1. Executive Summary

Write this section last. It should be a page (no longer than 2) and include everything that you would cover in a five-minute pitch. Introduce your company. What product or service do you provide? Who will you be selling to (who are your customers)? What short term goals (1-2 years) and long term goals (3-5 years) do you have for your company? What makes you unique and special?

2. Company Summary This section describes your company. If you are writing a business plan for yourself, you may not need to complete this section. If you are writing the plan to get a loan or to attract investors or partners, then they will want to know about your company. If you decide not to do this section, you SHOULD do the Startup Plan and Funding table. This section includes: Legal entity and ownership - the structure of your company (Sole Proprietorship, Partnership, LLC, Corporation- S or C corporation). If there is more than one owner, detail what percentage each owner owns. Key employees of your business, such as Partners or the CEO, President and Vice President, etc., depending on the structure of your company. Location and facilities Depending on the type of business you have, the location and type of facilities may be more or less important. For a retail business, the location is very important. For a manufacturing business, the facility is more important. If you plan to write a Mission Statement, you would include that here as well. Startup and Funding Plan You will have many startup expenses before you even begin operating your business. Its important to estimate these expenses accurately and then to plan where you will get sufficient capital. This is especially important if you are doing this plan to get a loan or investment. ** The Start-up & Funding Plan is included in the Excel files that came with this template. 3. Products and/or Services List all of your major products or services and for each product or service, describe the most important features and benefits. Describe your pricing strategy. Describe Your Products Life Cycle. Intellectual Property (e.g. Do you have any copyrights, trademarks or patents or have you applied for patents?) Disclose whether any key aspects of a product may be classified as trade secrets.

4. Market Analysis Here is where the research happens. This section should include the following: Describe your target market (Your customers).

Distinguishing characteristics What are the demographics of the group and where are they located? Size of the primary target market In addition to the size of your market, what is the forecasted market growth for this group? How much market share can you gain? Describe your industry. Include your industrys current size, historic growth rate and the major customer groups within your industry.

Describe (and list) your main competitors Identify your competition by product line or service and market segment.

5. Strategy & Implementation This section should explain the following: Marketing Strategy How will your company communicate with customers? Describe the combination of the following tactics that will work best for your company: promotions, advertising (traditional and on-line), public relations, personal selling, and printed materials such as brochures, catalogs, flyers, etc. Sales Strategy This section explains the strategies and activities you will implement to makes sales. Your overall sales strategy should include two primary elements: Sales force strategy. If you are going to have a sales force, do you plan to use internal or independent representatives? How many salespeople will you recruit for your sales force? What type of recruitment strategies will you use? How will you train your sales force? How will you compensate your sales force? Sales activities. When you are defining your sales strategy, it is important that you break it down into activities. Will you be making sales calls? How many? Will these be meetings? Phone calls? Web meetings? Webinars? Seminars? What specific activities will you take to make sales?

6. Management Who will manage the business on a day-to-day basis? What experience does that person bring to the business? What special or distinctive competencies? Is there a plan for continuation of the business if this person is lost or incapacitated? If youll have more than 10 employees, create an organizational chart showing the management hierarchy and who is responsible for key functions. Include position descriptions for key employees. If you are seeking loans or investors, include resumes of owners and key employees.

7. Financial Plan The financial plan includes: Cash-flow Statement Profit and Loss (also called the Income Statement) Balance Sheet ** This section includes three spreadsheets that were included in the Excel files that came with this template. Insert the tables here after completing them. **

8. Appendix Details and studies used in your business plan and any other materials needed to support the assumptions in this plan. This may include:

Brochures and advertising materials Industry studies Maps and photos of location Magazine or other articles Detailed lists of equipment owned or to be purchased Copies of leases and contracts Letters of support from future customers Market research studies List of assets available as collateral for a loan
