WATER SUPPLY SAMPLE DESIGNS 8B.9 HANDPUMP APRON

1. OVERVIEW The following document outlines the design calculations for a keyhole shaped concrete handpump apron suitable for community water supply. The apron slab is made from ordinary concrete with reinforcement where the drainage canal joins the main apron and along the length of the canal. Calculations are based on the following design rules 1. The concrete apron slab is sitting on a foundation of 15cm crushed rock to allow for contraction/expansion and to strengthen weak patches of ground. 2. A standard 1:2:4 concrete mix, with a cement 3 dosage of 320 kg/m has been used for the apron slab calculation. 3. Base slab thickness has been designed for the weight of the structure and loading (five to eight 2 people per m ) and the reaction of the soil pressing upwards. The slab has sufficient strength to enable it to span weak patches of ground and is determined using the empirical rule that no slab should be less than 10cm thick. Due to the low loading and short spans, no reinforcement is necessary. 4. The design assumes that handpump apron construction is part of a large water supply program and that it is possible to fabricate a special metal formwork. If not, it is better to adapt the design to a square shape and construct a formwork using wooden planks (see single tapstand examples). 3.1 EXCAVATION AND FOUNDATION Excavation = [ x (1.85 m / 2) + (2.0 m x 0.4 m) ] x 0.2 m 3 = 0.7 m

Foundation Vol. = [ x (1.85 m / 2) + (2.0 m x 0.4 m) ] x 0.15 m 3 = 0.5 m 3.2 CONCRETE SLAB (Dosage 320 kg/m - 1:2:4) Slab Concrete = [ x 0.925 + (2.0 x 0.4) ] x 0.2 2 - [ x 0.825 + (2.1 x 0.2) ] x 0.1 3 = 0.43 m 3 3 Cement = 0.43 m x 320 kg/m = 138 kg (2 bags) 3 Sand = 0.43 m x 0.45 3 = 0.19 m 3 Gravel = 0.43 m x 0.9 3 = 0.39 m

For drainage canal, assume 6 mm reinforcement bars spaced every 10 cm both ways. Reinforcing Bar = ((2.5 m / 0.10 m) x 0.35 m) + (2.5 m x 3) = 16.25 m (1.5 bars) 3.3 PUMP PILLAR (Dosage 320 kg/m - 1:2:4) Pillar Concrete = 0.45 m x 0.45 m x 0.5 m 3 = 0.1 m 3 3 Cement = 0.1 m x 320 kg/m = 32 kg (2/3 bag) 3 Sand = 0.1 m x 0.45 3 = 0.05 m 3 Gravel = 0.1 m x 0.9 3 = 0.09 m
