Description of the Course:

This is a course that is meant to teach you how to read and write the Arabic letters so that you can graduate to the next important phase of your Arabic learning; communicating in Arabic. There is much more to learning the Arabic letter system than just memorizing letter forms. Mastery of the Arabic letter system takes lots of practice and step by step progression. Those who take the time to learn the Arabic letters with precision will develop a foundation to later build upon. There are over fifty forms that you need to master to recognize Arabic writing and pronounce Arabic words correctly. This course teaches you all of these forms in a programmed and systematic fashion building gradually letter by letter without randomly throwing letters at you that you havent seen before. Learning the Arabic letters is more than just learning to recognize letters in a word. Learning the Arabic letters is also about being able to pronounce letters correctly, write them, recognize them and write from dictation. This means that learning the Arabic letters is also about developing skills; listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. In this course you will be practicing the letters by using all of the four language skills. You will watch a video about each Arabic letter and accompanied form, you will write the letters yourself, connect letters to make words, listen and record yourself pronouncing these letters as well as learn key greetings and conversational phrases that will allow you to use the letters in words to convey meaning. Finally, you will get feedback from trained instructors on your progress through graded assignments. The goal by the end of this course is nothing less than mastery of all the forms you need to begin learning Arabic to communicate.

Goals and Objectives of the Course: 1. Goal 1: Write the Arabic letters and related forms in legible Arabic handwriting. Objective: Students will watch videos for each of the Arabic letters and then practice writing the letters by downloading the accompanying worksheets and submitting them as assignments. 2. Goal 2: Read Arabic words with correct pronunciation. Objective: Students will practice reading Arabic words and letter combinations of Arabic letters and then record themselves reading these words. Students will then submit their recordings for evaluation. 3. Goal 3: Listen to greetings and introductory phrases in Arabic. Objective: Students will listen to a series of greetings and introductory phrases in Arabic and then will reproduce these greetings by recording them and submitting them as assignments. 4. Goal 4: Build a preliminary vocabulary set in Arabic. Objective: Students will memorize vocabulary words for each module and practice reading and writing these words. Evaluation and assessment: Students will be graded based on the assignments that they submit. These assignments will become part of a student portfolio that will display each students ability to use Arabic letters. Syllabus:
