(NAPSA)If you are looking
for affordable ways to get more
energy-boosting protein in your
diet, you may want to try peanuts
and peanut butter.
Wi th 7 grams per servi ng,
peanuts have more protein than
any nut. Coupl ed wi th thei r
more than 30 essential vitamins
and nutrients, peanuts are con-
sidered by many food experts to
be a superfood capable of pro-
vi di ng l asti ng energy. Thats
why they can be a smart addi-
tion to your diet any time of the
day.
Peanuts and peanut butter are
also affordable sources of protein
and convenientyou can take a
pack with you or stir peanut but-
ter in a smoothie or your oatmeal.
Value And Versatility
A growing number of families
are finding that peanuts and
peanut butterwith their nutri-
tion and flavoroffer both value
and versatility.
For some, that means adding
them to dinner recipes, such as a
stir-fry dish. Others consider
them essential ingredients in
salad dressings. Still others will
spread or sprinkle on toast for a
quick breakfast, put in soups and
stews or baked goods and, of
course, enjoy with jelly in a classic
sandwich.
Peanuts are even at home in a
more elegant dessert such as this
parfait.

(NAPSA)As the Affordable
Care Act is set to be fully imple-
mented, there is still much confu-
sion about how the law will affect
you and your family. Here are 10
things to know about the health
care laws protections and bene-
fits, courtesy of AARP:
1. Health insurance companies
can no longer drop your health
coverage if you become sick or
disabled.
2. Insurance companies cannot
discriminate against you because
of your health conditions or gen-
der. That means health insurance
companies can no longer charge
you more simply because of your
health status or gender.
3. Insurers cannot deny health
insurance to anyone under age 19
because of a pre-existing condi-
tion, such as cancer, diabetes or
heart disease. In 2014, Americans
of all ages will be afforded this
protection.
4. The health care law stops
insurance companies from limit-
ing lifetime coverage for essential
health benefits. In 2014, this
applies to yearly limits, too.
5. Preventing illness with the
right immunizations and screen-
ings will be simpler and less
expensive. Most insurance plans,
including Medicare, now must
cover preventive benefits such as
immunizations and screenings for
diabetes and certain cancers. Be
sure to check with your insurance
plan about what preventive ser-
vices are covered with no out-of-
pocket cost to you.
6. If you are uninsured, finding
affordable health coverage is now
easier, as it can be purchased via
your states Health Insurance Mar-
ketplaces. Its like an online shop-
ping mall. Youll be able to compare
the benefits and costs of health
plans side by side and pick the
plan that works best for you and
your family. For more information
on your Health Insurance Market-
place opening October 2013, visit
www.HealthLawAnswers.org.
7. Your children can stay on
your family policy up to age 26,
even if they dont live with you or
are married.
8. You can sleep well knowing
that your guaranteed Medicare
benefits are safe. The Affordable
Care Act strengthens Medicare,
and your guaranteed Medicare
benefits are protected, including
doctor and hospital visits and
rehabilitation services. If you
have Medicare, there arent any
other steps you need to take with
regard to the new health law.
9. The doughnut hole is going
away and the improved coverage
means your out-of-pocket costs for
prescription drugs will be lower if
you have Medicare Part D. If you
have high drug costs and reach
the doughnut hole this year, you
will get a 52.5 percent discount on
brand-name prescription drugs
and a 21 percent discount on
generic prescription drugs. Visit
the Doughnut Hole Calculator at
www.aarp.org/doughnuthole to
learn more about when you might
reach the doughnut hole and
potential medication options that
may reduce your costs or help you
avoid the coverage gap entirely.
10. Theres help to pay for
insurance coverage. If your job
does not offer health coverage and
you have a limited income, you
may be able to get financial help
to pay for insurance coverage pur-
chased through the Health Insur-
ance Marketplace.
If you are a small-business
owner, you will have more insur-
ance choices and opportunities to
qualify for tax credits.

