!"ve written much about #dward Snowden, his bac $story, and the %uestions that surround him. &ut here, ! want to discuss the aftermath, because no matter how you view Snowden and what he has done, he is now bein' used as a symbol.

(a e a hero who has bro en throu'h the veil of secrecy, who"s stolen the 'olden e''s from the 'oose"s eyrie, who"s escaped...

)nd put him throu'h the meat 'rinder of the press.

Raise him up, put him down, praise him, e*coriate him, threaten him, isolate him, adore him, and sooner or later he be'ins to fade from view.

+is profile, his public persona has been chopped up so many different ways into so many disparate pieces that, eventually, the symbol of him no lon'er carries any real force.

,eanwhile, the -S) and the Surveillance State continue on. (hey weather the storm. .espite the e*plodin' scandal and the fall$out, and even thou'h certain modes of

collectin' information may be reduced, new strate'ies emer'e.

(herefore, the Surveillance State becomes even more powerful than it was.

Snowden roc ed the boat, but the boat has been repaired. !t sails on with even 'reater assurance.

)nd re'ardless of how the public responds to Snowden and the -S), it is only a partial response, because the true aims of the Surveillance State are a mystery to most people.

Surveillance is comin' at us from all an'les. /hips, drones, (S) chec points, smart meters, bac $doored electronic products, video cameras, spyin' home appliances0 our phone calls and emails and eystro es and product purchases are recorded.

(he 'overnment and its allied corporations will now whatever they want to now about us.

1hat then2

1hat happens when all nations are blan eted from stem to stern with surveillance2

Smart meters 'ive us one clue. 3ublic utilities, actin' on 'overnment orders, will be able to allot electricity in amounts and at times it wishes to. (his is leadin' to an overarchin' plan for ener'y distribution to the entire population.

/laimin' shorta'es and limited options, 'overnments will essentially be redistributin' wealth, in the form of ener'y, under a collectivist model.

-ational health insurance plans 4such as 5bamacare6 offer another clue. Such plans re%uire every citi7en to be assi'ned a medical !. pac a'e, which is a de facto identity card. !n the medical arena, this means cradle$to$'rave trac in'.

Surveillance inevitably leads to placin' every individual under systems of control. !t isn"t 8ust 9we"re watchin' you9 or 9we"re stampin' out dissent.9 !t"s 9we"re directin' your participation in life.9

)s a security analyst in the private sector once told me, 91hen you can see what every employee is doin', when you have it all at your fin'ertips, you naturally move on to thin in' about how you can control those patterns and flows of movement and activity. !t"s irresistible. :ou loo at your employees as pieces on a board. (he only %uestion is, what 'ame do you want to play with them29

#very such apparatus is ruled, from the top, by /entral 3lanners. 1hen it"s an entire nation, upper$echelon technocrats revel in the idea of blueprintin', mappin', chartin', and re'ulatin' the flows of all 'oods and services and people, 9for the common 'ood.9

1ater, food, medicine, land use, transportation$$$they all become items of a networ ed system that chooses who 'ets what and when, and who can travel where, and under what conditions.

(his is the wet dream of technocrats. (hey believe they are savin' the world while playin' a fascinatin' 'ame of multidimensional chess.

)s new technolo'ies are discovered and come on line, the planners decide how they will be utili7ed and for whose benefit.

!n order to implement such a far$reachin' ob8ective, with minimal resistance from the 'lobal population, manufactured crises are unleashed which persuade the masses that the planet is under threat and needs 9the wise ones9 to rescue it and them.

1e watch 4and fi'ht in6 wars and more wars, each one e*acerbated and even invented. 1e see 4planned6 famine. 1e are told about desperate shorta'es and a fryin' #arth. 1e are presented with phony epidemics that are falsely promoted as scour'es.

(he only response, we are led to believe, is more humane control over the population.

5n top of that, we are fed an unendin' stream of propa'anda aimed at convincin' us that 9the 'reat 'ood for the 'reatest number9 is the only humane and acceptable principle of e*istence. )ll prior systems of belief are outmoded. 1e now better now. 1e must be 'ood and ind and 'enerous to everyone at all times.

;nder this %uasi$reli'ious banner, which has 'reat emotional appeal, appears (he 3lan. 5ur leaders allocate and withhold on the basis of their 'reater nowled'e. 1e comply. 1e willin'ly comply, because we are enlisted in a universal army of altruistic concern.

(his is a classic bait and switch. 1e are tau'ht to believe that service for the 'reater 'ood is an unchallen'eable 'oal and credo. )nd then, later, we find out it has been hi8ac ed to institute more power over us, in every way.

