What to do if you can't access your overclocking options verclocking in Windows !eating and cooling "ooling the case #ifferent ways to overclock "ooling your motherboard !ow to operate the fans in Bios $tep by step guide to !ow to overclock your "P% When things go horribly wrong %nlocking a $empron's multiplier guide $ummary &y personnel 'ecommendations
System Configuration
2ven when your computer is sat there doing nothing( their could be over 34 programs running in the background sapping the heck out of your P"! $o as you can imagine( it is very important to disable these programs for optimal performance) To see what I mean hit "T'5 6,5T 6 #252T2 then press the processes tab) This will show you how really busy your "P% really is) /ista owners will have on average 94 to :4 programs running in the background)
This tells you how many programs are running in the background
This is how much of the "P% is being used at any one time) 7ow that said and done( let me show you how to deactivate all of the dead wood in one go)
/. The $ystem "onfiguration Windows should pop up) 0. The first thing to do in the $ystem "onfiguration is to deactivate all
the unwanted programs that are no longer needed to be running in the background) $o the first place we're going to go to is to the $tartup tab)
&ost if not all can be unticked) ,lways at least have your anti;virus running for protection
1. ,s you can see all the bo*es are ticked as default and what this
basically means is that all the ticked programs are running in the background) 7ow to tell you the truth( most of these programs can be unticked because they are not simply needed and take up precious resources) !owever I would recommend to keep on your anti virus and important drivers) 2verything else can be turned off) nce you've unticked what you don't need( click apply)
7ote? If you want to turn off some of the &icrosoft's services( here is a few that you can turn off safely)
"ffline #iles 3unless you4re using "ffline #ile %ync5 Tablet PC &n ut %er'ice 3unless you ha'e a tablet PC5 Terminal %er'ices 6indows %earch 3&f you ha'e already disabled inde7ing5 #a7 3unless you4re using a fa7 modem5 nce you have turned off what you don't need( click apply)
8.
9. While we are still in the $ystem "onfiguration( 1ou now want head to
the Boot tab then select ,dvanced options)
"hanging the B$umber of rocessors< to the ma*imum number will make your P" boot up us using all the "P% cores therefore aiding boot up times
ptions) In there you want to tick the number of processors and simply select the number of cores you have) $o if you have dual core "P% for e*ample( you would select @) If you've got a -uad core you then would select 9 and so on)
;.
A)
That is everything you can do in your $ystem "onfiguration) ,lthough after making all these changes I would recommend rebooting your P" even if your P" doesn't prompt you to)
Performance Options
When you first install Windows you'll have all the visual effects on as default) ,nd although they look pretty( they can take a considerable amount of your computer's resources) #epending on which $ <operating system= your using( this could make or brake it) If your using Windows /ista? I would recommend turning some the visual effects off( especially on the lower end systems) !owever if your using .P( the performance will be less impressive but if like me( and you believe every ounce of performance is crucial( then deactivate them all)
/. >rom in there scroll down and again select the main title Performance
Information and Tools)
on
$how thumbnails instead of icons ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; %se drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;; %se visual styles on windows and buttons Turning this one off will deactivate Window ,ero's fancy graphics) I personally keep it on but for optimal performance turn it off 7
Anti-virus
7ot a lot of people know about this but if you turn of the anti;virus before benchmarking and gaming( this will give the "P% less to think about and therefore can focus on the matter at hand <benchmarking8Daming= ,nother thing to be aware of is some anti;virus programs use more "P% power than others) The main culprit believe it or not is 7orton ,nt;virus) 7orton seems to use more of the "P% than any other ,nti;virus on the market) &y recommendation is to ditch 7orton and move to ,/D anti;virus) ,/D uses less clock cycles and the best bit of all( it's completely free) 1ou can download ,/D for free here)
I recommend ,/D) It is free and it uses less "P% clock cycles than most commercial anti virus software)
&ake sure you check out the B%tilitiesG $ection) There's tons of cool apps and >eatures like *ame !ooster that will further enhance your P"'s performance!
