Diary of Charles Bates, November, 1874
“The Chinese immigration to this state [California] is one of the most crying
evils, next to the corrupt system of government administration which afflicts
the welfare of this country.
Yes, the introduction of the yellow faced heathen is destined at no far distant
day to be one of the greatest curses that will befall California, for they bring
with them a train of evils over which we have no control. All the deep
seated and malignant diseases peculiar and inherent to a race of beings form
and reared in the midst of filth, and partaking of a diet that would soon prove
fatal to a dog, are imported with them, and scattered throughout the length
and breadth of our land. For a Chinaman will be a Chinaman no matter how
much he is whitewashed as the darkie says. This is the way that the
smallpox, leprosy, elephantiasis and many other kindred diseases not
peculiar to our people are being gradually but surely transplanted to our
shores by this race
What a gloomy prospect also is presented in the future for the growing
generation of this [sic] white boys. The very fact of the existence of that
brutish element the “hoodloom” especially here in San Francisco is mainly
due to the crowding out from the many trades formerly filled by them as
apprentices by the Chinese and thereby rendering them a public nuisance,
instead of useful thriving citizens.”
Chinese Exclusion Act (1882)

dollars, and imprisoned in a penitentiary for a term of not more than five years.
Immigration Cartoon
As you have seen, the issue of immigration to the
United States was a hot topic. However, immigration is
not a topic that has gone away; the issue of
immigration (both legal and illegal) is still being debated
in the United States today.
You will be taking over the role of a political cartoonist for the Baltimore Sun. The
immigration debate is front and center in the minds of your readers right now, and so
you decide to draw a cartoon illustrating your point of view. Here are the steps you
need to follow:
2. Determine whether you agree or disagree with the following question: Should
the United States allow more legal immigration?
3. Draw a political cartoon that shows your point of view. You have free reign
to draw it as you choose.
4. The cartoon may be done in pencil or ink, and it does not have to be
colored. You may draw it right on the back. It should include:
a. At least 3 symbols
d. Demonstrates that the student read and understood the article that was
provided
