New York State Board of Parole 1220 Washington Ave, Building 2 Albany, New York 12226-2050 Re: Samuel Ayala (#78A0767), Willie Profitt (#78A0768) & James Walls (#78A0766) To the members of the Parole Board: We are writing to you to urge in the strongest possible terms that you deny the upcoming request for parole of the above-captioned inmates, who were convicted and sentenced in 1978 for the 1977 rape and murder of Sheila Watson and Bonnie Minter. Jason Minter, the elder child of one of the deceased, is our constituent; he operates the Indian Road Caf, a popular restaurant that has become a beacon of hospitality, community-building, culture and dining in Inwood, a diverse residential neighborhood in Northern Manhattan. Ayala, Profitt and Walls were sentenced to 25-to-life, the maximum available sentence at the time. In delivering the sentence, the Honorable Richard J. Daronco stated Two innocent womens lives were cruelly and wantonly taken by the Defendants in this case. All three Defendants share in the guilt in that none of them tried to stop or in any way curtail the activities of the others. The brutality shown was incredible. These were acts of terror, not only against these two unarmed, defenseless, helpless women, but at times in the presence of four very young children. These were acts of prolonged and deliberate violence. Two lives have been taken and, in addition, four young lives have been permanently, emotionally scarred My only regret is that there is not a more severe sentence allowable which I might impose because I, without hesitation, would do so." As the three men convicted of these crimes have not only expressed no remorse for same, but in some cases even have begun to deny their participation in these crimes, we see no reason to grant a request for parole. Mr. Minter was six years old at the time of the murders, when he tried in vain to save his mother and his friends mother, and listened with his sister and friends in the other room while their mothers were brutalized and killed. He has described the enduring horror of those highly traumatic events, exacerbated by the three perpetrators biennial attempts at parole. We encourage you to do all within your power to spare these victims this grief. Sincerely,
