IMPROVEMENT IN GHURNS.

To ALLwHoM IT MAY coNoERN: l

Be Ait known that I, RW. SHRINER, of Woodland, in the county of Barry, _and State of Michigan, have invented a new and improved Uhuru; .andl do hereby declare that >the following is a full,`clear, and exact description thereof,.which'will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom

panying drawings, forming part of lthis specification, in which

Figure 1 represents a front viewof'the same, partly in section; Figure 2 represents a vertical cross-section, taken on a plane indicated by the line :t x, g. 1.'

This invention relates to any improvement in the power by which a churn vis worked, and has for its object
the giving -to the dasher an up and down motion aswell as an alternate horizontal rotary motion ; and the invention

consists not only in the pecularity of this motion,~by which the butter is much easier made than by any other known motion, but also in the constructionA of the machinery by which the above-mentioned' object maybe attained. The construction of the power must be such that any siz ed churn may be worked by it without interfering with its
efficiency. `, i f Y I ' . i

The frame A, which is made of any suitable material, and strong enough to carry the machinery-which forms part of my invention, supports the horizontal' driving-shaft B. To one end of this shaft is Vattached the main driving-wheel C, the surface of which is perforated with a number of set-holes, a, into one of which, according to the length of stroke' required, the pin b is inserted. A block, c, which turns loosely> around the pin, operates the
slide D up and down; that is to say, when the lwheel C is turned by means of the crank E, it carries the 'block c around. and as the latter is enclosed in a horizontal groove within the slide D, it will raiseor lower the said slide, which is again guided by andbetween two uprights, d. The main wheel C, is a cog-wheel, as seen in the drawings, and turnsthe pinion e which is attached to one endof the shaft f, and thus the. balance-wheel F is turned, which also is attached to the shaft f.' To the lower end of the slide D, but so- _that it may; freely turn within.v it, is rmly attached the screwshaft y', which passes at its lower end ,through a smallboard, D', forming p'art and being an extension of slide D, and thus the screw-shaft gis well guided. `Just below the board D the dasher shaft h is attached to the shaft g by means of a set-screw,'as` seen in the drawings, and the dasher G will consequently

follow the movements of' .the slide Dand the screw

Intothe frame A is firmly imbedded the nut z', through

which _the serewg passes, and as the-'thread -on the latter lis very much elongated, so as to make about one revolutionfto av length equal to two o'r three of its'ldi'ameters, the screw _will when pulled through the nut t' rotate and reverse its directionas it is pulled up or pushed down. `Thtls the dasher will receive an up and down motion as well as analternate horizontal rotaryone ; and as by the same the cream is stirred much better than by the

ones heretofore used, butter will evidently be quicker made. The set-holes a, in the wheel O, permit the adapting
of the- machine to larger or smaller churns, and as -the shape of the >churn or dasher does not requireto be of a

particular kind, the machine can be adapted to almost every kind and size of churns now'inuse. Thev churn-H
is held in place by a lever, K; which is pivoted to the frameA, Aas seen in the-drawings. v \ ' '

Having thus desorihedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is~-The screw g, and its combination with the uut z', slide D, anddIVing-wheel C, 'constructed as shown for the
purpose of imparting the aforesaid motion te the dasher G,
