Snow Globe Writing

Tis the season for some holiday story writing! We are going to be
creating a Snow Globe Story title ______________ in a Snow Globe
Put an interesting character inside of your snow globe.
For example:
Book character (Katniss, Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, etc.)
Animal
Holiday character (Santa, Reindeer, Snowman, Easter Bunny,
etc.)
Fairy Tale Character (Snow White, Robin Hood, etc.)
Historical Figure (George Washington, Albert Einstein, etc.)
You will write an OUTSTANDING story telling how your
character ended up getting stuck in the snow globe using all the
information from your packet.
Lastly, you will create a snow globe:
Cut pattern out
Use lots of color! (you may want to use glitter inside)
Be sure to draw your character with LOTS of detail
Add background to the snow globe do NOT leave it blank!
Be prepared to share your snow globe stories

Describe Your Character

Describe the Setting

Look at these setting descriptions that HINT at the setting by showing what
the character feels, smells, hears, thinks, and sees. Infer where you think the setting
is taking place.
Story 1
The automatic doors opened swiftly as Jade strode in. She glanced quickly at the
cluster of signs and pressed on down the wide polished corridor. Ahead of her a set of
double doors flew open and a trolley, pushed by five concerned faces, passed rapidly
by. The smell of antiseptic caught at the back of her throat. Pushing through the
doors at the end of the corridor, she emerged into a brightly lit room. Rows of plastic
seats groaned with injured people. Where was Manny? The call had been brief. All
she knew was that Manny was here somewhere

Story 2
Sadie thrust the ticket into the mans hand. Half-torn he returned it and pulled open
the door. Her eyes narrowed as she stepped forward urgently into the dimly-lit room.
Stale popcorn collapsed under her feet. She felt her way down the narrow aisle. She
had agreed to meet Gerry somewhere in the middle. The front was too close, whilst
the back meant you spent most of your time staring at the hairstyle in front. A young
couple stood up to let her pass, their coats fell from their laps and were lost in the dark
alley beneath their folding seats.
WHERE IS THIS TAKING PLACE? ___________________________________________
Story 3
The vegetables gleamed under the lighting as special offers swung giddily on their
strings from the ceiling. He inched forward, keeping himself well hidden behind the
woman whose child rocked in the metal cage provided at the back of the trolley. As
they passed the cheese and milk a cool draught caught the back of his neck, sending a
shiver down his spine
WHERE IS THIS STORY TAKING PLACE? ______________________________________

Story 4
The warm dusty draught flapped at her coat, revealing the lining and causing her to
pull it tight around her. She thrust her ticket into the metal slit and strode forward
confidently. The dull whirring of the escalators carried her down, lost in the
confusion of posters advertising West end shows and cheap phone calls. She thought
she saw a familiar face passing upwards to her right and stared back to see if she were
right .

Now it is your turn to use HINTS to describe your setting which is the inside
of your snow globe.
SIGHT (see)

SOUND (hear)

SMELL

TOUCH movement/action

Remember, try not to tell your reader directly make them have to use their
imagination to visualize it!

Good Endings

A memorable ending is the LAST paragraph in your story. These sentences should tell the reader the lesson your
character learned or how their life changed because of what happened in the story.

Please practice using 3 of these endings to end your snow globe story.
1. I/he/she will never forget because
I will never forget getting lost at Adventure land because I was so terrified that I would never find my family
again. While it didnt happen the way I had planned, the day certainly turned into and adventure!
Ex.______________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________
2. The lesson I/he/she learned was
The lesson Alice learned was that it is not nice to say shut up to your friends, even if they are being totally
annoying! There is always a nicer way to let others know your feelings. Next time, she will stick with
something that can both fix the problem and keep her and Kevins friendship strong!
Ex.______________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________

mayonnaise do not!
Ex.______________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________
5. Be careful when you

Be careful when you wish for a little brother! Oh sure, they can be cute, adorable, and the sweetest little
bundle of joy, but most of the time they are NOT!
Ex.______________________________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________
_________________________________________________________________________

Choose the one that you think is the BEST for your story.

Dialogue
Good writers use dialogue, or talking, to help keep their writing interesting.
However, they dont want their writing to become too full of talking otherwise
the reader will end up missing out on description, thoughts, and background
knowledge.

PLEASE DO NOT USEPOP CORN DIALOGUE!

Example:
Hi he said.
Hello, She said.
There is a lot of snow in here dont you think he said.
I dont like it, she said.
How can we get out of here? he asked.
I think we will be in here forever, She said.

PLEASE DO MIXED DIALOGUE!

Example:
Jack stumbled around, there was lots of snow, he could barely see. All of
the sudden he noticed something or someone.
Hello? he shouted into the snow. Emerging from the sea of white, came
a lovely girl with long, silky brown hair.
Hi, she replied. The snow on her hair was beginning to melt and began
dripping down her forehead.
There sure is a lot of snow in here! John mumbled, it was all he could
think of to say, he felt his cheeks turning red, why was he always so
embarrassed to talk to girls?!
There is, the girl agreed, I really dont like it in here the girl stated
and tapped her fingers on the glass dome. Jack thought of something witty to
say, something that would make him sound brave, manly, helpful, but all that
came out was I wonder how we can get out of here.
Were going to be in here forever! the girl moaned as she placed her
forehead on the glass. Great, thought Jack, that really helped her feel better.

YOUR TURN!
Create a POP CORN dialogue then turn it into a MIXED dialogue.