UnderstandingThe Affordable Care Act
Starting on January 1, 2014, in-
surance companies cannot dis-
criminate against you because of
your health conditions or gender.
(NAPSA)If yours is like most
households in the United States,
you have at least one pet.
Thats a good thing, considering
that people who understand health
care have discovered something
interesting about animalsthey
can help improve your health.
How Pets Help Your Health
According to Dr. Heather Dou-
glas, DVM, St. Georges Univer-
sity/School of Veterinary Medicine,
06, pets can be good for you in four
ways. They can decrease your:
Blood pressure
Cholesterol levels
Triglyceride levels
Feelings of loneliness.
The CDC goes on to say that
pets can increase your:
Opportunities for exercise
and outdoor activities
Opportunities for socialization.
Adds Dr. Douglas, its a good
idea to include your dog in your
exercise regimen. Whether its
running, walking or even yoga
(which dogs seem to enjoy), start
slowly and gradually build up tol-
erance to avoid injury to either of
you. One day a week of yoga prac-
tice can improve your flexibility,
strength, balance and focus.
Based on a study by Glenn N.
Levine and others published in
the Circulation journal of the
American Heart Association, she
says, there is an association
between pet ownership (primarily
cat or dog) and lower blood pres-
sure. It was also found that dog
owners, who are more likely to
exercise with their pet, may have
a reduced risk of obesity. Dog own-
ership is also associated with
decreased cardiovascular risk and
may have some role in reducing
cardiovascular disease.
The human-animal bond is an
amazing phenomenon that offers
health benefits to both the person
and pet. Incorporating mans best
friend into a workout regime can
add fun to exercise, while improv-
ing the health of both the human
and animal involved.
Furthermore, according to a
study by the Stroke Institute of
Minnesota, owning a cat can dra-
matically reduce your chances of
dying from heart disease by 30
percent. The researchers suspect a
dog study would provide similar
results.
A Smart Place
To Study These Ideas
One place where the study of the
interaction between humans and
animals is at the forefront is St.
Georges University, a fully accred-
ited center of international medical
and veterinary education on the
island of Grenada in the Carib-
bean. There, faculty from 140 coun-
tries and students from around the
world are looking into how learning
about the health of humans and
animals can be related.
At St. Georges, the Schools of
Medicine and Veterinary Medi-
cine, the Department of Public
Health and Preventive Medicine
and the Windward Islands
Research and Education Founda-
tion provide a collaboration of
expertise to support the concept of
One Health, One Medicine and
to take students from residency to
fellowship training to employ-
ment. Its all part of the univer-
sitys global approach to medicine.

Fascinating Facts About Humans And Animals
Having pets is good for your
health, doctors say.
(NAPSA)To help you stay in
the know while on the go, todays
cars are equipped with all kinds of
clever ways to keep you, the driv-
er, informed and connectedand,
more important, doing so in a
much safer way. If your car isnt
already equipped to keep you con-
nected, its actually easy to add a
device that will transform your
car into a connected car. For
example, one of the most smart-
phone-friendly options for the car
today is the latest smartphone-
powered in-dash receiver, AppRa-
dio 3, which replaces your current
car stereo, and through the free
AppRadio app (available in the
Apple iTunes App Store and
Google Play Store) control dozens
of compatible apps ranging from
entertainment to navigation.
Using similar touch and motion
gestures that you re already
accustomed to with your smart-
phone, you can more safely access
these features on a high-resolu-
tion, 7-inch capacitive touch-
screen. For additional safety and
convenience, the receiver offers a
variety of other important in-vehi-
cle technologies:
iPhone and Android OS
connectivityThe receiver offers
connectivity with the most popular
smartphones, on both iOS and
Android operating systems. Most
iPhones, including iPhone 5, and
dozens of Android devices are com-
patible, enabling drivers to simply
plug in and go.
BluetoothWith built-in
Bluetooth technology, you have the
freedom to leave your phone in
your pocket or purse and have the
ability to make hands-free calls and
stream music wirelessly without
having to plug in your phone. Youll
have the added convenience of con-
trolling music coming from the
device directly on the large touch-
screen display of the in-dash
receiver.
MirrorLinkFormed by the
Car Connectivity Consortium, Mir-
rorLink lets users connect compati-
ble smartphones to an in-dash
receiver like AppRadio 3 via an
optional MirrorLink cable, to access
the three essentials needed in the
carcontacts, music and naviga-
tion apps.
Voice ControlThe conve-
nience of voice control helps to keep
attention and eyes on the road,
where they need to be, and not on a
phone. The receiver offers two voice
technology options to do that:
Siri Eyes FreeFor con-
sumers who use an iPhone 4S or
the latest iPhone 5. When acti-
vated, the Siri voice prompt plays
through the vehicles speakers, and
questions and commands are
received and transmitted using the
included microphone. This gives
you access to perform many iPhone
functions, including music selec-
tion, listening to and composing
text messages, maps, calendar
information, reminders and more.
Voice Recognition for
AndroidConsumers with com-
patible voice-enabled Android
smartphones can use Google Voice
for hands-free calling and finding
and playing stored music on the
device. AppRadio 3 (SPH-DA210)
also includes playback of conven-
tional media with a CD/DVD slot
and an AM/FM tuner. It was devel-
oped by the experts of in-vehicle
entertainment, Pioneer Electronics,
and provides rich and powerful
sound quality for an enhanced driv-
ing experience.