,ll you have to do is hit scan and ,dvance $ystem "are will do all the hard work for you) It should take about a minute or so to finish depending on siFe of hardrive and what's installed on it) nce ,dvance $ystem "are has finished scanning( Cust press the repair button and that's it)
CCleaner
,nother fantastic program that's worth checking out is ""leaner) ""leaner is wonderfully simple but at the same time Cust as powerful at what it does) What ""leaner does is clean your P" from top to bottom) It will clean all your cookies( history files and many more unwanted stuff that slows down and clutters your P") 1ou can download ""leaner here) To use ""leaner start it up and make sure everything is ticked apart from ,uto complete form history) Then click ,nalyse)
Be sure to check out ""leaner's other features) It can be -uite a handy cool
!it ,nalyFe
It'll run for a minute or so depending on how much BcrapG you have on your computer) nce it's finished simply click 'un "leaner)
Drivers
We should all know this one) Aeep all the drivers up to date) !owever you will get a lot of brownie points for tinkering around with your graphics's card driver to improve your P"'s performance) Turning everything like ,ntialiasing to performance mode will hike it up no end) !owever( I never use the graphics drivers for tuning my graphics cards) I find them -uite limited and you can't really push them to their fullest) To find out what I use to tweak the hell out of them and what techni-ue the professionals use( pick up a copy of verclocking your Draphics card and more revealed) It'll show you how to send your graphics card into overdrive! The book will teach you techni-ues like overclocking( unlocking pipelines( flashing the Bios( "hanging the voltage and a tons more! >or more information click here)
10
,nyway))) back to the drivers) If your not sure what drivers need updating( you want to check out #river ,gent) What #river ,gent will do is scan all your computer's components and tell which drivers need updating) It only takes @ minutes to do) !owever( scanning your drivers and telling you which ones need updating is free( There is a charge for actually downloading them from their site) But if your a bit cheeky like me( Cust get your free scan results and get the drivers yourself) To visit #river ,gent to get your <free= scan( click here)
T&P. If you have a 7vidia graphics card( always opt for beta driver! The
beta drivers are e*actly the same as the official drivers but with added optimiFations for the latest games( applications and programs)
Prefetch
2very time you boot up a program for the first time( a file is instantly created to and is placed in a file called Prefetch) The reason why this file is created( is so the ne*t time you boot up that program( it will boot up -uicker) 7ow this sounds great at first but over time your Prefetch will become so saturated that it will start to have the reverse affect and actually start to slow your computer down)
-= To clean your Prefetch simply go to the $tart and type Prefetch in the
Windows search bar)
/=
This is what your prefetch should look like) $imply select everything <,nd I mean everything= and right click on the selected and then select delete)
11
Uninstalling
, fast !ardrive is a empty hardrive) $o if you've got an hardrive full to the brim( delete the programs and games you don't need to speed up your !ardrive)
T&P. If there is any games you want to delete but you don't want to
lose your saves points) $imply save the game save files( then delete the game8s) This way you can regain gigs of space that otherwise your games would be taking up but yet you don't have to worry about losing your position in your games H;=
If you have noticed that game performance has diminished or that applications are loading slower than they once did on your P"( you may want to give this tip a try) By default( Windows does not clear the contents of the paging file <the area of the hard disk Windows reserves to act as e*tra ',& memory=) ver time it can become fragmented and less efficient) ne solution is to reset this file every so often( ensuring a fresh start for your applications and games) To reset the 6indows age file=
properties and from in here go to the left;hand panel( choose advanced system settings)
/. "lick the 'advanced' tab( then under the performance heading choose
settings)
0. "hoose the advanced tab again( then under the virtual memory
heading click change)
1. %ncheck automatically manage paging file siFe for all drives at the
top)
2. !ighlight the drive that contains your paging file) $elect the 'custom'
siFe option below)
8. "hange the minimum and ma*imum page file siFe to '4' and click set) 9. 'estart your computer)
13
:. 7ow going back to your paging file properties window( highlight the
drive that contained your page file) "hoose the system managed siFe option and click set) "onfirm the overwrite and click A)
-.
Do to start then computer) 'ight click on your main hardrive and select properties)

Defragging
The last thing you want to do now defrag your hardrive) This will help to pack everything together and improve hardrive performance) 7ow I can't personally stand Window's defragger but don't worry( because I'm going to show where to get a much better one than Windows own shoddy attempt) ,uslogics #isk defrag is it's name and I think you'll find it's -uick and easy to use and it seems to do -uite a good Cob as well) To can download ,uslogics's defragger here) 0ust install ,uslogics's defragger( hit ne*t and off you go) ,uslogics's defragger is faster than /ista's own efforts) 1ou get a constant progress report therefore giving you an idea how long it will take and how fragmented your drive is
>or optimal performance( always at least have J:K free space on your hardrive) This will give your defragger enough room to move your files around for defragmenting If you would like to further optimiFe Windows for the best possible performance( my latest book /ista $peed $ecrets will take you through step step to fine tune and optimiFe Windows) ,s you've probably gathered it's written for /ista so I wouldn't recommend it for .P but this has allowed me to solely focus on /ista to make it a super fast and 15
responsive operating system) $o if your P" is struggling to play /ista or it's crashing and freeFing all the time( then check it out) >or more information on /ista $peed $ecrets click here) 7ow that we have tuned up Windows for optimal performance and stability( we can now go into Bios and I'll reveal how to activate ma*imiFe your hidden bios options for e*treme performance))))
