Asthmaisacommonconditionwhichaffectsthesmallairpassages(bronchi)ofthelungs.These passagesbecomeswollenandinflamed,andthisleadstotheproductionofmucus(fluid).During anasthmaattack,thesesmallairwaysbecomenarrow.Thisreducestheflowofairinandoutof thelungs.Thismayleadtowheezing,coughinganddifficultywithbreathing.Notallchildrenwho haveasthmawillwheezeorcough. Asthma attacks can be controlled Anasthmaattackcanbecontrolledwithmedication.Asthmaisanillnessthatcomesandgoesat differenttimes.Mostchildrenwithasthmawillhaveanoccasionalattack,whileafewwillhave symptomseveryday. Asthma is triggered by different things Asthmatendstoruninfamilies.Itisalsoassociatedwithotherconditionssuchaseczema, hayfeverandallergies.Asthmaistriggeredbydifferentthingsfordifferentchildren.Somecommon triggersare: Colds Changesintheweather Cigarettesmoke Dustanddustmites Pollen Someanimals.
Asthma can be controlled with treatment Asthmacanbewellcontrolledwiththeappropriatemedicationinalmostallchildren.With treatmentandpropermanagement,almostallchildrenwithasthmacanplaysports,enjoyleisure activitiesandleadactivelives.Themedicinesworkbyeitheropeningthenarrowairwaysor preventingthemfromnarrowinginthefirstplace.Thetwocommontypesare: Relievers-quickactingandusedduringanattacktoopentheairways(suchasBricanyl, RespolinandVentolin). Preventers-slowactingandusedtopreventanattackfromoccurring(suchasBecotide, IntalandPulmicort).
Italsohelpstoavoidknowntriggers. Your doctor can help with medication and advice Yourdoctorwillprescribethecorrectmedicationandexplainhowtouseit.Asthmamedicationmay notworkifithasnotbeentakencorrectly.
