1 Facing the direction of the Kabah


1- When you stan u! to !ray, "ace the irection o" the #a$bah %here&er you are, in both "ar 'obli(atory) an naa"il 'su!erero(atory) !rayers. *his is one o" the !illars o" !rayer, %ithout %hich !rayer is not &ali . 2- *he obli(ation o" "acin( the irection o" !rayer oes not a!!ly to one %ho is en(a(e in %ar"are, %hen he !rays the "ear !rayer 'salaat al-+ha%") or is en(a(e in hea&y "i(htin(. ,t also oes not a!!ly to those %ho are unable to o it, such as one %ho is sic+, or one %ho is tra&elin( on a shi!, in a car or on a !lane, i" they "ear that the time o" the !rayer %ill ela!se 'be"ore they reach a !lace %here they can "in the correct irection). An it oes not a!!ly to one %ho is !rayin( a naa"il !rayer or %itr !rayer %hilst ri in( on a ri in(-animal etc., but it is mustahabb "or him to "ace the -iblah i" he is able to o so %hen !ronouncin( the ta+beer o" ihraam 'at the be(innin( o" the !rayer), then he may "ace %hate&er irection he is "acin(. 3- .&eryone %ho can see the #a$bah must "ace it/ those %ho cannot see it must "ace its irection. 0ulin( on not "acin( the #a$bah in !rayer by mista+e: 1- ," a !erson !rays not "acin( the -iblah, because o" clou s 2!re&entin( him "rom %or+in( out the irection "rom the !osition o" the sun3 or some other reason, a"ter he i his best to %or+ out the ri(ht irection, his !rayer is &ali an he oes not ha&e to re!eat it. 4- ," someone %hom he trusts comes 5 %hilst he is !rayin( 5 an tells him o" the ri(ht irection, then he must hasten to turn that %ay, an his !rayer is &ali .

2 Qiyaam (standing in prayer)


6- ,t is obli(atory to !ray stan in(. *his is a !illar 'essential !art o" !rayer), e7ce!t "or the one %ho is !rayin( the "ear !rayer or at times o" intense "i(htin(, %hen it is !ermitte to !ray %hilst ri in(/ "or the one %ho is sic+ an unable to stan , %ho shoul !ray sittin( i" he is able, other%ise lyin( on his si e/ an the one %ho is !rayin( a naa"il !rayer, %ho may !ray %hilst ri in( or sittin( i" he %ishes, an he in icates the ru+oo$ an su8oo %ith his hea . *he one %ho is sic+ may also o this, an he shoul ma+e his su8oo lo%er than his ru+oo$. 9- ,t is not !ermissible "or one %ho is !rayin( sittin( o%n to !ut somethin( raise u! on the (roun in or er to !rostrate on it. 0ather he shoul ma+e his su8oo lo%er than his ru+oo$ 5 as %e ha&e mentione 5 i" he is unable to touch the (roun irectly %ith his "orehea . Prayer on boar a shi! or air!lane 8- ,t is !ermissible to !ray "ar !rayers on boar a shi! or air!lane. 9- ,t is !ermissible to !ray them sittin( o%n i" one "ears that one may "all.

10- ,t is !ermissible to lean on a !illar or stic+ %hen stan in(, i" one is ol or %ea+ in bo y. :ombinin( stan in( an sittin( in !rayer 11- ,t is !ermissible to !ray -iyaam al-layl stan in( or sittin( %ith no e7cuse, or to o both. ;o a !erson may !ray an recitin( sittin( o%n, an 8ust be"ore oin( ru+oo$ he may stan u! an recite the rest o" the aayahs stan in( u!, then o ru+oo$ an su8oo , then he can o li+e%ise in the secon ra+$ah. 12- ," he !rays sittin( o%n, he shoul !ray sittin( cross-le((e or in %hate&er !osition he "in s com"ortable.