(NAPSA)Your home is proba-
bly the biggest monetary invest-
ment youll ever make, so its a
good idea to carefully discuss your
houses siding choices with your
home builder or remodeler.
For homeowners, in particular,
natures wild sidehurricanes,
high winds, heavy rain, fire and
floodcan be a big concern.
Whats more, that sort of thing
seems to be on the upswing:
According to Weather.com, four of
the top five costliest hurricanes
have occurred since 2005, while
Insure.com notes that six of the
top 10 costliest wildfires have
struck in the last 10 years.
Thats why, if youre consider-
ing a home building or remodel-
ing proj ect, its important to
choose products that best protect
that investment, including the
siding.
There are several materials
you can consider, including:
1. Fiber cement, which consists
of sand, cement and cellulose fiber
2. Masonry
3. Wood-based siding, including
cedar and wood-composite
4. Vinyl.
Compared with vinyl or wood-
based siding, fiber cement siding
is better formulated to handle the
rigors of both everyday and ex-
treme weather. Consider this:
Fire: Fiber cement siding is
noncombustible, so it doesnt con-
tribute any fuel to a fire. Con-
versely, vinyl siding melts and
burns and wood-based siding
burns.
Impact: Fiber cement siding
resists impact from objects blown
by a storms high winds much bet-
ter than vinyl siding.
Flood: Fiber cement siding is
a Class 5 flood-resistant material
according to the Federal Emer-
gency Management Agency. This
differs from wood-based siding,
which is not moisture resistant
and prone to rotting.
Certain types of fiber cement
siding go even further to protect
your home. For example, James
Hardie siding is engineered for
the homes specific climate. That
means for homes in cooler, wetter
areas, proprietary additives are
included in the formulation to
decrease the water absorption
rate and protect it from wet or
freezing conditions. For those in
hotter, dryer places, the formula-
tion is tailored to protect the
house from wind and dry heat.
You can learn more about how
the right siding can protect a
home, even during a hurricane, at
www.jameshardie.com/protection.
Consider SidingThat Better Protects AHome FromWeather
You may be able to protect your
home against severe weather

