Setting Up Oracle Alert

Before using Oracle Alert, the setup should be complete and some options defined to enable the Alerts perform their functions. Setup options can be defined in the Alert Options Form. Following options can be set through the Options form Mail Systems Mail Server Options Message Elements Response Processing More Options

Define a mail system for Oracle Alert


Define the mail system, which is supposed to be used for the Oracle Alerts in your system to send mails to the recipient. There are three predefined mail systems. Apart from these, user has the choice to enter other mail system, which he is going to use. Unix Sendmail VMS mail Windows NT mail In the Command field, enter the operating system command you use to invoke your mail system. Enable the Mail system, which you want to use. Only one system can be enabled.

Define Mail Accounts


Perform the following to define mail account for your alerts in the Mail Server Options tab. Enter the value for Mail Database/Server Name The accounts block has two predefined values. In the Application field, enter the name of the application for which you want to specify a mail account for Oracle Alert to use to process responses for that application. The application is set to (Default) for the two predefined default accounts. In the Username and Password fields, enter the username and password of the mail account you want Oracle Alert to use for this application. User Name is an Optional parameter Can be left blank. Password is an Optional parameter Can be left blank.

Define options for your Messages


Oracle Alert gives the users an option to define certain parameters for the messages, which are sent through mails. These parameters are not visible when the Alert Details are entered, but internally, the Oracle Alert processes the messages according to the options and the recipient of the message is able to view the messages as specified in this form. Given below is a screen shot, one has a Message Action header value. That value gets appended, just before the beginning of the message body, which is specified in the Alert details.

There are four message text options that can be customized according to the requirements. Once these options are set, these are applicable to all the Alerts. Message Action Header Message Action Footer Response Text Returned Message Header

Define Response Processing Options


Oracle Alerts require the response processing options to be specified for cases where an Alert is defined to handle responses also.

There are following six response-processing options you can modify: Enable Response Processing Check for Open Responses Before Reading Responses Response Processor Start Time Response Processor End Time Response Processor Interval Oracle Alert Installation Number This option is used to enable response processing. This option enhances performance efficiency. The default is Yes. This option is used to specify the time of day that Oracle Alert first submits the Response Processor to the concurrent manager. The format is HH24: MI This option is used to specify the time of day that Oracle Alert last submits the Response Processor to the concurrent manager. The format is HH24: MI. This option specifies the number of minutes between submissions of the Response Processor This option specifies the number of this Oracle Alert installation. The default is 1.

Note: By Default Oracle Alert submits the program at midnight of each day. Apart from these you can specify your own options also.