Praying wearing shoes


13- ,t is !ermissible to !ray bare"oot, or to !ray %earin( shoes. 11- ,t is better to !ray sometimes bare"oot an sometimes %earin( shoes, accor in( to %hat is easy/ one shoul not ma+e it i""icult to !ut shoes on or to ta+e them o"" in or er to !ray ," a !erson is bare"oot, he shoul !ray bare"oot an i" he is %earin( shoes then he shoul !ray %earin( shoes, e7ce!t %hen there is a reason not to o so. 14- ," he ta+es them o"", then he shoul not !lace them to his ri(ht/ rather he shoul !lace them to his le"t, i" there is no one on his le"t, other%ise he shoul !ut them bet%een his "eet. *here is a subtle hint that he shoul not !lace them in "ront o" himsel". *his is the eti-uette %hich most %orshi!!ers i(nore, so you see them !rayin( "acin( their shoes< *his is %hat %as narrate in the saheeh re!orts "rom the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him).

Praying on the minbar


16- ,t is !ermissible "or the imaam to !ray on an ele&ate !lace such as the minbar, in or er to teach the !eo!le. ;o he shoul stan u! on it to !ray, then say ta+beer, recite =ur$aan an o ru+oo$ %hilst he is on that !lace, then he shoul come o%n bac+%ar s so that he can !rostrate on the (roun at the base o" the minbar, then he may (o bac+ to it an o the same in the secon ra+$ah as he i in the "irst. ,t is obli(atory to !ray "acin( a sutrah an be close to it 19- ,t is obli(atory to !ray "acin( a sutrah 'screen or co&er), there is no i""erence %hether that is in the mos-ue or else%here, %hether the mos-ue is bi( or small, because o" the (eneral meanin( o" the ha eeth o" the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him), >Do not !ray e7ce!t "acin( a sutrah, an o not let anyone !ass in "ront o" you, an i" he insists then "i(ht him, "or he has a com!anion '-areen) %ith him? 5 meanin( the ;haytaan. 18- ,t is obli(atory to be close to the sutrah, because this is %hat the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him) comman e . 19- @et%een the !lace %here the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him) !rostrate an the %all there %oul be a s!ace nearly bi( enou(h "or a shee! to !ass throu(h. 20- *he sutrah shoul be a!!ro7imately a han s!an or t%o abo&e the (roun , because the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him) sai : >When one o" you !laces in "ront o" him somethin( such as the stic+ on the en o" a sa le, he shoul !ray an not %orry about anyone %ho !asses in "ront o" that.? *his ha eeth in icates that a line on the (roun is not su""icient, an the ha eeth narrate concernin( that is a$ee" '%ea+). 21- Ae shoul "ace the sutrah irectly, because this is a!!arent meanin( o" the comman to !ray to%ar s the sutrah. ;te!!in( sli(htly to the ri(ht or le"t so that one is not "acin( it irectly, is not correct. 22- ,t is !ermissible to !ray "acin( a stic+ !lante in the (roun an the li+e, or a tree, or a !illar, or one$s %i"e lyin( o%n in be un erneath her blan+et, or an animal, e&en i" it is a camel.

Prohibition of praying towards graves


23- ,t is not !ermitte to !ray "acin( (ra&es at all, %hether they are the (ra&e o" Pro!hets or o" others. Prohibition o" %al+in( in "ront o" one %ho is !rayin( e&en in al-Cas8i al-Aaraam 21- ,t is not !ermitte to %al+ in "ront o" one %ho is !rayin( i" there is a sutrah in "ront o" him 2i.e., it is not !ermissible to come bet%een him an his sutrah3. *here is no i""erence in this re(ar bet%een al-Cas8i al-Aaraam an other mos-ues, all o" them are the same in that this 2%al+in( in "ront o" one %ho is !rayin(3 is not !ermitte , because o" the (eneral meanin( o" the %or s o" the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him): >," the !erson %ho !asses in "ront o" one %ho is !rayin( +ne% ho% (reat a bur en o" sin resulte "rom that, stan in( "or "orty 2years3 %oul be better "or him than !assin( in "ront o" one %ho is !rayin(.? *his re"ers to !assin( bet%een him an the !lace o" his !rostration. *he ha eeth %hich s!ea+s o" the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him) !rayin( in Aaashiyat al-Cataa" %ithout a sutrah an %ith !eo!le !assin( in "ront o" him is not saheeh, e&en thou(h it oes not say that they %ere !assin( bet%een him an his !lace o" !rostration. ,t is obli(atory "or the one %ho is !rostratin( to !re&ent the one %ho %ants to !ass in "ront o" him, e&en in Cas8i al-Aaraam. 24- ,t is not !ermissible "or the one %ho is !rayin( to%ar s a sutrah to let anyone !ass in "ront o" him, because o" the ha eeth -uote abo&e, >Do not let anyone !ass in "ront o" youD? An because the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him) sai : >When one o" you is !rayin( to%ar s somethin( %hich is a sutrah bet%een him an the !eo!le, an someone %ants to !ass in "ront o" him, then he shoul !ush him in the u!!er chest an re!el him as much as he can.? Accor in( to another re!ort: >D he shoul sto! him t%ice, but i" he insists then he shoul "i(ht him, "or he is a e&il.?