(he coordinated and networ ed surveillance of #arth and its people is fed into al'orithms that spit out solutions. (his much food will 'o here0 that much water will 'o there0 here there will be medical care0 there medical care will be severely rationed. (hese people will be permitted to travel. (hose people will be confined to their cities and towns.

#very essential of life$$$mana'ed with on$off switches, and the conse%uences will play out.

)n incredibly comple* system of interloc in' decisions will be hailed as messianic.

Surveillance0 plannin'0 control.

(he surveillance is e*panded, not because we are constantly under threat and must be protected from terrorists, but because we can then be labeled and entered on to 10 billion s%uares of the 'ame board, to be moved around or held in place.

(his is the vision.

!t isn"t ours. !t never was. &ut we are not consulted.

!nstead we are made witness to watershed events< the 1==> 5 lahoma /ity bombin'0

the 1==? attac on the 1orld (rade /enter0 the 2001 assault on the (rade /enter and the 3enta'on. (hese ops paralleled the unleashin' of better and more far$ran'in' methods of surveillance.

1e are profiled down to the threads on our clothin' and .-) in our cells. &ut what is our profile of the technocrats and their bosses2

(hey are divorced from human life. (hey live in a vacuum. (hey ta e pleasure from that vacuum.

!n 1=@2, ! interviewed &ill 3erry, who had 8ust left his 8ob as 3R chief at Aawrence Aivermore Aabs, where scientists desi'n nuclear weapons. 3erry had been 'iven the ind of 8ob 3R people lon' for. &ut one day, when he passed the des of a researcher and listened to his complaints about bud'et limitations, 3erry said, 9Aisten, )merica already has the means to blow up the whole planet ei'ht times. 1hat more do you need29

(he researcher loo ed up at him with a 'enuinely pu77led e*pression. +e said, 9:ou don"t understand, &ill. (his is a problem in physics.9

!n the same detached sense, the technocrats who want to calculate and direct our future, move by move, minute by minute, see us as components of a comple* and very interestin' problem.

:es, they indeed e*pect to e*ercise power and control. &ut they also live in an abstraction. (hey deal their answers from that realm. (hey e*ercise cool passion.

(hey see, for e*ample, that not every sin'le twitch of thou'ht of every person on earth is yet mapped, so they want to finish constructin' the means by which they can chart those 9missin' elements.9 (hey want to complete the formula.

(hey view their research as a wholly natural implication of the mathematics they can manipulate. (hey swim in technolo'y and they want to e*tend its architecture. (o abandon the pro'ram would be tantamount to denyin' their own intelli'ence. (hey climb the mountain because it is there.

(hey do perceive that one factor does not fit their al'orithms< the free individual. !t"s the wild card.

(herefore, they are compelled to analy7e freedom and brea it down into .-) functions and brain processes. (hey assume, because they must, that the free individual is an illusory idea that flows from some older confi'uration of synaptic transmission, at a time in our evolution when we needed it. &ut now, they suppose, the en'ineerin' of human activity and thou'ht has superseded such %uaint notions. -ow we all can be trac ed, traced, and studied on a different and wider scale. -ow we can be seen for what we really are< a hive.

(herefore, we must be instructed, within ti'ht limits, about our various functions.

!"m reminded of a statement attributed to -obel Aaureate, )lfred S7ent$Bior'i< 9!n my search for the secret of life, ! have ended up with atoms and electrons, which have no life at all. Somewhere alon' the line, life has run throu'h my fin'ers. So, in my old a'e, ! am retracin' my steps...9

(oday"s technocrats will admit no such disappointment or e*istential crisis. (hey flourish with 'reat optimism as they desi'n the future world and its sin'le society. !f they run out of pieces of their pu77le to study, they"ll try to trac the motion of every atom and electron and %uar in the universe. (hey"ll deli'ht in it.

Cnowin' all this, we now the terms of the war we are in.

(he /entral 3lanners have an e%uation< 9freeDuncontrolledDdan'erous.9

&y the 'ross terms of that e%uation, they lump us in with thu's and murderers and terrorists. (hey even see the normal functionin' of the brain as a threat, as an intrinsically defective process, and they have lon' since decided that or'an must be corrected with dru's and electroma'netic inteventions.

1e, on the other hand, must assert, in every way possible, that freedom is real and inviolable, and we must bac that up with our actions.

1hen individual freedom is no lon'er discussed in 'reat depth by people who should now better, when it is left to wither on the vine, many pro'rams and structures are built to ta e its place. &ut if freedom seems li e a wea response to the Surveillance State and its 'oals, remember this< all the State power !"ve been enumeratin' is or'ani7ed to curtail freedom, stop it, end it, ma e it obsolete. (hat enormous effort wouldn"t be necessary if freedom were merely a passin' fancy. !t isn"t. !t"s an eternal force.
