NEW TRENDS & HIGHER ARCHITECTURAL EDUCATION IN 21ST CENTURY

professor MSc Petar Arsi Teaching assistant Ivica Nikoli, PhD student FACULTY OF ARCHITECTURE UNIVERSITY OF BELGRADE

Introduction - Approach
According to conference program, its interdisciplinary character and focus on some basic and essentials questions for human kind at the beginning of 21st century, we try to elaborate the similar relation between actual time-global issues, architecture and possible relation to education.

Architecture, apart from its autonomy, specific inbetween nature, technique and art, is inseparable of its social, cultural and environmental dimensions.

We emphasize responsibility of architects. We also underline some important elements for education in architecture, having in mind possible ones: - Architecture as a discipline in charge of creating universal and long lasting values - Architecture as a discipline inseparable from major practical means (technology, construction, techniques) - Architecture as a humanistic discipline capable of improving life quality and social relations

ACTUAL CONTEXT global issues

ACTUAL CONTEXT global issues

The economic, political and cultural globalization, technical and digital development, are the main characteristics of actual civilization, at the beginning of the new millennium.

Globalism and obvious progress influence all aspects of contemporary life, and architecture as well, in both ways positive and negative.

Some positive influences and consequences:

- global network overcoming spatial boundaries and bring us pluralism of ideas and diversity

- the digital development and the computer design technologies, advanced construction methods and techniques, use of new constructing materials-all these presuppose and offer a wide range of possibilities for creation and building
- easy and fast access to all information and data

Some negative influences and consequences:

- market ideology mixed with political power, more than ever affect cities development and architecture - Everyday we face environmental, socio-economic and cultural challenges, such as: global warming, environmental degradation, diminishing nonrenewable resources, population migration - On the other side, we are witness of typisation of simple urban solutions and lack of unique and advantage spaces - In architectural solution today we do not see enough respect to regional values and local tradition and cultural diversity

Actual conflict s in space

- global vs. local - public vs. individual - technological vs. aesthetical - economy vs. Culture - political vs. professional - Academia (education) vs. practice

The very important tasks of 21st century design education is:

- To understand global issues - To understand complex reality - To understand the values of technology transformation

There is need for architecture:

- which is critical to existing circumstances - responsible to users needs - capable to deal with major global challenges and to solve them

We would like to emphasize some possible relation between three contextual elements of architecture
Environment

Architecture

People Society

Technology

We could say that is the coordinate system for each architect, and for education for sure: architecture its specific nature- discipline in itself, fully focused to the peoples needs technology based, environmentally oriented.

When we speak about architecture, its good to have in mind:

- Space is unique - Urban space is public good - City space is integral part of public interest - Building construction and city development are long term process - Mistakes in spatial design are difficult to get improved

Some ideas and proposals that can be significant for education

RESPONSIBILITY (OF ARCHITECTS )

Responsibility of all participants in design and construction process: Decision makers (politicians) Developers, investors, clients City authorities Urban planners Architects, creators and practitioners Professional associations Institutions of education

DEVELOPMENT SPACE CONCEPTS

Flexibility for future challenges Easy accommodation to future users needs Barrier and obstacle free architecture Space, stimulating for various actual and future activities - Space, capable of supporting growth and development for people and community

BASIC KNOWLEDGE vs. SPECIALIZATION

Strategy of education in developed countries is focused on: - Basic and general knowledge instead of specialization and atomization of knowledge - Todays market changes and challenges are dynamic. Tomorrow will be dramatic. - It is considered by theoreticians that only professional education developed on based and general knowledge will help professionals (architects) to adopt their activity to future market conditions and challenges

ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AND HEALTH CARE

Environmental approach - 70s Ecology principles - 80s Sustainable development - 90s and later on

Preservation and improvement of environment + health care - Beginning of 21s century

Conditions for preservation and improvement

- Use of natural and healthy materials - Use of healthy installations (water instead of air) - Use of natural factors (enough light, air, silence and greenery) - Comfort in dimensions (m2, m3, optimal space height) - Enough open space and greenery

IMPORTANT TASKS FOR ARCHITECTS (?), to be (re)considered

- Humanizing architectural and urban space - Create space capable to accommodate various life styles, existing and future ones - Design ambiance capable to stimulate real human relations, in family and community - Develop space which can stimulate growth, development and creativity

INSTEAD OF CONCLUSION
Is it possible to create an apartment or develop housing for people to feel themselves real human beings in it ? And further more: Is it possible to create working spaces and common public places for people, to feel themselves at home?