Stepping forward to prevent someone passing in front of him


26- ,t is !ermissible "or a !erson to ta+e one or t%o ste!s to the "ront, in or er to !re&ent one %ho is not res!onsible "rom !assin( in "ront o" him, such as an animal or a small chil , an to ma+e them !ass behin him.

hat brea!s prayer


29- *he sutrah is so im!ortant to !rayer that it !re&ents a !erson$s !rayer "rom bein( in&ali ate , i" someone !asses in "ront o" him. *his is in contrast to the one %ho oes not use a sutrah, %hose !rayer is bro+en i" an a ult %oman, a on+ey or a blac+ o( !asses in "ront o" him.

" #iyyah (intention)


28- *he %orshi!!er must ha&e the intention o" !rayin( the !rayer "or %hich he is stan in(. Ae must ha&e the intention in his heart o" !er"ormin( a s!eci"ic !rayer, such as the "ar 'obli(atory !rayer) o" Euhr or o" FAsr, or the ;unnah o" those !rayers. *his is a con ition or !illar 'essential !art) o" the !rayer, but utterin( the intention &erbally is a bi $ah %hich (oes a(ainst the ;unnah, %hich %as not su((este by any o" the imams %ho are "ollo%e .

29- *hen he shoul start the !rayer by sayin( >Allaahu a+bar 'Allaah is Cost Great).? *his is an essential !art o" the !rayer, because the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him) sai : >*he +ey to !rayer is !uri"yin( onesel" '%u oo$), it is entere by ta+beer 'sayin( FAllaahu a+bar$) an e7ite by tasleem 'sayin( Fal-salaamu Falay+um$)? i.e, once you say ta+beer, certain thin(s are !rohibite an this !rohibition en s %hen you say tasleem. 30- Ae shoul not raise his &oice %hen sayin( ta+beer in all the !rayers, unless he is actin( as an imaam. 31- ,t is !ermissible "or the mueHHin to con&ey the ta+beer o" the imaam to the !eo!le, i" there is a nee to o so, such as i" the imaam is sic+ an his &oice is %ea+, or because there are many %orshi!!ers !rayin( behin him. 32- *he one %ho is "ollo%in( the imaam shoul not say ta+beer until the imaam has "inishe sayin( ta+beer.

&aising the hands how it is to be done


33- Ae shoul raise his han s %hen sayin( the ta+beer, or be"ore or a"ter oin( so. All o" these are !ro&en in the ;unnah. 31- Ae shoul raise them %ith the "in(ers stretche out. 34- Ae shoul raise them le&el %ith his shoul ers, or sometimes until they are le&el %ith his earlobes. , say: %ith re(ar to touchin( the earlobes %ith the thumbs, there is no basis "or this in the ;unnah, rather in my &ie% this has to o %ith %as%aas 'insinuatin( %his!ers o" the ;haytaan).

P'acing the hands how it is to be done


36- *hen he shoul !lace his ri(ht han on his le"t, imme iately a"ter the ta+beer. *his is the %ay o" the Pro!hets '!eace be u!on them), an this is %hat the Cessen(er o" Allaah '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him) en8oine u!on his com!anions. ,t is not !ermissible to let the arms han( at the si es. 39- *he ri(ht han shoul be !lace on the bac+ o" the le"t han , %rist an "orearm. 38- ;ometimes the le"t han may be (ras!e %ith the ri(ht. *he combination o" !lacin( an (ras!in(, %hich %as "a&oure by some later scholars, has no basis.

39- *he han s shoul be !lace on the chest only/ there is no i""erence bet%een men an %omen in this re(ar . , say: !lacin( them any%here other than on the chest is a$ee" '%ea+) or has no basis. 10- ,t is not !ermissible to !ut the ri(ht han on the %aist.

