Undergraduate Courses Taught in English


There are 3 courses at undergraduate level:

Advanced Molecular Chemistry (AMC) Course, Applied Marine Biology (AMB) Course and International Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Course (IMAC-U)

Checkpoint 1

Check your eligibility

You must already fulfill, or will fulfill by September 30, 2013, any one of conditions 1) - 3) below. In general, Japanese citizens are not eligible. If you are not a Japanese citizen, but have a Permanent Residence permit in Japan, you are not eligible.
1) You must have completed a 12-year course of school education in a country other than Japan, or have an equivalent education as specified by the Minister of Education. *I.e. you must have completed a curriculum equivalent to a Japanese high school curriculum. *If you underwent primary education starting at six years of age or younger, or completed a 12-year curriculum in 11 years or less (e.g. because you were moved ahead, or graduated early), you should inquire with Tohoku University by E-mail before applying. 2) You must fulfill any one of a - d below, and be 18 years of age a. You have an International Baccalaureate Degree granted by the International Baccalaureate Organization, which is a foundation established in accordance with Swiss Civil Law. b. You have an Abitur qualification to enroll in a university in the Federal Republic of Germany. c. You have a Baccalaureat qualification to enroll in a university in the French Republic. d. You have completed a 12-year curriculum at an educational institution in Japan that provides education to foreigners and received certification from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), Association of Christian Schools International (ASCI), or the Council of International Schools (CIS). 3) You are 18 years of age and your academic abilities were judged to be equal or superior to those of a high school graduate upon individual screening of your qualifications by this university. *When applying under this provision, you must contact the university by e-mail at least one month before the application deadline.

Checkpoint 2

Take all necessary examinations for applying to the undergraduate courses taught in English 1) You must submit scores for the required subjects from any one of the following:
(A) university entrance examination, (B) standardized national examination, or (C) the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU).
(A) university entrance examination You must take the following required subjects in the International Baccalaureate (IB), College Board SAT, and General Certificate of Education (GCE)
Course AMC and IMAC-U AMB IB 6 or more subjects, 3 or more of which must be Higher Level. Must include subjects relating to mathematics and science (both physics and chemistry are required). 6 or more subjects, 3 or more of which must be higher. Must include subjects relating to mathematics and science (any two from physics, chemistry and biology are required). SAT Subject Tests in Mathematics (both Level 1 and 2) and Science (both Chemistry and Physics) Subject Tests: Mathematics (both Level 1 and 2) and Science (any two from Chemistry, Physics, Biology E/M) GCE A-Level in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics

A-Level Mathematics, and any two from Chemistry, Physics and Biology

(B) Required subjects for national standardized examinations offered in your home country You must take the following required subjects.
Course AMC and IMAC -U AMB Required Subjects Mathematics and Science (both Physics and Chemistry) Mathematics and Science (any 2 from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology)

*If a required subject is unavailable due to the examination system in your country, take an examination for an equivalent subject. In such cases, provide a written explanation of the circumstances. *Caution: If you are unable to submit a test score certificate by the submission deadline, you will not be able to apply. *Chinese applicants who are unable to submit national standardized exam results by the deadline, may submit their results from a provincial or city exam instead. *Applicants from Turkey and Eastern Europe are advised to take the SAT. *Turkish and Eastern European students may submit results from tests other than the LYS exam, for example Math Olympics, high school examinations etc. In such cases, ask your FGL Course for permission before applying. (C) Required subjects for the Japan Student Services Organization Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (JASSO EJU) You must take the following required subjects and obtain a score equal or superior to that required by your desired FGL Course.
Course AMC IMAC -U AMB Required Subjects Mathematics: Course 2 Science: Physics and Chemistry Mathematics: Course 2 Science: any two from Physics, Chemistry and Biology Required Score Science: 150 or higher; Mathematics: 150 or higher Science and Mathematics combined: 300 or higher Science and Mathematics combined: 260 or higher

*In general, you should take the examination the year before FY 2012. *The EJU may be taken in either Japanese or English. Japanese language test is not required. 2) English Proficiency Test (A) You must undergo the TOEFL-iBT, TOEFL-PBT or IELTS (Academic Module) and submit your scores in the required subjects. Group test TOEFL-ITP is not accepted. Your score must be equal or superior to that required by your desired FGL course.
Course AMC IMAC-U AMB TOEFL-iBT 79 or higher TOEFL-PBT 550 or higher IELTS 6.0 or higher

*In general, you should submit a score from a test dated March 2012 or later. (B) If you attended for four years or longer a middle/high school where the main language used was English, you may present a letter from your principal in place of a TOEFL score etc. (C) If you are unable to take the TOEFL test, or wish to submit a score from a TOEFL-equivalent English proficiency test, please contact Tohoku University before applying and submit the documents requested by the university.

Start your application

First complete the online application, and then submit all application documents by email 1) Please see "http://www.fgl.tohoku.ac.jp/?section=undergraduate-programs&page=entrance-procedure" Required input: Desired Course, Applicant Information, Education, Basic Qualifications, Application Requirements, Location of 2nd Stage Screening, Scholarship Preference, Dormitory Preference and Other Important Information
2) File Attachments by E-mail: Please send the documents by e-mail as file attachments to: fgl-exam@bureau.tohoku.ac.jp. Documents written in languages other than English must be accompanied by a Japanese or English translation. Required file: Photograph, Statement of Reasons for Applying, Proof of Graduation/Enrollment Certificate, Academic Transcript, Certificates for Application Requirements (Part 1 and Part 2), Proof of Nationality 3) After Tohoku University has inspected the submitted materials, applicants will be issued an Examination Number.
