Statement of Interest Professional Resume

December 3, 2013 Traci Mitchell 4511 142nd Pl SE Snohomish, WA 98296 425-365-2065 Dr. Cohn and Everett Public Schools Board of Directors: I am contacting you today because I have a sincere interest in joining the school board. My family has lived in the Everett Public Schools District for over 11 years. We moved into the Everett District due to its great reputation. I have an 11-year-old daughter who is a 6th Grader at Gateway Middle School. She entered Kindergarten at Penny Creek not really interested in reading. Shelley Petillo was the Principal at Penny Creek and had a goal that all students who left Kindergarten would be able to read. My daughter knew how to read by the end of the Full-Day Kindergarten year and by the end of 1st grade was placed into the Highly Capable program primarily due to her literacy skills. She is thriving at Gateway in the challenge courses and we are pleased to have Mrs. Petillo again as her Principal. It is because of the great teachers and staff within this district that I seek the Everett Public Schools Board position. This district is a model for STEM education and as a partner with the Everett Public Schools Foundation the district is able to receive funding from Boeing for expanding STEM programs. This district has embraced the Common Core and 21st Century Skills as other districts and states are debating these programs. Also, the Everett School Board was able to successfully negotiate teacher contracts during the worst economy in recent memory. I have served on the Everett Public Schools Foundation Board for the past five years and know the social and economic diversity within the Everett Public Schools District. I have followed the news about state funding and the McCleary decision. I believe in Full-Day Kindergarten and am pleased that EPSF supports many families by providing scholarships until full funding is available. I have enjoyed volunteering at High School & Beyond Nights to help the districts goal for all students to be career or college ready. While not everyone is suited for higher education, through the CTE courses students can learn about automotive technology and floral designs as well as accounting and marketing. There are so many reasons this is a remarkable district which has led to my decision to serve on the board. Based on my professional and personal experience, it is my hope that as an Everett Public Schools District Board member I could continue the impressive work of the district and I would be a valuable addition to the board. Sincerely yours, Traci Mitchell