(NAPSA)Life changes can
happen at any time. From car
repairs to medical bills and
tuition payments, these changes
can upset the delicate financial
balance that many consumers
need to maintain.
What options are available to
consumers to cope with these
changes?
Credit CardsWhen using a
credit card for a cash advance,
consumers are often faced with
high interest rates of more than
20 percent. Also, depending on the
balance, making just the mini-
mum payments each month can
extend the life and total amount
of debt.
401(k) Savings Accounts
Taking money from this fund may
not be the best choice to address
financial needs. In addition to
reporting this money as taxable
income, withdrawals from a
401(k) may be subject to extra
taxes of 10 percent.
Payday LoansA short-term,
unsecured loan providing cash
advances based on employment
records, payday loans can be
extremely costly. With annual per-
centage rates frequently ap-
proaching 400 percent, other
options should be considered.
Personal Bank Loans
Many consumers turn to personal
bank loans to get the money they
need to cover major expenses.
However, its important to weigh
the immediate need for cash
against the interest and debt that
must be repaid over time.
Peer-to-Peer Lending
Although boasting lower interest
rates than traditional banks, peer-
to-peer lending can pose a risk to
borrowers. Borrowers often do not
know who their actual lender is,
as these arrangements are usually
set up by a third party. Therefore,
borrowers may find their loan
falling through at a time when
they need the money most.
Structured Settlement Pay-
ment SalesPersonal injury
lawsuits, malpractice claims and
other payouts can be distributed
in structured settlements. These
payments are divided over several
years and structured to provide a
steady stream of income based on
each consumers individual situa-
tion. When extra cash is needed to
respond to life emergencies, sell-
ing all or a portion of these settle-
ment payments in exchange for a
tax-free lump sum can be a sensi-
ble choice.
This transaction provides con-
sumers with the money they need
now, is not contingent on the con-
sumers credit, and creates no
future obligation to pay anything
back. This can give consumers the
ability to obtain the funds they
need without accumulating debt.
In addition to state and federal
laws, a judge approves each and
every structured settlement sale
to third-party buyers.
J.G. Wentworth is an industry
leader in purchasing structured
settlement payments. To learn
more, visit www.jgwentworth.com
or call (866) 429-9050.
Considerations For Cash
When extra cash is needed to re-
spond to life emergencies, sell-
ing all or a portion of structured
settlement payments for a tax-
free lump sum can be a sensible
choice.
(NAPSA)Drivers who listen
closely will find that their car is
actually communicating with
them by using a language all its
own.
Sounds such as squealing,
thumping, hissing and grinding
are all signs that your vehicle may
be trying to tell you something.
Thats the word from the
experts at the Car Care Council.
While many motorists are familiar
with noises their vehicles make on
a daily basis, any noise that is
new, different or suspicious may
indicate a problem.
For example, a high-pitched
squeal that stops when pressing
on the brake pedal is a sign that a
vehicles brakes should be in-
spected. The same goes for grind-
ing that could be the result of
worn brake pads that should be
replaced.
Thumping that increases and
decreases with the speed of the
vehicle could mean a trip to your
local service center. The diagnosis
may be a tire problem like a bub-
ble in the sidewall or torn rubber
that could lead to a blowout.
Under The Hood As Well
Sounds under the hood can also
indicate that your vehicle is in
need of attention. Hissing may be
caused by a disconnected or
cracked vacuum hose. A squealing
noise while revving the engine
could be due to a slipping drive
belt. Inspection and repair will
allow your vehicle to operate more
safely and efficiently.
Its important for car owners
to listen and act accordingly when
their vehicle speaks up, said Rich
White, executive director, Car
Care Council. By checking out
what your vehicle is saying, you
can take care of the problem now
and avoid a breakdown or more
costly repairs later.
The number of sounds a vehi-
cle may make is endless, so when
your car is trying to tell you some-
thing, its important to be alert,
listen carefully and take action,
added White.

source of information for the Be
Car Care Aware consumer educa-
tion campaign promoting the ben-
efits of regular vehicle care, main-
tenance and repair to consumers.

Many bakers are known to use

pantries. That way, the cherries
are available when the inspiration

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted
butter, softened
cup granulated sugar
cup light brown sugar,

purpose gluten-free flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
teaspoon kosher salt
15 maraschino cherries
stems removed, patted dry

Combine the flour, baking
powder and salt in a mixing
bowl and whisk together. Add
to the butter and sugar mixture
and beat just until combined.
With a spatula, scrape the
bottom and sides of the mixing
bowl to make sure all ingredi-

chips and fold in.
Drop spoonfuls of the cook-
ie dough onto the prepared
baking sheets. Gently flatten
the cookies. Bake for 1012

