BEFORE unit one test)

1. Make flash cards of the vocabulary. Rehearse them five times.

Have a parent sign you off and bring both the cards and the
signature.

2. Make a flow chart of the scientific method

3. Make a power point or a 1 page summary with a picture of a

scientist of choice

4. Report (of any kind) about an occupation in science

5. Design and perform an experiment in front of the class using

steps of the scientific method.

6. Poster tracing the path of energy starting with sun and ending
as heat in space. Label at least five energy changes.

7. Make a collage of smaller systems that make up one larger

system.

8. Remember your current event

option!!!

Observati An experience perceived

through one or more senses.
on

Inference An assumption, conclusion, or

logical interpretation based on
observations or prior knowledge
Hypothesi A testable explanation for the
question or problem.
s

Conclusio How we sum up the

investigation. Does the data
n collected from the experiment
support the hypothesis?
Compare When you examine objects or
events to determine their
similarities.
Contrast When you examine similar
objects or events to determine
their differences.
Cause The reason for the event.

Effect The event or result of an action.

Technolog The application of human

discoveries to solve problems or
y tasks.

Bar graph A graph used to show

information collected by
counting.

Pie graph A graph used to show how some

fixed quantity is broken down
into parts (usually shown as
percents).
Line graph A graph used to show trends or
continuous change.

System Something made of 2 or more

parts that work together to form
a whole.
Closed Matter and energy stay with-in
the boundaries of the system.
system

Open Matter and energy can flow in

and out of the boundaries of the
system system.

Biosphere The living part of the earth

system.

Hydrosphe The water part of the earth

system.
re

Atmospher The gaseous part of the earth

system (includes weather).
e
Geosphere The soil, rock, or crust part of
the earth system.

Energy The ability to do work or cause

change.

Matter An object that has mass and

takes up space.

Density The amount of matter per

volume in an object.
(mass/volume)
Variable A factor that changes in an
experiment.
