The truth, and the whole truth, so help us God

With Teens, The Happiness of Lovemaking and Great White Buffalo WHEN: 8 p.m. Monday, March 12 WHERE: Synchro Studio, 512 Yale SE HOW MUCH: $5 at the door. All-ages show For a longer version of this interview, visit www. ABQjournal. com/venue fun. It just made sense and we had so much fun together. We played our first show in Longview, Washington, at a Chinese restaurant. After a couple years of playing the party circuit and touring, they recorded Shame Spiral. It features such priceless numbers as Basement, a love song to everyones favorite subterranean living space; Muffin Top, an ode to women who buy their jeans too tight and their tops too short; and UTI, a primal expression of urinary tract misery that, oddly, often gets the 15-year-old boys in the audience singing along. On Take Me to Your Dealer, the four songs show more mature songwriting the harmonies are much better even if the subject matter is still decidedly apolitical. The gem may be Cat Fancy, dedicated to the eponymous magazine.

he beauty of the Internet that ephemeral collection of half-truths, hallucinations and outright lies is that once something is published, it can take on a life of its own. Take, for instance, the rumor that TacocaT, a Seattle quartet known for its catchy party punk and raucous garage rock, once played on the same bill as Phish, the legendarily leaden jam band. OK, Bree McKenna, fess up. Truth or invention? Ive read that, and thats not true, the bassist for TacocaT said by phone. Weve played with a lot of Phish knockoff bands in various parts of the country, but not actually Phish. If you want to perpetuate that rumor, though, its kind of funny. Alas, Bree, no can do. The Fourth Estate is dedicated to truth, justice and all that other noble stuff. And besides, TacocaT is so much fun that theres no need to resort to tall tales. The band, which also includes drummer Lelah Maupin, guitarist Eric Randall and singer Emily Nokes (who joined McKenna on the phone for the interview), on Tuesday will release an EP, Take Me to Your Dealer, as its debut for Hardly Art Records, a subsidiary of Seattles beloved Sub Pop. Its the follow-up to Shame Spiral, the bands 2010 debut full of shout-along-on-the-chorus anthems. TacocaT came together in late 2007. Maupin and Randall had grown up together in tiny Longview, Wash., and Maupin met Nokes while studying at the Art Institute of Seattle. McKenna and Randall had been jamming together, Maupin had a drum kit and the rest is kismet. Said Nokes: It was really

Despite rumors, no, TacocaT has never played with Phish, as badly as we want to believe it.
So whats the biggest part of their evolution? McKenna: I think that weve learned our instruments a little better. Nokes: I think everybodys improved a lot. I know that like instead of yelling Ive kind of figured out a little bit more about singing. I think we thought it was a natural progression; thats just what it started to sound like. We were getting a little bit typecast as funny songs that are super-simple riot grrrl, but some of our newer songs we wanted to make a little more melodic, I guess. And now, perhaps the most important question: Did they name the band TacocaT just to see how many Google hits they could get on the word palindrome? Since we were such a friend band, we didnt want a really serious name, McKenna said. One day we were writing down different palindromes, like on a napkin, and TacocaT just seemed so funny it stuck.