(NAPSA)Keeping kids healthy
can be a tough job. Sometimes, the
things that are good for kids arent
always what they want.
But moms know that eating
healthy and being active can help
kids grow strong bodies and lower
their future risk of obesity and
health problems like type 2 dia-
betes, heart disease and some
types of cancer. It can also help
them do better in school.
Start by being a good role
model. Kids are more likely to eat
fruits and vegetables if they see
you eating them, too. Be a good
role model by staying active and
doing activities the whole family
can enjoy.
There are also many ways to
make healthy eating fun. One way
is by encouraging kids to help in
the kitchen. When kids help pick
and cook food, they are more
likely to eat it. Younger kids can
tear lettuce for salads or rinse
fruits and vegetables while older
kids can chop and slice.
The Network for a Healthy Cal-
ifornia provides these and other
mom-tested tips to empower fami-
lies to live better by eating more
fruits and vegetables and being
active every day. The tips come
from Champions for Change, real
moms who are role models for
healthy change.
You dont have to turn your life
upside down to make healthy
changes. Even small changes add
up quickly to make a big differ-
ence, like adding fruit to cereal or
offering crunchy carrots instead of
chips as a snack.
Here are more mom-tested tips
on how to make healthy change
fun:
Kids get excited when they
can pick what they are going to
eat. Have them pick the fruits and
vegetables they want to pack in
their lunch each day.
Keep fruits and vegetables in
easy-to-reach places at home to
encourage healthy snacking.
Leave a bowl of fresh fruit on the
table and cut vegetables in the
fridge. Get a mix of dried fruits
and let kids make their own trail
mix.
Make shopping fun. Let kids
pick three colors of fruits and veg-
etables to try, or choose three
fruits to snack on during the
week.
Be creative when cooking.
Try fun ideas like arranging dif-
ferent vegetables on pizza to make
a face. Use slices of bell pepper for
the mouth and eyebrows, olives
for the eyes, and a cherry tomato
or carrot for the nose.
Play together. Turn off the
TV and turn up the music. Have a
dance contest to everyones fa-
vorite songs. Enjoy the outdoors
and go for family walks, ride
bikes together or play at a local
park.
You can find more great tips,
resources and healthy recipes that
kids will love at www.CaChamp

book.com/NetworkForAHealthy

FindThe Fun In Healthy Eating
It may be easier than you think to
get your family to enjoy a health-
ful meal together.
(NAPSA)Millions of young
lives around the world can benefit
from a surprising resource. Amajor
international corporation is using
its global expertise in hygiene and
health, innovative technology and
consumer communication capabili-
ties to help Save the Children
deliver lifesaving treatments.
The Problem
Many people are not aware of
it, but nearly one in 10 child
deathsapproximately 800,000
each yearare due to diarrhea.
Often, these deaths are caused by
poor home environments, inade-
quate personal hygiene and lack
of access to essential services such
as health care, sanitation, clean
water and basic nutrition.
At an unacceptable rate, chil-
dren in the developing world are
dying from completely prevent-
able diseases, like diarrhea, says
Justin Forsyth, Chief Executive of
Save the Children. We have
already made dramatic progress
in reducing the number of chil-
dren dying, but there is still much
more that needs to be done.
A Solution
The company, Reckitt Benckiser
(RB), has teamed up with Save the
Children to target the devastating
global death rate in children under
5 from diarrhea by 2020. RB is a
global consumer goods leader
whose portfolio includes iconic
brands such as Clearasil, Durex,
Mucinex, Lysol, Veet, Finish, Air
Wick and Woolite. Together, Save
the Children and RB want to help
stop diarrhea from being one of the
biggest causes of death in children.
While the goal is ambitious, they
believe its achievable.
Businesses like RB have a
responsibility beyond results. Our
larger role is to do more for the
world. We want to make a differ-
ence by providing innovative solu-
tions for healthier lives and hap-
pier homes, says Rakesh Kapoor,
CEO of RB. Our growing partner-
ship with Save the Children will
go some way to creating lasting
improvements in the health and
hygiene of vulnerable children
and families globally.
To start, RB has provided ini-
tial funding of more than $35 mil-
lion and is engaging its more than
36,000 global employees in the
fight. In addition, RB is developing
innovative products such as a low-
cost de-germer and conducting a
mass-reach hand hygiene cam-
paign to create safer home envi-
ronments for babies and children.
The Healthier kids, Happier
homes global partnership will
help bring RB and Save the Chil-
dren a step closer to achieving
their mutual vision, one in which
no child under the age of 5 dies
from preventable causes.
This is just one example of how
business and nonprofit organiza-
tions can make a difference in the
world.