11- *he %orshi!!er must be humble in his !rayer, an shoul a&oi e&erythin( that may istract him "rom it, such as a ornments an ecorations. Ae shoul not !ray %here there is "oo that he %ants to eat, or %hen he nee s to urinate or e"ecate. 12- Whilst he is stan in(, he shoul loo+ to%ar s the !lace %here he %ill !rostrate. 13- Ae shoul not loo+ to the ri(ht or the le"t, because loo+in( here an there is a snatchin( a%ay %hich the ;haytaan steals "rom the !rayer o" the sla&e. 11- ,t is not !ermissible "or him to loo+ u! at the s+y.

14- *hen he shoul start the !rayer %ith some o" the u$aa$s %hich are narrate "rom the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him). *here are many o" these, the most "amous o" %hich is >;ubhaana+a Allaahumma %a biham i+a, %a tabaara+a ismu+a %a ta$aala 8a u+a, %a laa ilaaha (hayru+a 'Glory an !raise be to Iou J Allaah, blesse be Iour name an e7alte be Iour Ca8esty, an there is no (o but Iou).? *he comman to o this is !ro&en so %e shoul a here to it. 16- *hen he shoul see+ re"u(e %ith Allaah 5 this is obli(atory, an he is sinnin( i" he omits to o so. 19- *he ;unnah is sometimes to say >A$oo hu @illaahi min al-;haytaan il-ra8eem, min hamHihi %a na"+hihi %a na"athihi ', see+ re"u(e %ith Allaah "rom the accurse ;atan, "rom his ma ness, his arro(ance an his !oetry),? 5 !oetry here re"ers to blame%orthy +in s o" !oetry. 18- An sometimes he may say, >A$oo hu @illaah il-;amee$ il-A$leem min al-;haytaanD ', see+ re"u(e %ith Allaah, the All-Aearin(, All-#no%in(, "rom the ;haytaanD).? 19- *hen he shoul say silently 5 %hether the !rayer is to be recite alou or silently 5 >@ismillah il-0ahmaan il-0aheem ',n the Kame o" Allaah, Cost Gracious, Cost Cerci"ul).?

40- *hen he shoul recite ;oorat al-Laatihah 'the "irst soorah o" the =ur$aan) in "ull, inclu in( the @asmalah '@ismillaahi il-0ahmaan il-0aheem). *his is an essential !art o" the !rayer, %ithout %hich the !rayer is not &ali . *hose %ho o not s!ea+ Arabic must memoriHe this soorah. 41- *hose %ho cannot remember it shoul say: >;ubhaan Allaah, %a$l-ham u-Millaah, %a laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, %a Allaahu a+bar, %a laa ha%la %a laa -u%%ata illa @illaah 'Glory be to Allaah,

!raise be to Allaah, there is no (o but Allaah, Allaah is Cost Great, an there is no stren(th an no !o%er e7ce!t %ith Allaah).? 42- *he ;unnah is to recite it one &erse at a time, an to !ause at the be(innin( o" each aayah. ;o he shoul say: >@ismillaah il-0ahmaan il-0aheem ',n the Kame o" Allaah, the Cost Gracious, the Cost Cerci"ul),? then !ause. *hen say, >Al-Aam u Millaahi 0abb il-FAalameen 'All the !raises an than+s be to AllNh, the Mor o" the FAalameen 'man+in , 8inn an all that e7ists), then !ause. *hen say: Fal-0ahmaan il-0aheem '*he Cost Gracious, the Cost Cerci"ul), then !auseD an so on, until the en o" the aayah. *his is ho% the Pro!het '!eace an blessin(s o" Allaah be u!on him) use to recite the %hole soorah, !ausin( at the en o" each aayah an not 8oinin( one aayah to the ne7t, e&en i" there is continuity o" the meanin(. 43- ,t is !ermissible to rea it as Caali+i Ia%m i -Deen or Cali+i Ia%m i -Deen.

)ow the one who is praying behind the imaam sho('d recite it
41- *he one %ho is !rayin( behin the imam shoul recite it behin the imaam in !rayers %here =ur$aan in recite silently an in !rayers %here it is recite alou , i" he cannot hear the imam$s recitation, or i" he !auses a"ter com!letin( it so that those %ho are !rayin( behin him can recite it. We thin+ that this !ause %as not !ro&en in the ;unnah. , say , ha&e mentione the e&i ence o" those %ho thin+ that this !ause is !ermissible an the re"utation o" that e&i ence, in ;ilsilat alAhaa eeth al-Da$ee"ah, no. 416, 419, !art 2, !. 21-26, Dar al-Ca$aari" e ition.

