“My dear King Yudhiñöhira, when all the attempts of the demons
to kill Prahläda Mahäräja proved futile, the king of the demons,
Hiraëyakaçipu, being most fearful, began contriving other means
to kill him. Hiraëyakaçipu could not kill his son by throwing him
beneath the feet of big elephants, throwing him among huge,
fearful snakes, employing destructive spells, hurling him from
the top of a hill, conjuring up illusory tricks, administering poi-
son, starving him, exposing him to severe cold, winds, fire, and
water, or throwing heavy stones to crush him.”
Lesser Vaiñëavas would not be able to endure as staunchly
as Prahläda the severe kinds of distress imposed by Hiraëya-
kaçipu. In the face of such torments, anyone not as fully sur-
rendered and absorbed in remembrance of the Personality of
Godhead would lose the courage and determination to continue
serving the Lord. But none of these tests distracted Prahläda from
his devotional service. Being solidly fixed in bhakti-yoga, Prahläda
was empowered to preach effectively; the sons of the demon
enemies of Viñëu became Vaiñëavas by hearing Prahläda’s instruc-
tions and even just by touching or seeing him. Therefore in the
Hari-bhakti-sudhodaya (.), which is part of the Närada Puräëa,
the goddess of the earth, Dharaëé-devé, thus glorifies Prahläda’s
special potency:

“Ah, this human world is now especially fortunate since you, the
best of Vaiñëavas, are present. Everyone who touches you or
sees you and the symptoms of your ecstatic emotions will be-
come entitled to take up residence in Hariloka.”

C OMMENTARY: Not only did Lord Kåñëa look after the Päëòavas
as the invisible Supersoul, but He also dealt with them in various
public exchanges of love. Sometimes He drove Arjuna’s chariot.
In Yudhiñöhira’s court He sat as the head of the assembly of
advisers. Like an intimate servant, He anticipated the Päëòavas’
wishes, and at the Räjasüya sacrifice He humbly washed the
feet of every guest. He gave personal counsel to Yudhiñöhira
and carried messages for him. On occasion he would stand
guard all night with sword in hand. And He would follow Yudhi-
ñöhira in procession and offer words of praise like an ordinary
subordinate.
All Vaiñëavas take delight in hearing these glories of the Päë-
òavas. But one who has a special relationship with the Päëòavas,
like their grandson Parékñit, spontaneously feels special ecstasy
from such hearing. As Çré Süta Gosvämé describes in the First
Canto of Çrémad-Bhägavatam (..):

Or, inspired by affection for me, the Lord may call me just to
show me the beautiful form I love more than my own life.
tion. So he called Garuòa to His lotus feet and told him, “Please
hear My command. You should bring Hanumän from Kimpuruña-
loka.” Garuòa went, approached Hanumän, and told him, “The
Personality of Godhead, King of the Yädavas, is calling you, my
dear Hanumän. Go to Him at once.” But Hanumän, exclusively
devoted to Çré Raghunätha, ignored Garuòa’s request. Angered,
Garuòa tried to take Hanumän to Kåñëa by force, but Hanumän,
with the tip of his tail, pushed him effortlessly away.
Garuòa fell through the sky and landed at Dvärakä, where
Kåñëa, amused to see him, said, “Dear Garuòa, go back to
Hanumän and tell him that Çré Raghunätha is calling him.” After
dispatching Garuòa again, Kåñëa turned Himself into Lord
Rämacandra and made Çré Balaräma become Lakñmaëa. When
Queen Satyabhämä seemed unable to turn into Sétädevé, Kåñëa,
laughing, had Çré Rukmiëé become Sétä instead and placed her at
His left side. Then the three of them stood waiting for Hanumän
at Dvärakä.
When Garuòa met Hanumän and told him of the Lord’s re-
quest, Hanumän, filled with ecstasy, responded by running to
meet his Lord. He took darçana of the disguised Kåñëa, Bala-
räma, and Rukmiëé and offered prayers in devotion. Very much
satisfied with Hanumän, the Lord bestowed on him whatever
benedictions Hanumän chose.

Since his heart always burns in the fire of love for Kåñëa,
those garlands, fine garments, and sandalwood pulp at-
tract him no more than they would attract a man afflicted
by the fire of hunger.

“Except for the gopés, whose hearts had been stolen by Kåñëa,
the people could forget their suffering by embracing the wind
from the flower-filled forest. This wind was neither hot nor
cold.” (Bhägavatam ..) The gopés of Våndävana were so
intensely absorbed in viraha-bhäva that the cool breezes of
autumn only increased the burning in their hearts, because this
was the time of year when the fever of their hankering to be
with Kåñëa reached its peak. Hanumän cites the analogy of a
