Throughout pattern the begining ch counts as a stitch. Number in () indicates total number of stitches. Skip the first st of each row even if I forget to mention it. Ch.8 R1: dc in third ch from hook and each ch across, turn (7) R2: ch2, skip 1st st, *fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st*, repeat * to * until last st, hdc in top of ch 2. turn (7) this is the right side R3: ch2, skip 1st st, *bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st*, repeat * to * until last st, hdc in top of ch 2. turn (7) In following rows I will say work in the rib pattern. I am referring to this pattern in rows 2 & 3. Now you will begin working the increase rows. R4: ch2, skip 1st st, fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st, 2 fpdc in the next st (this is the middle st. in the row), bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st, hdc in top of ch 2, turn (8) R5: ch2, skip 1st st, bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st, hdc in space between last st worked and next st, (you are working a hdc in between the 2 fpdc you worked in the same st in the middles of the previous row), bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st, hdc in top of ch 2, turn (9) R6: ch2, skip 1st st, fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st, bpdc next st (you are working this st around the post of the hdc added in the previous row), fpdc in next st, bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st, hdc in top of ch 2, turn (9)

R7 18: Continue working in the above increase pattern until row 18. At the end of row 18 you will have 17 sts. (you will have 17 sts at the end of row 17, continue to work the third row of the increase pattern for row 18) Here is a basic overview of the increase pattern. First row - ch2, skip 1st st, work in rib pattern but work 2 fpdc in middle st, end with hdc in top of ch 2. Turn Second row - ch2, skip 1st st, work in rib pattern but work a hdc in the space between the 2 middle sts, end with hdc in top of ch 2. Turn Third row - ch2, skip 1st st, work in rib pattern being sure to work a bpdc around the hdc added in the previous row, end with hdc in top of ch 2. Turn Start over again with First row of increase pattern. R19 -27: work each row in the rib pattern. Skipping the first st, ending with hdc in top of ch 2. No increasing here. Now you will begin the decrease rows. R28: First row of decrease pattern: ch2, skip 1st st, work in rib pattern until you reach the middle three sts. (These three sts will be, in order fpdc, bpdc, fpdc), insert you hook to fpdc around the next 2 fpdc at the same time, ingnoring the bpdc, work in the rib pattern, hdc top of ch2, turn (15) R29: Second row of decrease pattern: ch2, skip 1st st, work in rib pattern across this row, hdc top of ch2, turn (15) R30: Third row of descrease pattern: ch2, skip 1st st, work in rib pattern until middle st, hdc in the middle st, work in rib pattern to the end of the row, hdc top of ch2, turn (15) R31: Fourth row of descrese pattern: ch2, skip 1st st, work in rib pattern until middle 3 sts (these 3 sts are the hdc and sts on either side of the hdc), fpdc the next 2 sts together (the fpdc & hdc) fpdc the next st, work in rib pattern to the end of the row, hdc top of ch2, turn (14)

R32: Fifth row of decrease pattern: ch2, skip 1st st, work in rib pattern until middle 2 sts, bpdc the these 2 sts together, work in rib pattern to the end of the row, hdc top of ch2, turn (13) R33: Sixth row of decrease pattern: ch2, skip 1st st, work in rib pattern across this row, hdc top of ch2, turn (13) R34-40: repeat the above pattern one more time, then for row 40 repeat row 28. You should have 7 sts at the end of row 40 R41-43: ch2, skip 1st st, work in rib pattern across this row, hdc top of ch2, turn (7) Botton hole: Ch1, sk 1st st, sc next st, ch3, sk next 3 sts, sc last 2 sts, turn Ch1, sk 1st st, sc next st, 3sc in ch 3 space, sc last 2 sts. Fasten off. Sew button on right side. Weave in ends. If you want you can sc around the outside edge, but I think it will be less stretchy if you do. I think it looks fine without it.
