Compare
and 50% is borderline. Cooling and heating efficiency scores are based on the model's AEER (Annual Energy Efficiency Ratio) and ACOP (Annual!Coefficient!of Performance), which is a measure of operational efficiency that factors in standby power consumption when the unit is not in use. For this reason, we don't directly score the standby power consumption, but it is listed for your information.
Airflow scores!are based on the range of!airflow on the lowest to highest fan speed settings. Ideally, air conditioners should have a gentle airflow on low settings and a powerful airflow on high. The wider the range of airflows, the better the score.! Noise!levels are supplied by the manufacturer. They are broadly comparative but note that different manufacturers may measure these value slightly differently. Annual running costs! We calculate how much each model costs to deliver 3000kWh of full cooling and 3000kWh of heating per year when running at its measured maximum capacity, with the remainder of the year in standby mode (based on electricity costs of 26 cents/kWh). Standby costs add only a few dollars a year, but it may still be a good idea to unplug your air conditioner (if possible) when its not in use for long periods. In other words, we calculate how much it would cost for each model to deliver a set amount of cooling and heating energy. This is not the same as calculating how long it would cost to run each model for a set amount of time, since if one model was more efficient or powerful than another, it would cool (or heat) the room faster and in practice you wouldn't need to run it as long (or rather, it wouldn't run itself as long). It's fairer to calculate how much electricity each one needs to deliver the same cooling and heating effect. Also, it's hard to calculate the cost of running an inverter air conditioner for a set time (e.g. 24 hours a day for four months) since these models adjust their output
according to the room temperature and thermostat setting, so power input will change over time. While we've based our calculation on a reasonably typical usage, the annual running costs are only an indicative comparison. Your mileage will vary depending on your house, local climate, electricity price and how much you use the air conditioner. Price!Suggested retail price as of April 2013, or the best retail price we could find. Actual prices can vary considerably from the suggested retail price.!Note that some of the newest models may not yet have a suggested retail price, so we've quoted an indicative price for the previous versions of those models.
How we test
Air conditioners sold in Australia must be tested to the Australian standard AS/NZS 3823.2 and registered in a government database at energyrating.gov.au, to ensure
they meet the Minimum Energy Performance Standard (MEPS) and qualify for a star rating label.! We source model data directly from manufacturers and cross-check it against the government registration database to bring you information on as many current and new-release models as possible. Scores are calculated in a similar way as in previous CHOICE tests, but cant be directly compared with previous tests as the data is sourced differently. We have eliminated ease of use testing as it would be unmanageable for so many models; in the past we found most models good or at least OK in this respect. Use our! What to Look For!tips to choose a model with a good remote.
