ANY LEVEL METHOD EARTHWORK CALCULATION SPREADSHEET

The spreadsheet Any Level Method is used to compute the volume of earthwork. This spreadsheet uses the Any Level Method (Coordinate Method) to compute the end area of the em ankment or e!cavation at a "iven #tation. $arth fill and e!cavation yarda"e must e entered and calculated on separate spreadsheets. This spreadsheet can only calculate one type of earthwork at a time. %or more information on $arthwork Computations usin" the Any Level Method see& South Dakota Engineering Technical Note Design SD 1 . 'sers new to the Any Level Method are stron"ly encoura"ed to review the Tech (ote )esi"n*#)*+ and the various e!amples for different cross*sections. The user has two options for enterin" the cross*section data. $nter the rod readin"s and distances from the survey on the #urvey (otes ta and the spreadsheet will convert the entered rod readin"s to elevations. $nter elevations and distances directly in the Any Level Method ta . The user can enter data in cells that are shaded yellow. Located on the #urvey (otes ta and the Any Level Method ta is a #how all #tations utton. ,hen this utton is pushed- all ./ availa le #tations for enterin" cross*sections are displayed. The 0ide #tations utton will hide the last +1 #tations- ut it will not delete the data that has een entered in them.

Survey Notes
The user enters an elevation ($lev.) of a enchmark (2M) and the ack si"ht (2.#.) on the enchmark. A hei"ht of the instrument (0.3.) is computed as shown in %i"ure +. The hei"ht of the instrument is used to convert the 4od 4eadin"s to $levations- which are referenced to the enchmark elevation. 5nly one 0.3. can e used in this spreadsheet. The elevations are placed on the Any Level Method Ta . F g!"e 1# S!"ve$ %a&a !'e% &o (o)ve"& "o% "ea% )g' &o e*eva& o)'.

Hints for Entering Rod Readings and Distances 3f the e"innin" or end stations will have an end area of 6ero- do not enter any rod readin"s or distances for the e"innin" or endin" station. )istances to the left of the centerline are entered as a ne"ative num er. ,hen enterin" data in the #urvey (otes ta - the first rod readin" and distance is repeated at the end. (otice how the 4od 4eadin" and )istance of +7./ and *8..8 in %i"ure . is entered at the e"innin" and end. 4epeatin" the first 4od 4eadin" and )istance at the end is necessary to have a closed area for the cross*section. 2oth earth fill and e!cavation cross*sections are entered in a clockwise order "oin" around the fi"ure. Any lank entry within a cross section or a distance not entered in order will cause errors. ,hen enterin" the rod readin"s 9 distances (coordinates) for each cross*section- the entire perimeter of the cross*section must e defined with coordinates- includin" the desi"n surfaces as staked. Therefore- rod readin"s 9 distances must e determined for all points not located on the ori"inal surveyed "round surface. %or the e!ample in %i"ure .- the coordinate points 1.:;*<.= and 1.:;<.= were added to the actual survey to define the top of the dam. Cuttin" and pastin" data can cause formattin" errors and is not recommend.