(NAPSA)Nearly 360,000 peo-
ple experience cardiac arrest out-
side of a hospital each year and
most of those victims die, often
because bystanders dont know
how to start CPR or are afraid
theyll do something wrong. The
American Heart Association
believes kids are the answer to
saving more lives.
How That Works
The nations oldest and largest
voluntary organization dedicated
to fighting heart disease and
stroke, the American Heart Asso-
ciation, is helping prepare more
students, their teachers and their
families to save lives with the
CPR in Schools Training Kit

. The
hands-on, interactive kit is based
on the latest science and makes it
easy for educators to train the
next generation of lifesavers in 30
minutes or less.
Students practice CPR with their
own inflatable manikin while watch-
ing and learning from a DVD such
lifesaving techniques as hands-only
CPR, giving breaths, choking relief
and how to use an automated exter-
nal defibrillator. The portable kit
can be reused to train a whole class,
grade or school. Each kit comes with
10 manikins and instructional DVDs
so kids can take training home and
help pass these lifesaving skills on
to their family and community.
Doctors Opinion
Four out of every five out-of-hos-
pital cardiac arrests occur in private
or residential settings, so we have
to find ways to emphasize the impor-
tance of knowing CPR to save the
lives of family members and loved
ones, said Robert W. Neumar, M.D.,
Ph.D., professor and chair of the
University of Michigan Medical
Schools Department of Emergency
Medicine. The kits enable educa-
tors to teach students lifesaving CPR
and empower schools to serve the
families in their communities, added
Neumar, who serves as Chair of the

(NAPSA)For a breakfast,
brunch or light lunch with a twist,
try a decadent French toast stuffed
with Brie cheese and duck bacon.
Easy to make and elegant to serve,
this dish is baked in a hot oven, mak-
ing it handy for feeding a crowd.
Duck Bacon and Brie Cheese
Stuffed French Toast
recipe by Celebrity Chef Ben Vaughn
Total Time: 30 minutes
Serves 4
8 slices day-old bread
(sourdough)
4 large eggs, lightly beaten
dash salt
2 tablespoons sugar
1
2 cup milk
1
2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 ounce of bourbon
8 ounces domestic Brie
cheese
12 slices Maple Leaf Farms
Duck Bacon,
cooked crispy
8 tablespoons melted butter
for topping
Maple syrup and
powdered sugar for
topping
Preheat the oven to 375 F. In
a small bowl, beat the eggs with
salt, sugar, milk, vanilla and
bourbon. Pour into flat-bottomed
dish large enough to accommo-
date a few slices of the bread.
Submerge bread slices in the
dish to soak up some of the egg
mixture. Turn with a spatula and
let them soak on the other side,
but not too long or they will be
too saturated and difficult to
handle. Gently remove four
soaked bread slices and trans-
fer to a well-buttered baking
sheet. Place 2 ounces of cheese
on each slice. Add three slices of
crispy bacon on top of each
cheese portion. Finish by top-
ping with an additional soaked
bread slice. Press the filled bread
together firmly. Place the sheet
pan with the French toast in the
preheated oven; bake for 15 to
20 minutes, turning after the first
810 minutes to brown on both
sides. Serve immediately with
melted butter, maple syrup and
powdered sugar.
Why Duck Bacon?
Aside from the great taste, duck
bacon from Maple Leaf Farms has
57 percent less fat and 26 percent
less sodium than pork bacon. It
also doesnt compromise on taste or
texture like other poultry bacon.
Its a lean and tasty alterna-
tive to the standard, overused
pork belly bacon, says celebrity
chef Ben Vaughn.
The naturally applewood-
smoked duck bacon is excellent
with eggs, sandwiches, in salads
and even in brittle for a sweet and
savory snack.
Where To Get It
You may find duck bacon in the
meat case of gourmet grocery stores,
at retailers and online at www.maple
leaffarms.com/duck-bacon.
