Textbook (required): Elementary Technical Mathematics, 9th Edition

Prerequisite: Basic arithmetic skills as shown by the following:

MAT-053, Pre-Algebra with a grade of C or higher; OR
COMPASS Pre-Algebra score of at least 49; OR
ACT score of at least 16.

Course Description: This course covers essential topics in algebra, including ratio
and proportion, and basic statistics. This course is offered
during the first eight weeks of the fall and spring semester.

Course Content: Section 2.6 Scientific Notation

Section 3.1 – 3.7 The Metric System and Conversion
Section 5.1 – 5.7 Introduction to Algebra
Section 6.1 – 6.9 Equations & Formula
Section 7.1 – 7.4 Ratio & Proportion
Section 15.1 – 15.9 Basic Statistics

Grading Criteria: Grades will be based on points earned from tests, homework, quizzes
and other miscellaneous items. Letter grade will be assigned based
upon the following scale:

20% Homework & Misc. Items A 93% - 100%

20% Quizzes A- 90% - 92%
60% Tests B+ 87% - 89%
B 83% - 86%
B- 80% - 82%
C+ 77% - 79%
C 73% - 76%
C- 70% - 72%
D+ 67% - 69%
D 63% - 66%
D- 60% - 62%
F 59% & below
 Student Expectations
1. Expect to succeed!

2. Regular attendance is required. You are expected to arrive promptly (better to come
late than not at all). If you know that you are going to miss a class, please notify me in
advance and get any needed material. Any points completed on a day when you miss
can not be made up unless you contacted me prior to class.

3. There are NO MAKE-UP quizzes or exams unless you have made arrangements with
me ahead of time or you contact me on the day of the exam/quiz.

4. HOMEWORK is the most essential part of being successful in this class. You are
expected to do all assigned problems and may be tested over material that is not
covered in class but is assigned.

5. Calculator is suggested. Cell phones can not be used as calculators.

6. Tips on being successful: Come to class (on time)

Bring your materials (notes, paper, pencil, homework)
Give your best effort on assignments
Ask questions in class
Participate in class discussion
Be respectful to everyone in the classroom
Get additional help when needed!

7. Cheating will NOT be tolerated. If you are caught cheating, you will receive zero credit
for the particular assessment. I will notify the administration of your unacceptable
behavior.
