ETD 150
E.T.D. 150 stands for Elevated Temperature Drawing process. This eliminates heat
treating and secondary operations such as straightening, finish grinding, cleaning and
inspections. It can be roll threaded, knurled, and plated.

AISI 4140/41L40 - ANNEALED

HR

(ALSO AVAILABLE IN DCF)

This medium carbon alloy grade is widely used for many general purpose parts requiring
high tensile strength and toughness. 4140 contains chromium and molybdenum as
alloying elements and may be heat treated over a wide range to give the combined
advantages of proper hardness, strength and ductility. In conditions where localized
hardness may be required, this steel is readily flame or induction hardened.

AISI 4140/4142 CF Q&T

ROUNDS SIZE CHART

COLD FINISH

4140/4142 CF Q&T SR is a general purpose alloy used where substantial strength,

toughness and hardness are required. Through tempering, quenching and the coldfinishing process, the end result is improved strength and ductility, improved toughness,
better fatigue resistance and superior surface condition.
4140 CF Q&T SR Rounds are also calcium-treated for improved machinability and fully
stress relieved after drawing so that distortion during machining is held to a minimum.

ALRO BRAKE DIE

Prehardened Brinell 269/321

Alro Brake Die is a medium alloy steel heat treated at mill by oil quenching and tempering
to develop the best balance of mechanical properties. This prehardened steel has
every requisite for all around good service in any application requiring wear resistance,
toughness, high mechanical properties, and good machinability. In addition, the bars are
stress-relieved before final straightening. This ensures a minimum of residual stresses
so that bars remain straight during machining.
ADVANTAGES
Heat treated and ready to use for maximum wear and toughness. Machines easily
without warping - due to stress relief treatment. Machines to a smooth surface without
grinding.
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
Brake Die steel may be used for all types of dies for the forming and bending of sheets, strip
and other flat-rolled metallic and non-metallic materials. Many machine parts, requiring a
steel with high mechanical properties, can be made from Brake Die. Back up and support
tooling, die holders, and short-run stamping and bending dies all offer opportunities to
utilize the unique prehardened yet machinable characteristics of Brake Die.

FLAME HARDENING
Higher hardnesses at wear points may be achieved by merely heating a

oxyacetylene torch long enough to heat surface to a cherry red at

approximately 1,500oF.

Maintain flame nozzle 1/4" from work piece. No quench required. This

portion of metal will harden to a Rockwell of 54-59; due to the rapid

cooling produced by the conduction of heat from the small heated area

into the larger adjacent areas which have not been heat treated.

Reasonable care should be taken to prevent over heating and melting.

Out-of-round is the difference between the maximum and minimum diameters of the
bar, measured at the same transverse cross section. Out-of-square section is the
difference in perpendicular distance between opposite faces, measured at the same
transverse cross section.
