Question 1: Statistical Software, Inc., offers a toll-free number where customers can call from 7 A.M. until 11 P.M.

daily with problems involving the use of their products. It is impossible to have every call answered immediately by a technical representative, but it is important customers do not wait too long for a person to come on the line. Customers become upset when they hear the message Your call is important to us. The next available representative will be with you shortly too many times. To understand their process, Statistical Software decides to develop a control chart describing the total time from when a call is received until the representative answers the callers question. Yesterday, for the 16 hours of operation, five calls were sampled each hour. This information is reported below, in minutes until a call was answered. Based on this information, develop a control chart for the mean duration of the call. Does there appear to be a trend in the calling times? Is there any period in which it appears that customers wait longer than others?

Question 2: A metal fabricator produces connecting rods with an outer diameter that has a 1.00 +/- 0.01 inch design specification. A machine operator takes several sample measurements over time and determines the sample mean outer diameter to be 1.002 inches with a standard deviation of .003 inch. a. Calculate the process capability index for this example. b. What is the defect rate? c. Suppose the process mean is now centred at 1.00 inch. What should be the process standard deviation so the it is a 6-sigma process. What about 4-sigma process? Question 3: C-Spec, Inc., is attempting to determine whether an existing machine is capable of producing an engine part that has a key specification of 4+/- 0.003 inches. After a trial run on this machine, C-Spec has determined that the machine has a sample mean of 4.001 inches with a standard deviation of .002 inch. a. Calculate the Cpk for this machine. b. Should C-Spec use this machine to produce this part? Why?
