Asthma
Asthmaisacommonconditionwhichaffectsthesmallairpassages(bronchi)ofthelungs.These passagesbecomeswollenandinflamed,andthisleadstotheproductionofmucus(fluid).During anasthmaattack,thesesmallairwaysbecomenarrow.Thisreducestheflowofairinandoutof thelungs.Thismayleadtowheezing,coughinganddifficultywithbreathing.Notallchildrenwho haveasthmawillwheezeorcough. Asthma can be controlled with treatment Asthmacanbewellcontrolledwiththeappropriatemedicationinalmostallchildren.With treatmentandpropermanagement,almostallchildrenwithasthmacanplaysports,enjoyleisure activitiesandleadactivelives.Themedicinesworkbyeitheropeningthenarrowairwaysor preventingthemfromnarrowinginthefirstplace.Thetwocommontypesare: Relievers-quickactingandusedduringanattacktoopentheairways(suchasBricanyl, RespolinandVentolin). Preventers-slowactingandusedtopreventanattackfromoccurring(suchasBecotide, IntalandPulmicort).

Italsohelpstoavoidknowntriggers. Your doctor can help with medication and advice Yourdoctorwillprescribethecorrectmedicationandexplainhowtouseit.Asthmamedicationmay notworkifithasnotbeentakencorrectly.
