Itinerary for ABTS Winter Conference

Learn, Think, Do Minneapolis, Minnesota Friday, January 17 Sunday, January 19

Friday, January 17 (Location: Weismann Art Museum; Dress code: Formal/Business Professional) 3:00 5:00pm | Check-In at the Commons Hotel o 615 Washington Ave SE, Minneapolis, MN 55414 5:00 6:00pm | Art Gallery Reception at Weisman Art Museum o Transportation from the hotel will be provided. 6:30 9:00pm | Dinner at Weisman Art Museum o Introduction to the Association of Big Ten Students Conference Mike Schmit, President of the Minnesota Student Association o Introduction to the University of Minnesota Vice Provost and Dean of Students Danita Brown-Young o Speech on inspiring civic engagement in students Andy McCracken, Tom Allison, and Matt Cordeiro o This event will offer a CASH bar for delegates of legal drinking age. 9:00 10:00pm | Optional: Ice Skating at the Depot o This event is not covered by the conference fee and will cost about $6/person. Saturday, January 18 (Location: Nicholson Hall; Dress code: Business Casual) 8:00 9:00am | Optional: Breakfast, provided by Brueggers Bagels 9:00 10:00am | Keynote Address Nicole Allen from SPARC 10:00 11:15pm | Breakout Session: A 11:20 12:00pm | Lunch provided by Noodles & Co. 12:00 1:15pm | Breakout Session: B 1:20 2:05pm | Breakout Session: C 2:10 2:45pm | ABTS Executive Board Updates 2:45 3:30pm | ABTS General Forum o Rough draft resolutions will be presented at this time. The purpose of this time is to discuss resolutions and to propose necessary changes. Voting will occur on Sunday morning. 3:30 4:30pm | Idea Sharing o This is a chance for delegations to discuss initiatives that they are working on/would like help on. 6:00 7:30pm | Optional Group Event: Dinner at Annies Parlor o Note that this meal is not covered by the conference fee. 9:00pm ?am | Optional Group Event: Social Event o Transportation will be provided Sunday, January 19 (Location: STSS 114; Dress code: Business Casual) 8:30 9:00am | Optional: Breakfast, provided by Brueggers Bagels 9:00 10:00am | Legislative Updates with Andy MacCracken o Preparation for Big Ten on the Hill 10:00 11:00am | ABTS Forum 11:00 11:15am | Group Pictures, Departure Hotel Check-out is at 12:00pm (noon) o Transportation to the airport will be provided upon request.

Breakout Sessions Every delegate will 3 breakout sessions. These breakout sessions will be categorized as Local/University, State, and National. During each breakout session, delegates will work through the Learn, Think, & Do sections detailed below. Topics Local/University: Open Educational Resources (Open Textbooks) o Student Co-Facilitator: Brittany Edwards, University of Minnesota o Professional Co-Facilitator: Nicole Allen, SPARC State: Public vs. Private funding in higher education o Student Co-Facilitator: Tyler Hubler, University of Minnesota o Professional Co-Facilitator: Tom Allison, Young Invincibles National: Higher Education Reauthorization Act (Cost of higher education) o Student Co-Facilitator: Sam Zwerling, University of Maryland o Professional Co-Facilitator: Andy McCracken, NCLC Other issues in each topic area may arise during these discussions, but its up to the facilitator to decide whether or not other issues will be discussed during these breakout sessions. There will be time during the General Forum and the Idea sharing portion of the day to discuss other issues. Learn During this portion of the breakout session delegates will be given pertinent background information about the topic they will be discussing. This information will be provided by an expert or professional in the field, as well as a student leader who is well versed in the subject matter. Think This portion of the breakout session will be focused on brainstorming ideas for how the Association of Big Ten Students can address the discussion topic. Any and all ideas are welcomed. Creative thinking and unique solutions are highly encouraged! Do This will be the final portion of each breakout session. Here the group will use its best ideas from the Think session to draft a resolution that will be presented at the ABTS forum on Sunday. Drafts will be submitted to the ABTS and Minnesota Student Association executive teams for proofreading and revision on Saturday night.

Payment Information: Conference Fees can be paid online here, or may be paid at the time of the conference by checks made payable to Minnesota Student Association. The conference fee is $50/delegate. Please note that facilitators and volunteers need not pay this conference fee. Miscellaneous Information Guidebook App: Useful information about the conference, like itineraries and directions, will be available on a mobile application called Guidebook. From the Guidebook application, tap "Download Guides" then "Redeem Code". Enter the code abts2014 and the guide will download to your device! Weather: The conference is taking place in Minnesota in January. Please dress accordingly. Boots, coats, hats, mittens, and scarves are recommended. Transportation: Members of the Minnesota Student Association will be providing transportation to/from the airport for delegations that are flying into Minneapolis. Resolutions: Please have rough drafts of resolutions you would like to present to ABTS submitted before the conference.
