Fleischmanns Community Garden Ready to break Ground

The O'Connor Foundation has made a grant to Mark Project for the Fleischmanns Community Garden, initiated by Fleischmanns First. The project will now move into implementation mode with Nicole E. Day Gray, proprietor of AgriForaging, Inc. and organic gardening expert, at the helm. The pending DEP proposal is expected to be acted upon shortly. In the meantime, Nicole and Billy Alison, Mark Building Specialist, are planning the scope of the project and the building of the ten 4x8x10 foot plots. The application for plot keeping will be available shortly. In addition, plot keepers will receive a menu of organic seeds from which they will choose five packs that will be provided free of charge. The project will be put out for bids in the next two weeks with construction and assignment of the raised plots to begin in early May and completion within two weeks. Workshops on planting, growing and tending the raised gardens will be held throughout May with planting to being the third week of May, weather permitting. So get those green thumbs ready!

Fleischmanns Forum on Broadband Expansion

Over 25 people, a good mix of Halcott Center and Fleischmanns residents, attended the fourth Fleischmanns Forum on April 6th. Glen Faulkner, Margaretville Telephone Company General Manager and Dom Bramley MTC Comptroller were present and gave an overview of the company and the new broadband Build out which is targeted for Halcott Center, but will also enable Fleischmanns users to upgrade to a faster internet speed if they so desire. The MARK Project in coordination with Western Catskills Revitalization Corporation will be working with MTC to survey those living in the UN-served areas of Halcott Center, Roxbury, Middletown, Gilboa and Conesville. The survey is likely to be released by the end of April with a late May return date. It is critical that residents return these surveys as that will help MTC determine the exact locations for the build out based on the number of end users. Residents should also know that by filling out and returning the surveys they are not committing to any service provided by MTC. It is simply to gauge interest and need for broadband specific areas.

Page 2 - FLEISCHMANNS FLYER - April 2013 LIBRARY SEEKS BOOK DO ATIO S FOR MEMORIAL DAY SALE Preparations continue for the eventful Memorial Day Weekend; Skene Library will be hosting its annual book and tag sale on Saturday May 25, as part of the large number of events that week-end. We are still looking for donations of good used books, CDs, books on CD, and DVDs for the sale. (No textbooks please!) Books may be dropped off at the Library any time during regular hours. In some cases, Skene receives valuable additions to its own collection via such donations--otherwise the funds raised help Skene fulfill its mission to provide library services to all patrons in the local area. This fundraiser is particularly important in light of extremely tight State & Local government budgets. Please help make this fund-raiser a rousing success.

In the days before today's motel-style accommodations, Fleischmanns boasted many traditional hotels. (Only two of these remain: The Palace and The Regis.) The Empire Hotel stood where today's Delaware Court is located. Note the spelling of Fleischmanns--there was no 'spell-check' back then.

The Main Street Fair will be chock a block with a multitude of craft and whatnot vendors offering everything from flea market finds, jewelry, to macram , and there will be all sorts of wonderful food offerings from all our local establishments . And, dont miss our incredible entertainment line up at the Gazebo. Cat Blum, has once again graciously volunteered to sing and perform, as well as, emcee introductions for our other great musical lineup of performers such as the Catskill Mountain Boys, and Connie Mohar & Jeanne Palmer. Come & plan to make a day of it. Dont forget your 50-50 and get your Blood pressure check at the Margaretville Mobile Health Unit. See you at the Fair!.

2013 Flower Barrel Campaign & Were Thinkin Spring! Winter has passed and we are Thinkin Spring and planning for our traditional Summer Flower Barrels along Main Street. So lets dust off those garden tools and put them to use! We traditionally plant around 30 barrels and place them throughout the Village. Our planting date this year will be Friday, May 24th just before Memorial Day Weekend. We will at the Gazebo around 10 AM for instruction and supplies. Last year we received a very generous donation of plants in addition to the money donated by many of you to the Flower Barrel Campaign. We need your help again this year! A new barrel with potting soil and flowers cost approximately $65. Just soil and flowers to refurbish an existing barrel runs approximately $35 each. Please consider sponsoring a barrel or contribute to the campaign by sending a check made out to the Village of Fleischmanns, PO Box 339 Fleischmanns, NY, 12430, noting it is for the flower barrels. For more information or to help with the planting, please contact Pam Grocholl, 254-4325.

Fleischmanns Mansion Furniture and Artifacts

The new owners of the Julius Fleischmanns house were generous enough to donate furniture and architectural artifacts to Fleischmanns First for our annual Memorial Day Street Fair sale. The Fleischmanns House was built at the turn of the last century and was at one time the hotel run by Molly Goldbergs family. So who knows, the donated oak chairs, tables etc might have been those used by a 20th Century millionaire or a famous television star. Some of the furniture is in need of loving carewouldnt you be if left unattended for decades? Come out on April 28th and help rejuvenate the chairs, tables, fireplace pieces. Heres your opportunity to get a special preview look but you have to be willing to help us with elbow grease! See you Sunday, April 28 at 10am at the Fleischmanns Theater.

Letter from Mayor Pascarella .. Dear Fleischmanns Community, I know most people are as happy as I am to see spring finally arrive after the hardy winter from which we just emerged. It is finally time to get outside and shape up our yards, and that goes for the Village as well. There will be a beautification project underway soon in the space around the gazebo. There will also be several stream and road rebuilding projects starting as soon as permitting and weather allow. I want to thank all who are working hard to make Fleischmanns a more attractive place. The Memorial Day Street Fair is just around the corner and it is great that we will be putting our best foot forward. See you all outside! Springfully Yours, Todd Pascarella, Mayor
