Safe Swim Defense Program. 2. Swimmer Fitness. We will require evidence of fitness for swimming activity with a complete acknowledgment of the Scouts health history from the parent or legal guardian and a waiver. 3. Safe Swimming area. The Blue Lake pool is very safe and manned by lifeguards. It is no deeper than 12 feet in any area. In the last two years, no markings were needed, and Scouts were allowed full use of the pool. 4. Lifeguards and Supervision. Blue Lake pool has trained lifeguards, and we anticipate a counselor/adult/aide-to-Scout ratio of no more than 1:8. The lifeguards have contingency plans, and Troop 356/856 will review those plans on the activity day. 5. In addition to the lifeguards, Troop 356/856 will appoint one person as a lookout, to review all swimmers during the activity. 6. Abilities. This is not a swimming teaching activity, but rather a swimming merit badge completion. Parents will be asked to confirm prior to the activity that their Scout can pass the Swimmer test, swimming at least 100 yards, with a sharp turn, with a float rest after completion, (if a scout cannot pass the swimmer test he will be asked to leave). 7. Buddy system. We will require the buddy system, with a check to be done at least every 20 minutes. 8. Discipline. All Scouts will be taught the SSD program, and required to comply with each rule. While one warning may be issued, a Scout may be asked to leave if he does not comply.