&ecitation after a'+Faatihah


44- ,t is ;unnah to recite 5 a"ter al-Laatihah 5 another soorah, e&en in ;alaat al-OanaaHah '"uneral !rayer), or some aayahs, in the "irst t%o ra+$ahs. 46- *he recitation may be ma e len(thy sometimes, an shorter sometimes, "or reasons o" tra&el, cou(hin(, sic+ness or the cryin( o" an in"ant. 49- *he recitation &aries accor in( to the !rayers. *he recitation in La8r !rayer is lon(er than it is in all the other !rayers. Ke7t lon(est is Euhr, then FAsr, then F,sha$, then Ca(hrib, usually. 48- *he recitation in the ni(ht !rayers '-iyaam al-layl) is lon(er than all o" these. 49- *he ;unnah is to ma+e the recitation lon(er in the "irst ra+$ah than in the secon . 60- Ae shoul ma+e the recitation in the last t%o shorter than in the "irst t%o ra+$ahs, hal" the len(th. ," you %ant more etails on this to!ic, see ;i"at al-;alaah !. 102 'Arabic ori(inal).

&eciting a'+Faatihah in every ra!ah


61- ,t is obli(atory to recite al-Laatihah in e&ery ra+$ah. 62- ,t is ;unnah to a to it in the last t%o ra+$ahs as %ell.

63- ,t is not !ermissible "or the imaam to ma+e his recitation lon(er than that %hich is escribe in the ;unnah, because that is i""icult "or those %ho may be !rayin( behin him, such as the el erly an sic+, or nursin( mothers, or those %ho ha&e other thin(s to o.

&eciting a'o(d and reciting -(iet'y


61- =ur$aan shoul be recite alou in La8r an Oumu$ah !rayers, .i !rayers, !rayers "or rain 'istis-aa$), !rayers at the time o" an ecli!se '+usoo") an in the "irst t%o ra+$ahs o" Ca(hrib an F,sha$.

64- ,t is !ermissible "or the imaam occasionally to ma+e an aayah au ible in the !rayers %here recitation is to be one silently. 66- ,n Witr an =iyaam al-Mayl, he shoul recite silently sometimes an alou sometimes, an he shoul be mo erate in raisin( his &oice.

%artee' reciting at a meas(red pace


69- *he ;unnah is to recite the =ur$aan at a measure !ace, not -uic+ly or hastily. ,t shoul be rea in a manner that clearly istin(uishes each letter, beauti"yin( the =ur$aan %ith one$s &oice. Ae shoul obser&e the %ell +no%n rulin(s o" the scholars o" *a8%ee an he shoul not recite it in the inno&ate manner o" sin(ers or accor in( to the rules o" music.

Prompting the imaam


68- ,t is !rescribe "or the one %ho is !rayin( behin the imaam to !rom!t the imaam i" he hesistates in his recitation. 6 5 0u+oo$ 'bo%in() 69- When he has com!lete the recitation, he shoul !ause brie"ly, to catch his breath. 90- *hen he shoul raise his han s in the manner escribe "or ta+beerat al-ihraam 'the ta+beer at the be(innin( o" !rayer). 91- An he shoul say ta+beer '>Allahu a+bar?). *his is obli(atory. 92- *hen he shoul o ru+oo$, bo%in( as ee!ly as his 8oints %ill let him, until his 8oints ta+e the ne% !osition an are rela7e in it. *his is an essential !art o" !rayer.

93- Ae shoul !ut his han s on his +nees, "irmly, s!acin( the "in(ers out, as i" he is (ras!in( his +nees. 2a!ing the essentia' parts of prayer e-(a' in 'ength


98- ,t is ;unnah to ma+e the essential !arts o" !rayer e-ual in len(th, so the ru+oo$, the stan in( a"ter ru+oo$, the !rostration an the sittin( bet%een the t%o !rostrations shoul be ma+e a!!ro7imately the same in len(th. 99- ,t is not !ermissible to recite =ur$aan in ru+oo$ or in su8oo .

80- *hen he shoul strai(hten u!
