Prepared By: Teacher Joy

Lesson 13
Informal Essay
The informal essay is written mainly for enjoyment. This is not to say that it cannot be informative or persuasive; however, it is less a formal statement than a relaxed expression of opinion, observation, humor or pleasure. A good informal essay has a relaxed style but retains a strong structure, though that structure may be less rigid than in a formal paper. The informal essay tends to be more personal than the formal, even though both may express subjective opinions. In a formal essay the writer is a silent presence behind the words, while in an informal essay the writer is speaking directly to the reader in a conversational style. If you are writing informally, try to maintain a sense of your own personality. o not worry about sounding academic, but avoid sloppiness.

This techni"ue is very effective, but you should notify the reader when you intend to proceed and when you intend to look back in time. b.+ /reation of the suspense. /ertainly, you have got to create the suspense in order to attract your readers, to make them stay, let them to continue reading your paper. The most important point in the creation of the suspense is the creation of uncertainty. ,ou should create exhilarating and thrilling atmosphere of something unknown, something unexpected and even unpredictable. This techni"ue, named foreshadowing is one of the most widely used techni"ues in the writing of the fiction stories. It can also be applied in writing the informal essays. uring this process you use another techni"ue# withholding. 0very time when the readers ask themselves various "uestions on the progress of the events in your essay, you withhold the information. 3. Narrowing of the plot. Imagine that you are getting on the train and your friend is chatting with another person about his work. 1e have got two separate but interconnected stories.

0very event in our life comprises several different stories that can be interconnected with others. If you can look at the different stories and distinguish them, yet at the same comprehend the integrity of the story and the reader can see how the story unfolds, then you can use them as an additional techni"ue in your informal essay.
